Chapter 8 - THE SECOND LEDGERNobody in the room moved for three seconds.

Then the federal agents exploded into motion.

“Lock down the floor!”

“Cover the stairwells!”

“Check the windows!”

“Search every office!”

Evelyn grabbed her radio.

“This is Hart. Caroline Vale is loose inside the building. She is armed, connected, and not to be underestimated.”

Vincent looked at the empty handcuffs.

Then at the broken window.

“She didn’t go out.”

Evelyn turned. “How do you know?”

“Because she wants us to think she did.”

Marco nodded toward the freight elevator.

“She went down.”

Dante, slumped against the table, laughed softly.

Everyone looked at him.

“What?” Evelyn demanded.

Dante’s face was gray with pain, but his eyes remained sharp.

“You people are still thinking like cops.”

Marco crouched in front of him.

“And you’re thinking like a man who wants to live.”

“I am.”

Vincent stepped closer.

“Then start being useful.”

Dante swallowed.

“Caroline doesn’t run unless running gives her leverage. If she left this room, it’s because she still has someone.”

Sophia grabbed Lucia’s hand.

“My grandma is here.”

Dante looked at her.

For once, there was no cruelty in his eyes.

“Not her.”

Vincent knew before Dante said it.

“Eli.”

Dante nodded.

“The crying man.”

Evelyn cursed under her breath.

“He was in federal custody downstairs.”

Marco’s expression turned cold.

“Then he isn’t anymore.”

Sophia frowned.

“Why does she need him?”

Dante looked at Mr. Buttons.

“Because the bear holds the key, but Eli built the lock.”

The room shifted again.

Sophia hugged the bear to her chest.

Evelyn crouched beside Dante.

“Explain.”

Dante winced.

“Eli Mercer used to design encrypted storage systems for Glass Saint. He tried to leave. They took his sister. Made him plant the transmitters. But years ago, Elena forced him to help her hide the ledger.”

Sophia looked at Vincent.

“My mom knew the crying man?”

Vincent shook his head slowly.

“I didn’t know.”

Evelyn’s face was tight.

“I did.”

Vincent turned to her.

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“Elena found Eli through me. He was a source. Scared, but talented. He created a dead-drop system that needed two pieces to open. A physical token and a living passphrase.”

Marco’s eyes narrowed.

“Living passphrase?”

Evelyn looked at Sophia.

The child went still.

“No,” Vincent said.

Evelyn did not look away.

“Elena didn’t trust passwords. She trusted memory.”

Sophia hugged the bear tighter.

“I don’t know any password.”

Lucia’s face had gone pale.

Vincent saw it.

“Lucia.”

The old woman closed her eyes.

“Don’t.”

“What did Elena tell her?”

Lucia’s hand shook around Sophia’s.

“She was a baby.”

“What did she tell her?”

Lucia looked at Sophia and tears gathered again.

“When Sophia was little, I sang to her.”

Sophia blinked.

“The yellow door song?”

Lucia nodded, crying now.

“You said Mom made it up.”

“She did.”

Vincent’s chest tightened.

Sophia whispered the first line without thinking.

“Behind the yellow door, the little bird sleeps…”

Every adult in the room went silent.

Marco looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked at the bear.

Dante closed his eyes.

“There it is,” he said.

Sophia stepped back.

“No. It’s just a song.”

Evelyn’s voice was gentle.

“Sweetheart, your mother may have hidden the passphrase inside that song.”

Sophia shook her head.

“No. It’s mine.”

The pain in her voice cut through everyone.

It was not anger.

It was possession.

A child who had already lost her mother was now being told even her lullaby had been part of a war.

Vincent knelt.

“Sophia.”

She backed away from him too.

“No! You all keep taking things. My bear. My song. My mom. My grandma’s lies. Now you want my memories?”

Lucia covered her mouth.

Vincent stayed still.

Because Sophia was right.

Again.

The lead federal commander stepped in.

“Agent Hart, we have a possible sighting. Service corridor, twenty-sixth floor.”

Evelyn stood. “Caroline?”

“Female, gray suit. She has a hostage.”

Vincent did not need to ask.

Eli.

Sophia wiped her face.

“We have to help him.”

Vincent looked at her.

“He put devices under my cars.”

“He was scared.”

“That doesn’t erase what he did.”

“It didn’t erase what you did either.”

The room went quiet.

Sophia seemed surprised by her own words.

Vincent absorbed them.

Then he nodded once.

“No. It didn’t.”

He stood.

“Marco, with me.”

Evelyn lifted a hand.

“You are not going after Caroline with armed federal teams in the building.”

Vincent looked at her.

“You lost her in handcuffs.”

Evelyn’s face hardened.

Marco stepped between them.

“Argue later. She’ll head for the old executive tunnel.”

Evelyn frowned. “What tunnel?”

Vincent looked at Marco.

“You know about that?”

Marco smiled faintly.

“I vanished for fifteen years, Vincent. I picked up hobbies.”

Dante groaned.

“She’ll use it if she has a keycard.”

“She has mine,” Evelyn said.

Everyone looked at her.

Evelyn’s jaw tightened.

“She took it during the fight.”

Vincent looked toward the freight elevator.

“Then she’s already below us.”

Sophia grabbed Mr. Buttons.

“I’m going.”

“No,” Vincent, Lucia, and Evelyn said together.

Sophia glared at all three.

Vincent crouched.

“This is not courage now. This is danger.”

“The song is in my head.”

“We don’t need it yet.”

“What if she gets Eli? What if he’s the only one who knows where to put the song?”

Nobody answered.

Sophia’s chin trembled.

“I’m tired of people almost dying because of me while I sit somewhere scared.”

Lucia knelt and held her face.

“You are seven.”

Sophia whispered, “I was seven in the garage too.”

That silenced them.

Vincent looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn looked furious because she knew the child had a point.

Marco sighed.

“Elena’s bloodline. Stubborn as sin.”

Vincent pointed at him. “Not helpful.”

Marco shrugged.

“True though.”

Lucia stood slowly.

“If she goes, I go.”

“No,” Vincent said.

Lucia’s eyes flashed.

“I gave up seven years to your promise. Do not tell me no today.”

The federal commander stepped in.

“This is insane.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Welcome to the case.”

They moved fast.

Two federal agents led.

Evelyn followed.

Vincent and Marco walked behind them, close enough that neither man forgot old hate, far enough that they did not trip over it.

Sophia walked between Lucia and Paulie, clutching Mr. Buttons.

Dante was left with medics and handcuffs that this time locked to a steel support beam.

As they entered the stairwell, Sophia heard Vincent speaking quietly to Marco.

“Did Elena know you were alive?”

Marco’s answer was soft.

“For a while.”

Vincent stopped walking.

Marco did not.

“She called me because she knew you’d come if she called you. And if you came, they would follow.”

Vincent’s voice roughened.

“You let me think you betrayed me.”

“I did betray you.”

Marco looked back.

“I let her die slower than I should have because I tried to save everyone.”

Vincent stared at him.

Marco’s scar twisted when he swallowed.

“And I failed.”

Sophia listened.

She did not understand all of it.

But she understood this.

Every adult around her had a grave inside them.

Some had names.

Some had secrets.

They reached the twenty-sixth floor.

The hallway lights flickered.

At the far end, a service door hung open.

Eli’s voice echoed from somewhere beyond it.

“Please! I can open it! I can open it!”

Caroline answered, calm and cold.

“You’d better.”

Vincent lifted a finger.

Everyone froze.

Sophia heard another sound.

A soft mechanical beep.

Then Eli screamed.

Vincent ran.

They burst through the service door into a narrow maintenance corridor.

At the end, Caroline held Eli by the collar beside an old keypad.

A gun pressed under his chin.

She looked past Vincent and smiled at Sophia.

“There’s my little key.”

Sophia clutched Mr. Buttons.

May you like

Caroline’s eyes gleamed.

“Ready to sing?”
