Chapter 5: The Gathering of Shadows

"Step away from her, Diane," Eleanor whispered, her finger tightening on the trigger of the revolver. "The marshals can shoot me, but I will take your daughter's mind with me before I go."

The federal marshals immediately raised their weapons, their tactical laser sights forming three bright red dots on Eleanor’s chest. "Drop the weapon, ma'am! Drop it now!" the lead marshal shouted, his voice echoing through the penthouse.

Marcus stumbled out of the library, holding his blood-stained forehead, his elegant suit ruined with soot and rain water. He looked at his mother holding the gun, then at the federal marshals, and finally at the television monitors that were still recording every movement in the room.

"Mother, stop," Marcus muttered, his voice hollow and defeated. "It's over. The server logs... she didn't just download the medical files. She sent the offshore account routing numbers to the federal forensic unit. The assets are already gone."

Eleanor didn't lower the gun. Her gaze remained fixed on my mother. "We built this city, Marcus. Your father died for that land. I will not let this white-trash ghost from Illinois strip us of our name."

"Your name is built on a graveyard, Eleanor," my mother said, her voice dropping into a deadly, calm quiet as she stood up, shielding my body with her own. "Ten years ago, you paid a mechanic to cut the brake lines on my husband’s car. He died in that cornfield. I survived. You thought you could clean up the mess by taking my daughter when she woke up with a blank mind, but a mother's blood doesn't forget."

I looked up from behind my mother's shoulder, my gaze fixing on Eleanor’s trembling hand. The silver pen Marcus had used to try and force my signature was lying on the floor just inches from my foot.

"You didn't kill Valerie Reed," I said, stepping out from behind my mother, looking Eleanor directly in the eyes. "Because Valerie Reed never existed. She was just a script you wrote. My name is Lucy Archer, and I am the sole heir to the Archer estate."

Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical sob, her focus shifting from my mother to me for a fraction of a second.

That was the only opening the marshals needed.

The lead marshal stepped forward, his tactical boot slamming into Eleanor’s wrist. The revolver discharged into the plaster ceiling with a deafening roar, showering the room in white dust, before clattering across the hardwood floor. The other two marshals lunged forward, throwing Eleanor to the floor, her expensive pearl necklace snapping and scattering across the rug like tiny white teeth.

Marcus didn't try to fight. He simply sat down on the bottom step of the grand staircase, his head in his hands, weeping silently as the federal authorities clicked the heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Marcus Reed, Eleanor Reed, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, attempted murder, kidnapping, and the illegal distribution of schedule-one narcotics," the marshal intoned, his voice clinical and cold.

As they dragged my husband and mother-in-law out toward the service elevator, Marcus looked back at me one last time, his face twisted into an expression of pathetic, helpless desperation. "Valerie... please. I kept you safe. I kept you beautiful."

I didn't answer him. I turned away, reaching out my hand to grip my mother's fingers, the silver scars on her face no longer looking like trauma, but like the beautiful, unyielding armor of a survivor.
