Chapter 4: The Corporate Strangling

The color completely drained from Grant’s face. He stumbled backward against the edge of the mahogany dining table, his hand knocking over a glass of orange juice that began to drip slowly onto the floor.

"No... no, that's impossible," Grant whispered, his eyes darting frantically between me and the legal documents in Madeline’s hands. "The corporate registry lists the owner as an offshore entity in the Cayman Islands. I checked it myself when we went public! It’s managed by a blind trust!"

"A blind trust that answers directly to me," I said, nodding to Madeline.

The attorney handed a separate packet of documents to Captain Torres. "Captain, as of 6:00 AM this morning, Mr. Carlisle’s corporate credentials have been revoked. His corporate credit cards have been frozen, and his authorization to access any asset connected to Carlisle Global or its subsidiaries has been terminated. He has no legal right to be inside this building."

Vanessa looked at Grant, her expensive composure rapidly disintegrating. "Grant? What is she saying? Tell me she’s lying! You told me you owned this entire empire! You told me you were worth hundreds of millions!"

"I... I do! I am!" Grant shouted, turning on me, his eyes wide with a desperate, animalistic panic. "Evelyn, you can't do this! We're married! Half of everything you own is mine under marital property laws!"

"Not when you sign a comprehensive, ironclad prenuptial agreement before the wedding, Grant," Madeline Vance intervened, pulling out a copy of our marriage contract from seven years ago. "An agreement that explicitly states any assets derived from the Valkyrie Trust remain the sole, un-divisible property of Evelyn Carlisle in the event of separation, divorce, or corporate malfeasance."

Madeline turned her gaze to Vanessa, her smile sharp and predatory. "And as for you, Ms. Vale, we have already filed a formal civil lawsuit against you for intentional infliction of emotional distress, child abuse, and unlawful battery. The Denver Police Department is currently opening a criminal investigation based on the forensic medical evidence we secured at 4:30 this morning."

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She looked down at her red stiletto heels, suddenly looking as if she were standing on broken glass. "Grant, do something! Call your corporate lawyers! Call the board!"

"He can't," I said, pulling out my secure government phone and tossing it onto the table. "The board of directors is currently convening an emergency meeting at the corporate headquarters downtown. They were notified of your immediate termination for gross financial misconduct and embezzlement two hours ago."

"Embezzlement?" Grant gasped. "I never embezzled a dime!"

"You used corporate funds to purchase a three-carat diamond ring for Vanessa Vale three weeks ago," I said, my voice dropping into an icy register. "You used the company's private jet to fly her to Cabo while I was hanging out of a helicopter near the Canadian border trying to keep this country safe. Every single dollar you spent on her was flagged by my financial forensic units within twenty-four hours."

I looked at the uniformed police officers behind me. "Captain Torres, please escort Mr. Carlisle and Ms. Vale off the property. They are allowed to take only the clothes they are currently wearing. Any personal items left behind will be reviewed by our legal team to ensure they weren't purchased with stolen corporate funds."

"Evelyn, please!" Grant screamed as two heavy-set officers stepped forward, grabbing him by the arms. "We can talk about this! Think about Lily! She needs her father!"

"You stopped being her father the second you let another woman put her heel on her hand," I said, turning my back on him.

Vanessa shrieked as an officer clutched her wrist, forcing her toward the front door. "Get your hands off me! Do you know who my father is? He will ruin all of you!"

"Your father’s real estate firm relies entirely on line-of-credit financing from the Denver National Bank," I called out over my shoulder as they were dragged into the foyer. "A bank where the Valkyrie Trust holds a sixty percent controlling stake. By noon today, your father will be too busy trying to keep his own company out of bankruptcy to worry about your legal problems, Vanessa."

The massive front doors slammed shut, leaving the house in an absolute, beautiful silence. I sank into one of the dining chairs, my shoulders finally dropping as the immense weight of the last twenty-four hours hit me. But the work wasn't done. The real battle was just beginning.
