Chapter 5: The High-Society Collapse

Chapter 5: The High-Society Collapse
A collective gasp rippled through the grand pavilion. The brutal reality of the photographs—the stark contrast between a bloody, terrified eight-year-old girl and the pristine, wealthy environment of the gala—was devastating. Several major donors immediately set their glasses down and began walking toward the exits.
"This is a fabrication!" Norma screamed, her voice losing its controlled, upper-class veneer and revealing a shrill, desperate panic. She slammed her hand onto the podium. "James has always been unstable! He’s a failed businessman trying to extort our family name! Melissa, don't say a word to him!"
"I don't need her to speak, Norma," Christopher stepped forward, pulling a stack of legal documents from his briefcase. He climbed the steps of the stage, tossing the papers directly onto the podium in front of her. "These are federal freezing orders. Every account tied to the Richard Children's Foundation has been locked by the internal revenue service as of nine a.m. this morning."
Norma staggered back, her hand flying to her diamond necklace. "What?"
"You thought you were clever, using a children’s charity to launder the money Melissa embezzled from James’s logistics firm," Christopher smiled, a cold, ruthless curve of his lips. "But when you transfer stolen funds across state lines from Illinois to Wisconsin, it becomes a federal wire fraud issue. The FBI financial crimes division has been tracking your foundation's primary routing numbers for the last forty-eight hours."
Melissa collapsed onto a nearby chair on the stage, her head in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently as she realized the absolute ruin of her plan. "James... please. I did it for us. My mother told me you were going to ruin the family... she told me you were going to take Sarah away from me..."
"You left her, Melissa," I said, stepping onto the stage and looking down at her. "You left our daughter bleeding in the dark because she wasn't convenient for your new life. You didn't just break our marriage; you broke a sacred trust. And now, you’re going to pay the full price for it."
Detective Vance walked up the steps, pulling two sets of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. He walked past Norma, who was frozen in shock, and stopped directly in front of Melissa.
"Melissa Sherwood," Vance said loudly, ensuring every person remaining in the pavilion could hear him. "You are under arrest for felony child abandonment, corporate grand larceny, and criminal forgery. Hands behind your back."
As the steel cuffs clicked around Melissa’s wrists, Norma let out a broken, aristocratic screech, rushing toward Vance. "You can't touch her! Do you know who my lawyers are? Do you know who sits on our board?"
"I know exactly who sits on your board, Norma," Christopher said, stepping into her path with an iron wall of presence. "And as of tomorrow morning, they will all be receiving subpoenas to testify in a federal conspiracy trial. I suggest you find yourself a very good defense team. You’re going to need it."

The grand pavilion, once a symbol of their untouchable wealth and arrogance, had become a trap. As Detective Vance led a weeping Melissa down the red carpet in chains, surrounded by the flashing cameras of the local press who had arrived for the gala, I looked out at the empty stage.
The parasites had been exposed. The foundation of their empire was completely gone.
