Chapter 4: The Boardroom Execution

The corporate headquarters of Hale Construction sat in a towering glass skyscraper in the financial district, overlooking the very harbor our company had spent forty years building.

At 9:00 a.m. sharp, the grand mahogany conference table was surrounded by the twelve members of the board of directors. These were men and women who had stood by my father for decades, but who had been systematically lied to by Vivian, convinced that Richard Hale was no longer mentally competent to lead.

The double doors burst open, and Vivian walked in.

She was dressed to kill—a sharp, immaculate white designer suit, a diamond necklace that cost more than a teacher’s annual salary, and her head held high. She didn't look like a woman whose son had been arrested twelve hours prior; she looked like an empress entering her court.

"Good morning, ladies and gentlemen," Vivian said, taking her seat at the head of the table without waiting for an invitation. "I know there have been some... unsettling rumors circulating in the press this morning regarding my son. I assure you, it is nothing more than a minor administrative misunderstanding that our legal team is currently handling. Now, let’s move to item one on the agenda: the authorization of the secondary land transfer."

"There is no item one, Vivian," I said, standing up from the far corner of the dark room.

The board members gasped, several of them leaning forward in their chairs.

"Isabella?" Arthur Pendelton, the oldest board member and my father’s former partner, stood up, his eyes wide. "When did you get back from New York?"

"I got back yesterday, Arthur," I said, walking slowly toward the head of the table. I dropped a heavy stack of certified bank transcripts directly in front of him. "I came back just in time to stop this woman from liquidating Hale Construction’s entire reserve fund to pay off her personal gambling debts in Macau."

Vivian slammed her hands onto the table, standing up so violently her chair rolled back into the glass window. "Isabella! You have no standing in this boardroom! Security, remove this girl immediately!"

Two security guards stepped into the room, but they didn't look at me. They looked at the man who stepped in directly behind me.

Richard Hale.

He was walking with a cane, his posture straight, his grey suit tailored and sharp. He didn't look like a man in the depths of cognitive decline; he looked like the founder of the empire.

"Arthur," my father said, his voice carrying that old, commanding resonance that made every person in the room instantly sit up straight. "Take a look at those bank records. Tell me if that looks like an administrative misunderstanding."

Vivian’s hand flew to her throat, her fingers clutching her diamonds as if they could save her. "Richard... you... you’re supposed to be—"

"Drugged?" my father finished her sentence, stepping up to the head of the table. "Confined to a bed while your son wears my watch and your heel rests on my chest? Not anymore, Vivian."

Arthur Pendelton looked up from the documents, his face pale with fury. "Vivian... you transferred three point two million dollars out of the federal harbor fund into a private account yesterday afternoon. The state has already frozen the project. We’re facing federal debarment because of you!"

"She isn't facing debarment, Arthur," I said, leaning over the table and looking directly into Vivian’s trembling eyes. "Because as of five minutes ago, the board of directors has a new majority voting block. I have personally acquired the fourteen percent share held by the minority investors. Combined with my father’s original trust shares, we hold sixty-two percent of Hale Construction."

I pulled a single, crisp sheet of paper from my pocket—the final signature my father had executed in the quiet of his study this morning.

"Vivian Evans," I said, my voice echoing with absolute authority. "You are hereby terminated from your position as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately. Your corporate credit lines are canceled. Your access to the building is revoked. And your personal assets have been placed under a judicial lien to recover the stolen funds."

Vivian looked around the table, looking for a single face, a single ally among the people she had spent years trying to manipulate. Every single board member turned their head away from her.

"You... you think you've broken me?" Vivian hissed, her voice cracking as she snatched her designer handbag from the table. "I still have the mansion, Richard. The deed is in my name. You'll be sleeping in a motel tonight!"

"Check the mail, Vivian," I smiled coldly. "The state bank just issued an emergency foreclosure notice on the estate. It turns out that when you pay for a house using embezzled corporate funds, the property becomes an instrument of a crime. The state is seizing it at noon."
