Chapter 6: The Trial of Ruth Bell

Tuesday arrived with a clear, biting sky. Silas Vance did not wait for the circuit judge to unpack his bags at the hotel. Accompanied by Marshal Higgins and three hired men from the land-office, Vance marched straight into the town hall where the circuit court was being held.

"I have the foreclosure writ for the Walsh property, Your Honor," Vance announced to the gray-haired judge at the bench. "The rancher is incapacitated, his cattle are lost, and he’s harbored a woman of ill repute. The property is abandoned in all but name."

"The property is very much occupied, Your Honor," a voice boomed from the back of the courtroom.

Caleb Walsh stood in the doorway, leaning heavily on a crutch Ruth had carved for him, his children standing on either side of his good leg. Behind them walked Ruth Bell, carrying the tin box under her arm like a shield.

The courtroom erupted into whispers. Martha Higgins stood up from the front row, pointing at Ruth. "That woman has no right to speak in a house of law!"

"Quiet!" Judge Langdon barked, slamming his gavel. "Mr. Walsh, you are three months behind on your principal payments. What is your defense?"

Ruth did not wait for Caleb to limp forward. She stepped past the bar, opening the tin box directly onto the judge’s desk. "The defense, Your Honor, is that Mr. Vance has already been paid three hundred dollars over the actual principal of the loan."

She laid out the receipts from Caleb’s late wife, paired with the original twelve-year-old mineral deed. "Silas Vance altered the ledger entries in his office, charged illegal compounding interest on a paid cash balance, and systematically cut the fences of a resident rancher to force an illegal land seizure for mineral exploration."

Vance lunged toward the desk, his hand reaching for the papers. "She’s a liar! A thief who stole her husband's livelihood!"

"The only thief here is the man who forgot that cash leaves a paper trail," Ruth said, her voice cutting through his panic. "The bank records from the county seat show you deposited Caleb’s cash payments into your personal account the exact day his wife signed the ledger."

Judge Langdon adjusted his spectacles, his eyes turning cold as he scanned the documents. He looked up at Vance, then at the marshal. "Marshal Higgins, remove Mr. Vance's men from this room. And then place Silas Vance under arrest for grand fraud and deed tampering."
