Chapter 13 - The Fall of Crowe

Jun-ho’s arrest broke open the city.

Not because anyone cared about another crime boss being dragged through a back alley.

Because his files connected to Crowe.

Jun-ho had supplied private security for Victor Hale before Min-jae bought the Velvet Ember. He had protected the hidden room system. When Min-jae took over and tightened rules, Victor had gone to Nathaniel directly, desperate to keep the arrangement alive.

Arthur Crowe had known enough to pay.

Not enough to leave fingerprints.

At first.

Then Marisol testified.

Behind closed doors, with her name sealed, her voice steady.

Then another woman.

Then five.

Then nine.

Jasmine did not testify first.

That had been Simone’s strategy.

“Let them see this was a system before they see your face,” she said.

When Jasmine finally walked into the federal courthouse, cameras lined the street.

Denise held one hand.

Camille held the other.

Min-jae stood across the avenue behind the barricade, not near enough to claim her, not far enough to pretend he did not care.

Jasmine saw him.

He bowed his head once.

She walked inside.

Nathaniel’s attorneys tried to make her sound reckless.

“You accepted a drink at a nightclub, correct?”

“From staff, not from Mr. Crowe.”

“You had consumed alcohol earlier?”

“One glass of wine over dinner.”

“You confronted my client before the alleged incident?”

“I returned an unwanted bottle after he ignored my refusal.”

“You were emotional?”

“I was clear.”

The attorney smiled. “Ms. Brooks, are you currently involved with Min-jae Lee?”

The courtroom shifted.

Jasmine looked at the judge, then back at the attorney.

“No.”

“Were you involved with him then?”

“No.”

“But you saved his life.”

“Yes.”

“And he later purchased a club you frequented.”

“Yes.”

“Would you call that normal?”

“No.”

A ripple went through the room.

The attorney blinked.

Jasmine leaned slightly toward the microphone.

“What happened between Mr. Lee and me was not normal. It was complicated, frightening, and in some ways wrong. But none of that put a substance in my champagne. None of that made Nathaniel Crowe grab my arm. None of that made his father offer money for silence.”

The courtroom went quiet.

“So if your strategy is to make me defend Min-jae Lee instead of describing what your client did,” Jasmine said, “you should know I came prepared to do both.”

The prosecutor hid a smile.

The attorney sat down.

Three weeks later, Nathaniel Crowe accepted a plea after more charges were added from other survivors’ testimony.

Arthur Crowe was indicted for obstruction, witness intimidation, and financial crimes connected to settlements disguised as consulting payments.

Victor Hale cooperated and still went to prison.

Jun-ho faced federal charges that reached far beyond one kidnapping.

The headlines were loud.

The consequences imperfect.

But real.

On the day Arthur Crowe was led from court, he saw Jasmine standing near the steps.

“You think this makes you powerful?” he asked.

Jasmine looked at him calmly.

“No,” she said. “It makes you accountable. That’s why it feels unfamiliar.”

That clip became the one people remembered.

Not the drugged drink.

Not the mafia boss.

May you like

Not the burning club.

A woman in a navy coat telling an old empire what it had never been forced to hear.
