Chapter 4 – The Shadow Outside Apartment 2B

Rain began falling just after midnight.

Thin.

Cold.

Steady enough to wash the streets clean while hiding the sound of footsteps.

Rachel Bennett couldn't sleep.

She sat beside the small living-room window, watching water slide down the glass.

Something felt wrong.

Not fear.

Instinct.

The kind that whispered before life changed forever.

Behind the bedroom door, Noah slept peacefully for the first time in weeks, the soft rhythm of his breathing almost drowned out by the rain.

Rachel smiled.

Then her phone rang.

An unknown number.

She hesitated before answering.

"...Hello?"

A man's voice.

Calm.

Low.

"Ms. Bennett?"

"Yes?"

"My name isn't important."

Every muscle in her body tightened.

"I only have one question."

"...Who is Alexander Moretti?"

Rachel frowned.

"I don't know anyone by that name."

Silence.

Then the caller chuckled.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

The line went dead.

Rachel stared at the phone.

How did strangers know her name?

Who was Alexander Moretti?

And why did everyone suddenly believe she knew him?

Across Manhattan...

Alexander Moretti stood inside his private security center.

Six enormous monitors covered one wall.

One displayed Rachel's apartment building.

Another showed the surrounding streets.

His security chief, Daniel Ross, looked concerned.

"We traced the call."

Alexander folded his arms.

"Well?"

"Disposable phone."

"No surprise."

Daniel zoomed in on security footage from two blocks away.

A black SUV sat motionless beneath a broken streetlamp.

No license plates.

Tinted windows.

Engine running.

"It arrived forty-three minutes before the phone call."

Alexander's eyes narrowed.

"Occupants?"

"Three."

"We lost visual after that."

Alexander remained silent.

Daniel knew that expression.

Someone had crossed another line.

"I want people outside her building."

"They're already there."

"Visible?"

"No."

"Good."

The following morning...

Rachel left for work carrying an umbrella in one hand and Noah's backpack in the other.

She locked the apartment door.

Turned.

Stopped.

A black umbrella appeared above her head.

"You'll get soaked."

She looked up.

The man standing beside her wore a charcoal overcoat.

Early forties.

Calm blue eyes.

Neatly trimmed beard.

There was something strangely familiar about his face, though she knew they had never met.

"You are?"

He smiled politely.

"Alexander."

Rachel blinked.

"Alexander..."

"Moretti."

Silence.

Her heart skipped.

The name.

The mysterious name everyone kept mentioning.

"I don't understand."

"I know."

He looked toward Noah.

"You must be Noah."

The boy smiled shyly.

"Hi."

Alexander crouched until they were eye level.

"I hear you're feeling better."

Noah nodded enthusiastically.

"My inhaler works now."

"I'm glad."

Rachel stepped slightly in front of her son.

"What do you want?"

Alexander stood.

"To introduce myself."

"And?"

"And to apologize."

She frowned.

"For what?"

"For entering your life without permission."

Rain drummed softly against the umbrella.

Rachel studied him carefully.

"Were you the one who..."

"The medicine?"

"Yes."

"The groceries?"

"Yes."

"My phone?"

Alexander hesitated.

"...Yes."

She stared at him.

"Why?"

He looked away briefly.

"When I was ten years old..."

His voice softened.

"...my little brother died because my family couldn't afford the medicine he needed."

Rachel's expression changed.

"He was seven."

"I promised myself that if I ever had the ability..."

He looked back at Noah.

"...no child near me would lose that fight because of money."

Neither spoke.

Even the city seemed quieter.

Finally Rachel whispered,

"You should've told me."

"I was afraid you wouldn't accept help."

She sighed.

"You were right."

For the first time...

Alexander laughed.

A genuine laugh.

"So we're making progress."

Noah tugged on Rachel's sleeve.

"Mom?"

"What?"

"I think he's nice."

Alexander smiled.

"I've been called many things."

"Nice isn't usually one of them."

Three blocks away...

A camera lens focused directly on them.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Inside the parked SUV, a man lowered expensive binoculars.

"So..."

he muttered.

"There really is a connection."

He picked up another phone.

"I've confirmed it."

A woman's voice answered.

"Good."

"What now?"

The answer came immediately.

"Take the boy."

The man froze.

"The child?"

"Alexander Moretti protects the mother."

A pause.

"He'll do anything..."

"...for the son."

The call disconnected.

That afternoon...

Alexander's security team noticed the van.

White.

Unmarked.

Parked outside Noah's elementary school.

It had remained there for nearly two hours.

Daniel Ross immediately called Alexander.

"We've got movement."

Alexander was already standing.

"Details."

"Unknown white cargo van."

"Watching the playground."

Alexander grabbed his jacket.

"I'm on my way."

School dismissal arrived.

Children poured through the front gates laughing.

Parents waved.

Teachers smiled.

Noah exited holding his dinosaur backpack.

He searched for Rachel.

She was running late.

Traffic.

A delivery truck blocked her street.

Noah waited exactly where she'd taught him.

Don't move.

Don't talk to strangers.

Stay near the office.

The white van rolled slowly toward the curb.

The side door slid open.

A man smiled.

"Hey, buddy."

Noah stepped backward.

"Your mom asked me to pick you up."

"No."

"I know Alexander."

Noah's eyes widened.

The man smiled wider.

"See?"

Before he could move another step—

A black SUV screeched across the school entrance.

Brakes screamed.

Doors flew open.

Alexander Moretti stepped out before the vehicle had completely stopped.

His voice echoed across the sidewalk.

"NOAH!"

Every head turned.

The kidnapper looked up.

Their eyes met.

For one frozen second...

Neither man moved.

Then the stranger reached inside his jacket.

Alexander did the same.

Children screamed.

Teachers shouted.

Parents grabbed their kids.

And the quiet afternoon exploded into chaos.
