Chapter 3: The Hidden Room Behind the Portrait

The mansion had never felt so quiet.

Not because people had stopped talking.

Because everyone had started listening.

After Nathan walked Meredith out of the library without another word, every employee in the Caldwell estate sensed something had shifted. Housekeepers exchanged nervous glances while folding towels. The chef burned a tray of croissants because he kept looking toward the front staircase. Even the gardeners outside noticed that Mr. Caldwell's black SUV remained parked in the driveway long after he usually left for his office.

Emma spent the afternoon trying to convince herself that life would return to normal.

It had to.

People like Nathan Caldwell belonged to a different world. Wealthy men became angry. Wealthy men cooled down. Wealthy men married women from wealthy families because that was how their world worked.

She was only the maid.

By tomorrow, Meredith would probably apologize just enough to satisfy appearances, Nathan would accept it, and Emma would quietly begin searching for another job before things became unbearable.

She had lived through enough disappointments not to expect miracles.

Meanwhile, Lily sat on the floor of Emma's small room in the staff wing, coloring with the new box of crayons Nathan had personally brought her after lunch.

The rescued drawing rested carefully on the desk.

Nathan had placed it inside a simple wooden frame.

Not because it matched the mansion.

Because he had told Lily every important picture deserved protection.

The little girl smiled every few minutes whenever she looked at it.

Children healed faster than adults.

Or maybe they simply believed the world wanted to be kind.

Emma wished she still possessed that gift.

Across the mansion, Nathan sat alone in his private office.

The painting leaned against the bookshelf beside him.

He had stared at it for almost an hour.

Not because of the crooked house.

Not because of the oversized sun.

Because of the tiny figures standing beside him.

One was clearly Lily.

One was Emma.

The third figure puzzled him.

A woman with long blonde hair.

Standing behind a tree.

Watching.

He frowned.

"Lily," he had asked earlier, "who is she?"

The little girl had answered so naturally.

"The mean lady."

"You mean Meredith?"

Lily had nodded.

"She watches Mommy."

At the time he thought nothing of it.

Children imagined things.

Didn't they?

Yet the words refused to leave his mind.

She watches Mommy.

Not yells.

Not scares.

Watches.

Nathan opened the employee files stored in the estate management system.

Emma Brooks.

Employment: Twenty-two months.

Performance: Excellent.

Complaints: None.

Disciplinary reports: None.

Then another file caught his attention.

Staff Incident Reports.

There were seven.

Seven reports involving Emma.

Nathan frowned.

He had never seen them.

Every report had already been marked "Resolved."

Approved by...

Meredith Sterling.

His heartbeat slowed.

Why had Meredith been approving personnel complaints?

She had no authority over household staff.

He clicked the first report.

Complaint:

Housemaid Emma Brooks left fingerprints on guest silverware. Formal warning issued.

Nathan stared.

Ridiculous.

The second.

Housemaid entered east hallway without authorization.

The third.

Child found playing near formal garden despite verbal instructions.

Every report ended the same way.

Warning.

Written reprimand.

Employee acknowledged.

Except...

There were no signatures.

No witness statements.

Nothing.

Only Meredith's approval.

Nathan leaned back.

Someone had been building a case.

Against Emma.

At the same time, Meredith sat inside her luxury penthouse downtown.

She had already called her mother twice.

Then her wedding planner.

Then her publicist.

Everyone told her the same thing.

"Give Nathan space."

She hated that advice.

Space meant time.

Time meant questions.

Questions were dangerous.

She poured another glass of white wine.

Her phone buzzed.

RAFE STERLING.

Her older brother.

"What happened?"

Nathan never throws people out."

"He embarrassed me."

"No."

"He embarrassed himself."

She gritted her teeth.

"Stay out of this."

"I can't."

"You know the Brooks woman?"

Meredith hesitated.

"No."

"Liar."

Silence.

Rafe sighed.

"Father warned you."

"I handled it."

"No."

"You made it worse."

Meredith looked toward the city skyline.

"He can't marry me if he starts protecting servants."

Rafe laughed.

"You still don't understand, do you?"

"What?"

"He isn't protecting the maid."

"Then what?"

"He's looking for whoever lied to him."

For the first time that day...

Meredith felt afraid.

The next morning began with rain.

Gray clouds wrapped around Greenwich like heavy curtains.

Emma carried fresh towels toward the east wing when Nathan stepped into the hallway.

"Good morning."

She smiled politely.

"Good morning, sir."

"Walk with me."

Her stomach tightened.

Had he decided to dismiss her after all?

Instead, Nathan led her into the conservatory overlooking the gardens.

Rain tapped gently against the glass ceiling.

He waited until they were alone.

"Emma."

"Yes?"

"I need you to answer honestly."

She nodded.

"Has Meredith ever threatened you?"

Emma looked away.

"No."

Nathan noticed the hesitation immediately.

"Threatened your job?"

Silence.

"Threatened Lily?"

Emma closed her eyes.

Still silent.

Nathan spoke quietly.

"You're protecting someone."

"No..."

"Who?"

Emma whispered,

"My daughter."

He waited.

Finally she took a shaking breath.

"The first week after I started working here..."

Flashback.

Lily had been barely one year old.

Still learning to walk.

Emma had been polishing mirrors upstairs when Meredith unexpectedly visited the mansion.

She wasn't engaged then.

Only Nathan's girlfriend.

Meredith wandered through the staff hallway wearing expensive heels.

She found Lily sitting on the floor playing with wooden blocks.

"What is this?"

Emma hurried over.

"My daughter."

Meredith frowned.

"I didn't know employees brought children."

"I have permission."

Meredith looked disgusted.

"Children don't belong in luxury homes."

Emma apologized repeatedly.

Then Meredith crouched beside Lily.

She smiled.

Too sweetly.

"Pretty baby."

Lily reached toward Meredith's bracelet.

Meredith instantly pulled away.

Then she stood.

"If Nathan ever starts treating staff like family..."

She smiled again.

"...someone will lose their job."

Emma never forgot those words.

Back in the conservatory...

Emma wiped away tears.

"I tried staying invisible."

"I kept Lily away from guests."

"I never complained."

"I thought eventually she'd forget about us."

Nathan remained perfectly still.

"But she didn't."

Emma nodded.

"Every month there was something."

"The flowers weren't arranged correctly."

"The towels weren't folded right."

"My room inspections."

"My schedule."

"My daughter."

Nathan finally understood.

The incident yesterday...

Hadn't begun yesterday.

It had lasted nearly two years.

That afternoon Nathan asked Richard, his longtime chief of security, to meet him privately.

"I need every security recording."

"What dates?"

"All of them."

Richard blinked.

"Sir..."

"The last twenty-four months."

"That's thousands of hours."

"I know."

"What exactly are we looking for?"

Nathan placed Meredith's fake disciplinary reports onto the desk.

"The truth."

Richard looked stunned.

"I'll start immediately."

"And Richard..."

"Yes?"

"Don't tell anyone."

Especially Meredith.

Three hours later...

Richard returned sooner than expected.

His face had changed.

"I found something."

Nathan stood.

"What?"

"It wasn't easy."

"Older footage automatically archives."

"But one clip survived."

He connected a laptop to the office television.

A grainy security recording appeared.

Date:

Fourteen months earlier.

Main staircase.

Emma carrying folded laundry.

Lily walking beside her holding a stuffed rabbit.

Meredith appeared at the top of the stairs.

She deliberately stepped into Emma's path.

Emma stopped immediately.

Apologized.

Moved aside.

Then...

Meredith looked directly toward the security camera.

Smiled.

And quietly extended one foot.

Emma tripped.

Laundry exploded everywhere.

Lily began crying.

Meredith calmly walked away.

Nathan stared at the frozen screen.

Richard swallowed.

"Should I continue?"

Nathan nodded slowly.

Another clip.

Kitchen hallway.

Meredith "accidentally" knocked a tray from Emma's hands.

Another.

Formal dining room.

Meredith blamed Emma for breaking a crystal vase.

Except...

The video clearly showed Meredith breaking it herself.

Then looking toward Emma.

Then calling security.

Nathan felt physically sick.

This wasn't arrogance.

This wasn't jealousy.

This was calculated.

Repeated.

Documented.

His fiancée hadn't simply disliked Emma.

She had been hunting her.

Nathan whispered,

"How many videos?"

Richard answered quietly.

"I've found nineteen."

"So far."

Nathan closed his eyes.

"Nineteen..."

"And sir..."

Richard hesitated.

"The worst one isn't about Emma."

Nathan looked up.

"It's about Lily."

The room suddenly felt colder.

"What happened?"

Richard didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He opened another video.

Nathan watched.

May you like

And his entire world changed.

End of Chapter 3.
