Chapter 9 — The Second Child

The mansion fell into absolute silence.

Vanessa’s words hung in the air like poison.

“Tell him about the baby.”

Nathan slowly turned toward Elena.

Rose felt every muscle in her body lock.

Elena had gone pale.

Not frightened.

Destroyed.

As if the worst wound in her life had just been ripped open in front of strangers.

Nathan stared at her.

His voice barely existed.

“…What baby?”

Elena didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

Her lips parted, but no sound came.

Vanessa crossed her arms, regaining that cruel elegance she wore whenever pain became leverage.

“There it is,” she said softly. “The truth she never told you.”

Nathan’s voice sharpened.

“Vanessa.”

A warning.

She ignored it.

“You spent years blaming your father.”
A beat.

“But maybe you should ask what happened after Elena disappeared.”

Nathan looked back at Elena.

His breathing turned shallow.

“Elena.”

His voice broke.

“Talk to me.”

Tears finally spilled down Elena’s face again.

She shook her head once.

“No…”

Nathan stepped toward her.

Gentle.

Desperate.

“What baby?”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her shoulders trembled.

Then she whispered—

“Our daughter.”

Silence exploded.

Rose forgot to breathe.

No.

No…

Nathan stared.

Blank.

Uncomprehending.

“…Daughter?”

Elena nodded.

Sobbing now.

“Yes.”

Nathan staggered backward.

The hallway blurred.

Everything narrowed to one impossible truth.

He had not lost one child.

He had lost two.

His voice cracked apart.

“We had a daughter?”

Elena cried harder.

“Yes.”

Nathan covered his mouth.

His knees nearly buckled.

Harold closed his eyes.

Even he looked shaken.

Nathan whispered—

“Where is she?”

Silence.

No answer.

Nathan’s voice rose.

“Elena.”

Still silence.

Nathan shouted—

“WHERE IS SHE?”

Elena screamed back—

“SHE DIED!”

The sound shattered everyone.

Rose flinched.

Lily buried her face in Rose’s shoulder.

Nathan froze.

No movement.

No breath.

Nothing.

Elena collapsed to the floor.

“She died…”

Her body shook violently.

“I tried to protect her.”

Nathan whispered—

“No…”

Elena cried into trembling hands.

“She came early.”

A sob.

“Seven months.”

Another.

“She was tiny…”

Her voice shattered.

“So tiny.”

Rose openly cried.

Elena continued through sobs.

“When your father locked me upstairs… I was already weak.”

Harold’s face drained.

Elena pointed at him.

“He delayed medical care.”

Silence.

“He said no doctor could know I was there.”

Nathan’s face changed.

Not rage.

Something worse.

Soul-deep horror.

Elena whispered—

“I went into labor alone.”

Rose covered her mouth.

No.

No woman should endure that.

Elena’s breathing became ragged as memory consumed her.

“No nurse.”

A sob.

“No hospital.”

Another.

“Just pain.”

She clutched her chest.

“I screamed for help.”

Nathan’s eyes filled with tears.

“Elena…”

She shook violently.

“I held her.”

A pause.

“She lived.”

Silence.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Elena’s voice dropped to a whisper.

“She cried.”

One broken laugh escaped.

“She had your nose.”

Nathan collapsed into a nearby chair.

Destroyed.

Elena’s lips trembled.

“She wrapped her tiny fingers around mine.”

Silence.

Rose couldn’t stop crying.

Elena whispered—

“For eighteen minutes…”

A beat.

“…I was her mother.”

Silence crushed the room.

Then—

“She stopped breathing.”

Nathan broke.

A raw sob tore from him.

Not controlled.

Not restrained.

Animal grief.

Elena cried with him.

“She died in my arms.”

Silence.

No words existed.

No comfort.

Only grief.

Then—

Vanessa spoke.

Cold.

Sharp.

Cruel.

“Except that’s not the whole story.”

Everyone turned.

Rose stared in horror.

What now?

Nathan looked murderous.

Vanessa continued.

“The baby didn’t die.”

Silence detonated.

No.

No.

Impossible.

Elena stopped crying.

Her entire body froze.

Slowly—

she turned.

“What?”

Vanessa’s expression remained unreadable.

Nathan whispered—

“…What did you say?”

Vanessa spoke calmly.

“She didn’t die.”

Elena stared.

Blank.

Broken.

“No.”

Vanessa continued.

“She was alive when taken.”

Elena shook her head violently.

“No.”

Nathan advanced.

Slowly.

Terrifyingly.

“What are you saying?”

Vanessa held his gaze.

“I’m saying your daughter survived.”

Silence exploded into chaos.

Elena screamed—

“NO!”

She stumbled forward.

“You’re lying!”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“Am I?”

Elena lunged.

Rose gasped.

Security caught her.

She screamed.

Wild.

Primal.

“DON’T YOU DARE!”

Nathan grabbed Vanessa’s arm.

Hard.

Too hard.

“Talk.”

Vanessa winced.

Still composed.

“You want truth?”

Nathan’s voice dropped.

“Yes.”

Vanessa inhaled.

Then looked—

not at Nathan.

At Harold.

Everyone followed.

Harold stood frozen.

Utterly still.

Vanessa spoke.

“He ordered the baby removed.”

Silence.

Nathan slowly turned.

Harold said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“She had respiratory distress.”

A beat.

“She needed intensive care.”

Another.

“He arranged private transport.”

Elena stopped struggling.

Hope and horror collided in her face.

Nathan whispered—

“She lived…”

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena collapsed again.

Sobbing.

No longer grief.

Shock.

Harold finally spoke.

Low.

Gravelly.

“She wouldn’t have survived publicly.”

Nathan’s voice became ice.

“So you stole her too.”

Harold didn’t answer.

Nathan’s breathing turned dangerous.

“Where is she?”

Harold remained silent.

Nathan stepped closer.

“Where is my daughter?”

Silence.

Vanessa smiled faintly.

Then said—

“I know.”

Everyone froze.

Nathan’s head snapped toward her.

Vanessa continued.

“She’s alive.”

A beat.

“She’s seventeen.”

Rose felt the room tilt.

Seventeen?

Nathan whispered—

“No…”

Vanessa nodded.

“She’s in Boston.”

Elena’s body shook uncontrollably.

Nathan stared.

Seventeen.

A daughter.

Alive.

Growing somewhere without them.

Vanessa delivered the final blow.

“You’ve already met her.”

Silence.

Nathan stopped breathing.

Rose’s heart slammed.

What?

No.

Nathan whispered—

“…Who?”

Vanessa smiled.

Slow.

Cruel.

Victorious.

Then looked toward the front doors.

At that exact moment—

the doors opened.

A teenage girl stepped inside.

Seventeen.

Dark hair.

Sharp eyes.

School blazer.

Frozen expression.

Rose gasped.

Because the resemblance was unmistakable.

Nathan’s face.

Elena’s eyes.

Their daughter.

Alive.

Real.

Standing twenty feet away.

The girl looked around.

Confused.

Guarded.

Then her gaze landed on Nathan.

She frowned.

“…Why is everyone staring?”

Nathan couldn’t move.

Couldn’t breathe.

Couldn’t speak.

The girl looked at Vanessa.

Annoyed.

“Aunt Vanessa, what is this?”

Aunt.

Rose’s blood ran cold.

Vanessa had raised her.

Of course.

Of course she had.

Nathan whispered—

“…Mia.”

The girl froze.

Elena gasped.

“Mia…”

The girl stared.

Eyes narrowing.

“How do you know my name?”

Nathan took one trembling step forward.

Then another.

Tears blurred his vision.

Seventeen years.

Seventeen stolen years.

His daughter stood before him—

and had no idea who he was.

His voice shattered.

“Because…”

A sob caught in his throat.

“…I’m your father.”

Silence.

Absolute.

Mia stared.

Then laughed.

Short.

Disbelieving.

“What?”

Vanessa didn’t speak.

Harold didn’t move.

No one saved the lie.

Mia’s face changed.

The silence told her everything.

She slowly turned toward Vanessa.

No smile now.

No confusion.

Only dread.

“…What did he mean?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Mia’s voice sharpened.

“What did he mean?”

Still silence.

Mia stepped backward.

Heart racing.

“No.”

She looked at Elena.

Then Nathan.

Then Harold.

Her voice trembled.

“No.”

A beat.

“No, you said my parents died.”

Silence.

Tears filled her eyes.

She whispered—

“You lied too?”

And in that devastating moment—

Rose realized the cruel symmetry.

Harold stole Noah.

Vanessa stole Mia.

Two children.

Two lives.

May you like

Two lies.

And now both truths had come home at once.
