CHAPTER 1 (PART 2)

The ballroom fell into absolute silence.
Nathan Blackwell stared at the faded photograph in his mother's trembling hands as if it belonged to another lifetime.
His father, Charles Blackwell, smiled warmly into the camera, much younger than Nathan had ever known him. Standing beside him was a woman in a simple cream dress, her dark hair blowing gently in the wind. She cradled a newborn wrapped in a pale blue blanket, looking down at the baby with unmistakable love.
On the back, six words were written in Charles's unmistakable handwriting.
Your first son deserved the truth.
Nathan's breathing slowed.
Then stopped.
"My father..." he whispered.
"...had another child?"
Around him, whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire.
"Did you hear that?"
"First son?"
"I thought Nathan was an only child."
"Was Charles Blackwell hiding another family?"
Across the room, reporters invited for the birthday celebration quietly reached for their phones, only to be stopped by Blackwell security.
"No recordings," the head of security ordered.
"No photographs."
But the damage had already begun.
Nathan slowly lifted his eyes toward Vanessa.
She was no longer pretending to smile.
Her face had gone completely white.
"Nathan," she said softly, "there has to be some mistake."
He looked at her.
"You knew."
It wasn't a question.
Vanessa shook her head too quickly.
"No."
"I've never seen that picture before."
Mrs. Blackwell looked at her sharply.
"Then why were you trying to destroy it?"
Vanessa hesitated.
For just one second.
One second too long.
"I... I only thought someone was trying to ruin Nathan's birthday."
Emma, still kneeling beside Ben, watched everything without saying a word.
Her instincts told her one thing.
Vanessa wasn't frightened because of the photograph.
She was frightened because of what might come next.
Mrs. Blackwell carefully searched inside the envelope again.
"There’s something else."
She slowly unfolded a single sheet of aged paper.
The ink had faded slightly, but every word remained readable.
"My dear son,
If this letter ever reaches you, it means I failed to tell you the truth while I was alive."
Nathan's hands trembled.
His father's handwriting.
There was no doubt.
"I made mistakes that cannot be undone.
One mistake has haunted me every day.
Years before you were born, I fathered another child.
His mother never asked me for money.
She never demanded my name.
She only asked that I love him.
I was too weak to stand against my family's expectations.
If you are reading this, I ask only one thing.
Find your brother.
He deserves to know he was never abandoned in my heart."
Nathan felt the room spinning around him.
His father...
The man he had admired his entire life...
Had lived with this secret until his death.
Mrs. Blackwell covered her mouth.
Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.
"I never knew," she whispered.
"I swear to you, Nathan..."
"I never knew."
Nathan believed her.
He could see it in her eyes.
But someone else had known.
He slowly turned toward Vanessa again.
"Tell me the truth."
She forced a weak laugh.
"You're upset."
"We should discuss this privately."
"No."
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
"We discuss it now."
Vanessa swallowed.
"There isn't anything to discuss."
Nathan took one slow step closer.
"Why were you trying to take that envelope from a four-year-old child?"
No answer.
"Vanessa."
Nothing.
The silence itself became an answer.
Mrs. Blackwell suddenly frowned.
"Where did this music box come from?"
Everyone looked at Ben.
The little boy pointed innocently toward Mrs. Blackwell.
"You gave it to me."
"I know that."
"But who gave it to me?"
Mrs. Blackwell searched her memory.
Then her expression changed.
"Oh..."
"The attic."
Nathan looked confused.
"The attic?"
She nodded.
"I asked Martin to bring down an old box this afternoon."
"The music box was inside."
"I thought it would make Ben happy."
Emma frowned.
"The attic?"
Mrs. Blackwell looked worried now.
"It belonged to your father's study."
Nathan's heartbeat quickened.
"My father's private storage?"
"Yes."
"It hadn't been opened in years."
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
"Old boxes collect junk."
"None of this proves anything."
Nathan stared at her.
"Then why do you seem terrified?"
"I am not terrified."
Her voice cracked.
Emma noticed it.
Mrs. Blackwell noticed it.
Even Ben noticed it.
The little boy quietly tugged at his mother's sleeve.
"Mommy..."
Emma bent closer.
"What is it?"
Ben pointed toward Vanessa's silver handbag resting beside a chair.
"That's the lady."
Emma frowned.
"What lady?"
"The lady from upstairs."
Her stomach tightened.
"What happened upstairs?"
Ben lowered his voice as if sharing a secret.
"Yesterday."
"I was looking for my bunny."
"I saw her."
Emma felt cold.
"What did you see?"
Ben answered with complete innocence.
"She opened a little door."
"Then she hid papers inside the wall."
Emma froze.
A hidden compartment?
Mrs. Blackwell overheard.
"What papers?"
Ben shrugged.
"I don't know."
"They were yellow."
"And she said..."
He tried to remember.
"...'No one can ever find these.'"
The ballroom exploded with whispers once again.
Vanessa laughed nervously.
"Children imagine things."
Ben frowned.
"I don't lie."
Nathan slowly looked toward Emma.
"Has he ever lied before?"
Emma answered honestly.
"No."
"He sometimes misunderstands things."
"But he doesn't invent stories."
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"This is ridiculous."
"We're letting a child ruin tonight."
Nathan spoke quietly.
"No."
"If he's telling the truth..."
"...someone has been hiding something in my father's house."
The head of security stepped forward.
"Mr. Blackwell."
Nathan never looked away from Vanessa.
"Search the entire mansion."
"Especially the upstairs library."
Vanessa's face lost every trace of color.
"You can't do that."
Nathan finally smiled.
A cold smile.
"I own this house."
"And if someone has hidden something inside it..."
"...we're going to find it."
Two guards headed toward the staircase.
Vanessa suddenly moved.
"I'll help."
"No."
Nathan's voice stopped her.
"You stay here."
For the first time since anyone had known her...
Vanessa looked afraid.
Not embarrassed.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Emma looked down at Ben and hugged him tightly.
"You did nothing wrong."
Ben whispered,
"Is the pretty lady in trouble?"
Emma kissed his forehead.
"I don't know, sweetheart."
"But sometimes..."
"...the truth takes a very long time to find its way home."
Across the ballroom, Nathan still held the faded photograph.
His eyes lingered on the face of the unknown woman holding the baby.
Somewhere...
He had a brother.
A brother who had lived his entire life believing the Blackwell family had forgotten him.
Nathan closed his eyes.
His birthday had begun with champagne, music, and celebration.
It was ending with secrets buried for nearly forty years.
And somehow...
A little boy's birthday gift had opened a door that someone had spent decades trying to keep closed.
Then, just as security reached the second-floor library...
A terrified shout echoed through the mansion.
"Mr. Blackwell!"
"We found something!"
Nathan looked up.
"What is it?"
The guard's voice shook.
"I think..."
"...you need to see this yourself."
May you like
