Chapter 9 - The Letter Isabella Never Meant Him to ReadUnion Station after midnight felt like a cathedral built for ghosts.

Vincent refused Dominic’s instructions to come alone.

Marco entered through a service corridor.

Federal agents covered exits.

Chelsea stayed close despite Vincent’s objections.

Locker 317 stood beneath an old staircase in a disused section once rented to private railway clients.

Vincent inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked.

Inside sat a leather satchel.

No bomb.

No trap.

Just papers.

And a sealed envelope.

VINCENT.

His hands shook.

Chelsea stepped back.

“This is yours.”

He looked at her.

“Stay.”

Vincent opened it.

Isabella’s handwriting filled several pages.

He read silently at first.

Then sat on a nearby bench.

Chelsea watched his face change.

“What does it say?”

Vincent swallowed.

“She knew about Gabriel.”

Chelsea waited.

“She knew he loved her.”

“That doesn’t mean—”

“She used it.”

Chelsea frowned.

Vincent continued.

“She asked Gabriel to steal documents from my father.”

“That makes sense.”

“She let him believe there was a chance.”

Chelsea closed her eyes.

“Oh.”

Vincent looked devastated.

“Gabriel wasn’t imagining everything.”

“No.”

Vincent read further.

Then stopped.

Chelsea touched his shoulder.

“What?”

“She married me because she wanted access to my family.”

Chelsea’s heart hurt for him.

“Vincent—”

“She investigated my father before we met.”

He laughed once without humor.

“Our first meeting wasn’t accidental.”

Chelsea sat beside him.

“What else?”

He read.

Tears formed.

Then something changed.

He handed her the final page.

Chelsea read.

I told myself I could use Vincent without loving him. That lie survived exactly eleven days.

Chelsea stopped.

The letter continued.

By the time he asked me to marry him, the investigation no longer mattered more than he did. I tried to leave the entire thing behind when I became pregnant, but Dominic threatened the baby. I realized running would never save us.

Chelsea looked at Vincent.

He did.

If Vincent finds this someday, I need him to know: yes, I entered his life carrying a lie. But every day after I fell in love with him was true. Every laugh. Every argument. Every morning beside him. Our child. All of it. He was never my target after that. He became my home.

Vincent closed his eyes.

Chelsea took his hand.

“She loved you.”

He nodded.

“Even when it was complicated.”

“Especially then.”

A slow clap echoed through the hall.

Vincent stood immediately.

Dominic Russo stepped from the shadows.

Rosa stood beside him.

Alive.

Unharmed.

Dominic carried no weapon.

Vincent did.

“Release her.”

Rosa shook her head.

“Vincent, wait.”

Dominic smiled.

“She came voluntarily.”

Vincent stared at Rosa.

“Why?”

Rosa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because I needed to stop him from destroying the records.”

Dominic glanced around.

“You’ve always been dramatic, Rosa.”

“And you’ve always been evil.”

Dominic sighed.

“Such simple words for complicated men.”

Federal agents began moving in.

Dominic seemed unconcerned.

Chelsea noticed.

“Why aren’t you running?”

Dominic looked at her.

“Because there’s nowhere left to run.”

He removed a folder.

“Everything is here.”

Vincent frowned.

“What?”

“Names. Judges. politicians. Officers. Businesses.”

Dominic smiled sadly.

“Your father’s entire machine.”

Vincent stared.

“You’re surrendering?”

“No.”

Dominic reached inside his coat.

Vincent raised his gun.

“Don’t.”

Dominic slowly withdrew a small remote.

Chelsea’s blood froze.

“Bomb.”

Dominic smiled.

“All across the station?”

“No.”

He looked toward the satchel.

“In the evidence.”

Marco shouted through Vincent’s earpiece.

“Move!”

Vincent grabbed Chelsea.

Dominic pressed the button.

Nothing happened.

Dominic stared at the remote.

Rosa smiled.

“I removed the detonator.”

His face changed.

“You—”

Rosa slapped him.

Hard.

Chelsea’s mouth opened.

Vincent almost looked proud.

Federal agents flooded the corridor.

Dominic was thrown to the ground.

Agent Kane took the remote.

Rosa hugged Vincent.

He held her tightly.

“Never do that again.”

“I’m seventy-one. Stop ordering me around.”

Chelsea laughed.

Then Dominic looked up from the floor.

“You think this ends with me?”

Vincent turned.

Dominic smiled.

“Adrian confessed.”

“We know.”

“To Isabella’s murder.”

“Yes.”

“And once he does, he’ll demand protection.”

Chelsea felt uneasy.

Dominic continued.

“He already traded something valuable.”

Vincent asked, “What?”

Dominic looked directly at Chelsea.

“Her name.”

Chelsea froze.

Vincent moved between them.

“What does that mean?”

Dominic laughed.

“Adrian wasn’t the only person who saw Chelsea’s resemblance to Isabella.”

Kane pulled Dominic upright.

He twisted to deliver one final sentence.

“Your enemies now know exactly what Vincent Moretti loves.”

The evidence Isabella collected did more than clear Vincent.

It implicated half the men who had built his father’s organization.

For three days, arrests spread across the city.

Dominic.

Corrupt officials.

Business partners.

Former police officers.

Vincent could have disappeared.

Instead, he made a decision nobody expected.

He walked into the federal building with attorneys and negotiated cooperation.

Every illegal operation inherited from his father would be dismantled.

Every legitimate business separated.

Dirty assets surrendered.

In exchange, prosecutors agreed to consider the evidence showing Dominic had forged or manipulated many of Vincent’s records.

Chelsea found him sitting outside the conference room afterward.

“You’re giving it all up.”

“The criminal side.”

“That’s most of what people think you are.”

“I know.”

“Who are you without it?”

Vincent looked at her.

“I’d like to find out.”

Chelsea smiled.

He touched her cheek.

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“Anywhere.”

She laughed.

“You’re asking a broke waitress to run away with you?”

“No.”

His expression became serious.

“I’m asking Chelsea Dawson to choose me when she doesn’t have to.”

Her smile faded.

“That’s terrifying.”

“For me too.”

She leaned forward and kissed him.

This time there were no bullets.

No cameras.

No bounty.

At least, none they knew about.

Because two blocks away, a man sitting inside a parked sedan took a photograph of them.

He sent it to an encrypted group.

A single message accompanied it.

MORETTI IS VULNERABLE.

Responses arrived immediately.

One.

Three.

Seven.

Then twenty.

And somebody offered five million dollars.

May you like

Not for Chelsea’s death.

For her alive.
