Chapter 11 - THE WEDDING WITHOUT SECRETS

Grant and Lily married in the garden of the Connecticut mansion.
The same mansion where Grace had asked one innocent question.
The dining room remained unchanged.
Lily had considered replacing the table.
She decided against it.
Bad memories did not own furniture.
Rosa cried throughout the ceremony.
Daniel wore a suit and checked the tree line twice.
Michael attended with his wife and children.
Grace wore a white dress and a flower crown.
Before walking down the aisle, she looked at Grant.
“No bad men?”
Grant knelt.
“No bad men.”
“No shooting?”
“Absolutely no shooting.”
“No purple hurts?”
His expression softened.
“No purple hurts.”
Grace nodded.
“Okay.”
She walked down the aisle.
Lily followed.
Grant forgot every word of his prepared vows.
“You're beautiful,” he said.
Lily laughed.
“That is not the speech.”
“I've lost the speech.”
“You own three telecommunications companies.”
“Not anymore.”
The guests laughed.
Grant took her hands.
“I spent most of my life believing protection meant walls, cameras, and guards.”
He looked at Grace.
“I was wrong.”
Then at Lily.
“Protection begins with noticing.”
Lily's eyes filled.
“I promise to see you. Even when the truth is uncomfortable. Especially then.”
Lily whispered, “You had a speech after all.”
“Apparently.”
When it was Lily's turn, she looked at the man who once seemed too powerful to understand her.
“I survived quietly because I thought being invisible kept Grace and me safe.”
She smiled through tears.
“Then my daughter embarrassed me at your dinner table.”
Grace shouted, “Purple hurt!”
Everyone laughed.
Lily continued.
“She taught me that silence is not safety.”
Lily squeezed Grant's hands.
“You never saved me by giving me money or a mansion. You saved me the first time you believed me before I had enough courage to believe myself.”
Grant kissed her before the officiant gave permission.
The officiant sighed.
Grace clapped.
That night, they returned to the dining room.
Only Lily, Grant, and Grace.
Grace sat in the same booster seat.
Grant looked at Lily.
“Any bruises?”
“No.”
Grace inspected her mother's hands.
“No purple.”
Grant nodded seriously.
“Excellent.”
Grace looked at him.
“Daddy Grant?”
“Yes?”
“Mommy has baby.”
Silence.
Grant slowly turned toward Lily.
Lily stared at Grace.
“How do you know?”
“Mommy throw up.”
Grant looked at Lily.
Lily started laughing.
“I was going to tell you tonight.”
Grant stood.
“You're pregnant?”
“Yes.”
He looked stunned.
Then terrified.
Then happier than Lily had ever seen him.
He lifted her.
“Grant!”
“Careful baby!” Grace shouted.
Grant immediately put Lily down.
“Right.”
Lily laughed until she cried.
Grant placed his hand against her stomach.
“Another child.”
“Yes.”
Grace frowned.
“I want sister.”
Grant looked at Lily.
“Can we control that?”
“No.”
“Money?”
“No.”
“Connections?”
“Grant.”
“Understood.”
Grace leaned against them.
The three stood beside the table where their lives had changed.

This time, silence did not mean fear.
It meant peace.
