Chapter 4 — The Night They Came

“Whatever happens… do not let them take Laya.”

Daniel’s words had barely faded when the first SUV stopped in front of Scott’s house.

Then the second.

Black.

Tinted windows.

Engines still running.

Scott’s entire body locked.

Every primitive instinct screamed one thing.

Run.

Protect.

Survive.

Laya clung to him, confused by the sudden tension.

“Daddy?”

Scott lifted her instantly.

One arm under her knees.

The other around her back.

Copper was still tucked under her arm.

He looked toward the door.

“Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Can I trust you?”

Silence.

Long enough to hurt.

Then—

“No.”

Scott froze.

What?

Daniel continued.

“Not completely.”

Scott’s pulse spiked.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel’s voice remained calm.

“It means you should trust evidence, not titles.”

The statement hit harder than expected.

Not completely.

Honest.

Dangerously honest.

Scott asked the only thing that mattered.

“Are you here to help my daughter?”

Daniel answered instantly.

“Yes.”

Scott believed him.

Not because of the badge.

Because liars usually sell certainty.

Truth-tellers admit limits.

A car door slammed outside.

Then another.

Then another.

Too many.

Scott whispered—

“How many?”

Daniel answered.

“Five.”

Elena went pale.

“No…”

Five.

Too many for a random intimidation visit.

This was retrieval.

Planned.

Organized.

Professional.

Scott’s mind sharpened.

He looked around the house.

Small living room.

Kitchen.

Single hallway.

Two windows.

Back door.

Limited exits.

Too exposed.

Not defensible.

Laya buried her face in his shoulder.

“Daddy, I’m scared.”

Scott kissed her hair.

“I know.”

Then he made a decision.

He opened the door.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Daniel Reeves stood there.

Late forties.

Broad shoulders.

Weathered face.

Dark coat.

Sharp eyes.

Tired eyes.

Not polished detective.

A man carrying too much.

He immediately stepped inside and shut the door.

Fast.

Efficient.

He scanned the room.

Clocked Elena.

Clocked Laya.

Clocked exits.

Professional.

Scott spoke.

“Who are they?”

Daniel answered quietly.

“Private contractors.”

Scott frowned.

“For who?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Who do you think?”

The answer hit instantly.

His parents.

No.

Not just them.

Someone bigger.

Hospital.

Money.

Network.

Daniel continued.

“They don’t want witnesses.”

Scott’s blood froze.

Witnesses.

Plural.

He looked at Elena.

Then at Laya.

Then himself.

No.

This wasn’t just about custody anymore.

This was cleanup.

Daniel moved to the window.

Checked outside.

His face hardened.

“Damn.”

“What?”

“There are six now.”

Scott’s pulse exploded.

“Six?”

Daniel nodded.

“They brought backup.”

A heavy knock hit the door.

Not polite.

Commanding.

A male voice shouted.

“Open up!”

Another voice.

“This is private security!”

Daniel muttered.

“Lie.”

Scott asked—

“What do we do?”

Daniel turned.

No hesitation.

“Back door.”

Scott looked down the hall.

Rear exit.

Small yard.

Fence.

Neighbor’s property.

Possible.

Daniel continued.

“I’ll buy time.”

Scott stared.

“No.”

Daniel met his eyes.

“Listen carefully.”

The detective’s voice dropped.

“There’s something Janet discovered.”

Scott’s heart pounded.

Not now.

Daniel ignored that.

“They need Laya alive.”

Scott froze.

Alive.

Why?

“Why?”

Daniel answered.

“Because of Janet.”

No.

“What about Janet?”

Daniel exhaled.

Then delivered the truth.

“Janet copied more than billing records.”

Silence.

Scott stared.

“What?”

Daniel’s eyes shifted to Laya.

Then back.

“She hid evidence inside medical records.”

Scott stopped breathing.

No.

No.

No.

“What records?”

Daniel’s answer came like a blade.

“Laya’s.”

The room went dead silent.

Scott whispered—

“What?”

Daniel continued.

“Janet encrypted files.”

Scott stared blankly.

Encrypted?

Janet?

No.

Daniel nodded.

“She embedded data into prescription history.”

Elena whispered—

“She actually did it…”

Daniel continued.

“Billing records.”

“Vendor payments.”

“Transfer approvals.”

“Shell accounts.”

“All hidden in metadata.”

Scott could barely process.

Janet.

His Janet.

Quiet.

Warm.

Gentle.

Had built a digital dead-man switch?

No.

Daniel spoke clearly.

“They can’t destroy the evidence without destroying Laya’s full medical chain.”

Scott felt ice crawl through him.

Laya.

Her asthma file.

Her treatments.

Every record.

Evidence.

His daughter wasn’t just a target.

She was the key.

The pounding on the door intensified.

“OPEN THE DOOR!”

Wood shook.

Laya flinched.

Scott held her tighter.

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“They’re coming in.”

Scott whispered—

“Back door.”

Daniel nodded.

“Now.”

They ran.

Kitchen.

Back hall.

Laundry room.

Rear door.

Daniel opened it.

Cold Arizona air rushed in.

Then—

Flashlight beams.

Scott froze.

No.

Men already in the backyard.

Three.

Armed.

Silent.

Professional.

No escape.

Daniel cursed.

“They boxed us.”

The first crash came from the front door.

Wood splintered.

They were inside.

Scott turned.

No exits.

No options.

Only one thing left.

Fight.

The first man entered the hallway.

Black tactical jacket.

Earpiece.

No badge.

No insignia.

Just efficiency.

He saw Scott.

Saw Laya.

Raised a hand.

Not weapon.

Signal.

“Target located.”

Target.

Not child.

Target.

Scott’s vision narrowed.

Laya trembled.

“Daddy…”

The man stepped closer.

Voice calm.

“Mr. Calder.”

Scott said nothing.

“Hand over the child.”

Silence.

The man continued.

“No one gets hurt.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“That line should be retired.”

The second man entered.

Then third.

Three in front.

Three outside.

Six total.

No chance.

Unless—

The lead man looked at Daniel.

Recognition.

Interesting.

“Detective Reeves.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Bennett.”

So they knew each other.

Bad.

Very bad.

Bennett smiled faintly.

“You picked the wrong side.”

Daniel answered—

“No.”

A pause.

“You did.”

Bennett ignored him.

Eyes returned to Scott.

“Final warning.”

Scott’s voice emerged.

Cold.

Controlled.

“No.”

Bennett sighed.

“As expected.”

Then he moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Toward Laya.

Scott reacted instantly.

Primal.

Violent.

He slammed into Bennett with everything he had.

All 190 pounds of terror and fatherhood.

They crashed into the kitchen island.

Wood splintered.

Laya screamed.

Daniel attacked the second man.

Elena grabbed a glass vase.

Chaos erupted.

The third man lunged toward Scott.

Scott kicked backward.

Connected with a knee.

The man grunted.

Bennett recovered fast.

Too fast.

Trained.

He drove an elbow into Scott’s ribs.

Pain exploded.

Scott nearly dropped Laya.

No.

Never.

He shifted her higher with pure instinct.

One arm.

Still holding.

Still protecting.

Bennett saw the weakness.

His eyes narrowed.

Then—

He smiled.

Wrong.

Very wrong.

Scott saw it.

Too late.

Bennett stopped fighting.

Instead—

He spoke.

Quietly.

Directly.

“You fight like Janet.”

Everything stopped.

Scott froze.

No.

Bennett continued.

“She fought too.”

No.

Scott’s blood turned to ice.

No.

Bennett smiled.

And delivered the horror.

“I was there when she died.”

Silence.

The entire world vanished.

Scott whispered—

“What?”

Bennett’s voice remained calm.

Cruel.

Precise.

“She begged.”

Scott stopped breathing.

No.

No.

No.

Bennett watched his face.

Enjoying it.

“She kept saying your name.”

Scott’s body shook.

No.

“She said Scott would protect them.”

NO.

Rage detonated.

Pure.

Blinding.

Primal.

Scott roared.

Not human.

Animal.

Grief.

Love.

Murderous fury.

He handed Laya toward Daniel—

“TAKE HER!”

Daniel grabbed her.

Instantly.

Scott turned fully toward Bennett.

No restraint.

No fear.

Only violence.

He drove Bennett through the dining table.

Wood exploded.

Both crashed to the floor.

Bennett swung.

Scott blocked.

Punched.

Again.

Again.

Again.

Years of buried grief exploded.

Janet.

Hospital rooms.

Chemo.

Promises.

Funeral.

Loneliness.

Laya crying for her mother.

Every memory became force.

Bennett’s nose broke.

Blood sprayed.

Still he laughed.

Psychotic calm.

“Now you look like your father.”

Scott froze.

One fatal second.

His father?

What—

Bennett struck.

Hard.

Scott’s head hit tile.

Vision blurred.

Bennett mounted him.

Forearm crushing his throat.

Scott gasped.

Air gone.

Bennett whispered—

“There it is.”

Pressure increased.

Scott clawed.

Nothing.

Black spots filled his vision.

Bennett leaned closer.

And whispered the sentence that shattered everything.

“Your parents didn’t sell Laya.”

Scott stopped struggling.

What?

Bennett smiled.

“They sold Janet.”

Silence.

Scott’s soul left his body.

No.

No.

Impossible.

Bennett continued.

“Janet got too curious.”

No.

“Your parents gave us access.”

No.

“They told us where she’d be.”

No—

“They chose money.”

NO.

Scott thrashed violently.

Adrenaline surged.

He shoved upward.

Not enough.

Bennett pressed harder.

Vision fading.

Laya screamed somewhere distant.

“DADDY!”

The sound pierced everything.

Scott saw her.

Daniel fighting two men.

Elena bleeding.

Laya crying.

No.

No.

He promised.

Always come back.

Always.

Not here.

Not tonight.

Not like this.

Something inside him ignited.

Not rage.

Purpose.

Promise.

He twisted violently.

Found leverage.

Hip rotation.

Bridge.

Bennett slipped.

Half inch.

Enough.

Scott drove two fingers into Bennett’s injured nose.

Bennett screamed.

Grip broke.

Air rushed in.

Scott rolled.

Grabbed broken table leg.

Wood.

Heavy.

Sharp.

He swung.

CRACK.

Bennett collapsed.

Unconscious.

Silence lasted half a second.

Then—

Click.

Scott froze.

A gun pressed to the back of his head.

Another man.

Remaining security.

Cold voice.

“Drop it.”

Scott slowly lowered the broken wood.

Laya screamed.

“No!”

Daniel stopped moving.

Hands raised.

The man holding the gun spoke calmly.

“Give us the child.”

Scott stared ahead.

Breathing hard.

Blood on face.

Hands shaking.

No.

Gun pressed harder.

The man whispered—

“Last chance.”

Scott closed his eyes.

Janet’s voice.

Soft.

Warm.

Take care of her.

Laya’s voice.

Tiny.

Will you still come back?

His answer.

Always.

Always.

He opened his eyes.

And said—

“No.”

The gunman sighed.

Finger tightening—

Then—

BANG.

A gunshot exploded.

The man behind Scott jerked.

Collapsed.

Dead.

Silence.

Everyone froze.

Scott turned.

Smoke.

Gun.

Hands trembling.

Elena.

She had fired.

She stared at the body.

Horrified.

“I…”

She dropped the gun.

“I didn’t…”

No one moved.

Sirens exploded outside.

Police.

Real police.

Multiple units.

Too many lights.

Too many voices.

Daniel stared at the fallen gunman.

Then at Elena.

Then at Scott.

His face changed.

Not relief.

Horror.

Scott noticed instantly.

“What?”

Daniel whispered—

“No…”

Scott’s pulse spiked.

“What?”

Daniel looked at the dead man.

Then said the words that made Scott’s blood freeze.

“That wasn’t one of theirs.”

Silence.

Scott stared.

“What?”

Daniel’s face went pale.

He whispered—

“That man…”

A pause.

“…was undercover FBI.”

Federal Bureau of Investigation

The room stopped breathing.

Scott whispered—

“No.”

Daniel looked shattered.

Then came the real nightmare.

His next words.

Quiet.

Devastated.

“If FBI is here…”

A pause.

“…then someone bigger is running this.”

And then a new voice came from the shattered doorway.

Cold.

Female.

Familiar.

“Much bigger.”

Scott turned.

His blood turned to ice.

Standing in the doorway—

perfectly calm—

was his mother.

May you like

Marlene.

Smiling.
