Chapter 9 - THE DEAD BROTHERLuca Moretti had been twenty-four when his car exploded on Lake Shore Drive.

Dominic identified him through a ring and dental records.

The family held a closed-casket funeral.

Vittoria stood beside Dominic throughout the service.

Gabriel carried the casket.

Now security footage showed a man with Luca’s face removing Vittoria from the hospital.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

Dominic watched the video without speaking.

Elena stood beside him.

“You buried him too.”

“Yes.”

“How many dead people are returning?”

“Too many.”

Luca had always been the charming brother.

Dominic obeyed their father and learned the business.

Luca raced cars, disappeared for days, and convinced everyone to forgive him when he returned.

Antonio called Dominic the heir.

He called Luca the heart.

Dominic had loved and resented him in equal measure.

“Why would he take Vittoria?” Elena asked.

“Because she helped him disappear.”

Gabriel accessed old financial records.

After Luca’s apparent death, Vittoria transferred millions into offshore security companies.

One company later purchased the Canadian clinic where Ethan had been held.

Luca had not escaped the conspiracy.

He had been running it.

Ethan confirmed the possibility.

Cross often referred to someone called “the younger king.”

Luca wanted Dominic’s empire without Dominic’s responsibility.

The triplets changed succession rights, threatening his eventual claim.

Vittoria may have hidden Elena for her own reasons, but Luca manipulated both Vittoria and Margaret from the shadows.

He benefited from every conflict.

Dominic believed Elena betrayed him.

Elena believed Dominic killed Ethan.

Ethan believed Dominic killed Antonio.

Margaret and Vittoria fought each other.

Cross sold information to all sides.

Luca waited for the Moretti family to destroy itself.

A message arrived on Dominic’s private phone.

A photograph showed Vittoria tied inside the ballroom of the old Moretti estate.

Luca stood behind her.

COME HOME, BROTHER.

The estate had been empty since Antonio’s death.

Dominic maintained it but rarely visited.

It contained tunnels, safe rooms, and security systems designed by their father.

Luca knew all of them.

“He wants you angry,” Elena said.

“He always did.”

“Why?”

“Because I make mistakes when I’m angry.”

“Then don’t give him the version he expects.”

Dominic looked at her.

“Come with me.”

She stared.

“You usually order me to stay.”

“I am trying to learn.”

“I’m not entering an armed estate.”

“No. You’ll coordinate with Gabriel from the command vehicle.”

“That sounds dangerously close to partnership.”

“It is.”

Before leaving, Dominic spoke to the children.

He told them he needed to help Aunt Vittoria.

Caleb asked whether she was good.

Dominic answered.

“She has done bad things.”

“Then why help her?”

“Because being good is not the price someone pays before we save their life.”

Caleb thought about it.

“Did Mom teach you that?”

“Yes.”

Elena heard from the doorway.

The operation began after sunset.

Dominic entered the estate through the front door.

No weapon in his hands.

Luca waited in the ballroom beneath a chandelier their mother had chosen.

Vittoria sat tied to a chair near the fireplace.

Luca smiled.

“You look old.”

“You look alive.”

“Disappointed?”

“Confused.”

“That was always your weakness. You needed the world to make sense.”

Dominic walked closer.

“Why disappear?”

“Father planned to remove me from the inheritance.”

“So you helped kill him.”

Luca laughed.

“Margaret poisoned him. Vittoria opened the door. I simply made certain no doctor arrived in time.”

Vittoria closed her eyes.

“You told me Antonio was already dead,” she whispered.

“He was dying. Details.”

Dominic’s hands tightened.

“Why Elena?”

“She gave you something Father never could.”

“What?”

“A life outside the family.”

Luca’s smile faded.

“You were going to change everything for her.”

Dominic remembered the months before Elena disappeared.

He had planned to sell illegal routes, move them away from the estate, and build a legitimate company.

He had told no one except Luca.

“You betrayed me.”

“I saved the empire.”

“You wanted it.”

“Yes.”

The honesty surprised no one.

Luca moved behind Vittoria.

“But then Elena became pregnant. Three heirs complicated the structure.”

“You knew before I did.”

“Margaret’s doctor reported to us.”

Elena heard through Dominic’s transmitter.

Her hand closed around the console.

Luca continued.

“Vittoria wanted the children. Margaret wanted revenge. I encouraged both.”

“You arranged Bellini’s.”

“Yes.”

“You fired into the room.”

“No. Cross did. He became overenthusiastic.”

“Why bring me to Elena?”

“I needed you to acknowledge the children before your death.”

Dominic looked toward Vittoria.

“And her?”

“She planned to confess. Family loyalty has become unfashionable.”

Luca raised a gun toward her.

Dominic stepped between them.

Luca laughed.

“She stole five years from you.”

“So did you.”

“She made Elena fear you.”

“You created the lie.”

“She helped kill Father.”

“So did you.”

Vittoria began to cry silently.

Dominic had never seen her cry.

Luca’s expression hardened.

“You always protect the wrong people.”

“No. I’m protecting what remains of myself.”

He moved closer.

“Let her go.”

“Sign over Moretti Global.”

“No.”

“Then she dies.”

“Kill her, and you still own nothing.”

“I will own it when you die.”

Dominic glanced toward the chandelier.

Its reflection showed movement in the upper gallery.

Luca’s guards.

Dominic needed time.

“Suppose I sign. What happens to Elena and the children?”

“They leave the country.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No. I expect you to sign because hope makes men stupid.”

The old Dominic would have attacked.

Elena’s voice came through his hidden earpiece.

“Three guards on the gallery. Gabriel is in position.”

Dominic kept his gaze on Luca.

“You were right about one thing.”

“What?”

“Elena changed me.”

Luca smiled.

“Made you weak.”

“Made me ask for help.”

Gabriel’s team entered from the upper level.

The gallery guards were disarmed before they could fire.

Luca seized Vittoria and pulled her toward a side passage.

Dominic followed.

The passage led beneath the estate into old wine cellars.

Luca knew every turn.

He reached the underground dock where a boat waited on a channel connected to the lake.

Vittoria stumbled.

Luca released her and fired toward Dominic.

The bullet struck stone.

Dominic returned fire, hitting Luca’s leg.

Luca fell beside the boat.

Dominic approached.

His brother laughed through the pain.

“Do it.”

Dominic aimed.

Ten years of grief.

Five years without Elena.

Three children nearly killed.

His father poisoned.

Everything led to one simple act.

Then Dominic lowered the weapon.

Luca’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t deserve mercy.”

“This isn’t mercy.”

Federal agents entered behind Dominic.

“It is evidence.”

Luca reached toward a second weapon hidden near his ankle.

Vittoria kicked it into the water.

Agents arrested him.

As they lifted him, Luca stared at Dominic.

“The empire will collapse.”

Dominic looked toward the stairs where Elena appeared beside Gabriel.

“Then we build something better.”

Vittoria survived.

She agreed to testify against Luca, Margaret, Cross, and the remaining criminal network.

In exchange, she expected a reduced sentence.

Dominic promised nothing.

Elena visited her once.

Vittoria sat inside a guarded hospital room.

“I loved Dominic,” she said.

“You controlled him.”

“I raised him.”

“You taught him love was obedience.”

Vittoria looked away.

“Antonio would have destroyed him.”

“So you helped destroy everyone first.”

“I thought the family needed strength.”

Elena stood.

“My children will know the Moretti name. They will also know it does not own them.”

Vittoria looked toward the window.

“Will Dominic forgive me?”

“That is not mine to answer.”

“Will you?”

“No.”

The answer was honest.

Elena left without cruelty.

Back at the farmhouse, Dominic announced his plan to the leaders of Moretti Global.

All illegal operations would end.

Private enforcement units would dissolve.

Financial records would be given to independent auditors.

The company would cooperate with federal investigations.

Half the room objected.

One man threatened Dominic directly.

Gabriel removed him.

The others understood.

The empire did not collapse overnight.

It changed painfully.

Contracts disappeared.

Politicians stopped returning calls.

Rival organizations targeted warehouses.

Dominic lost money.

He also began arriving at breakfast.

The triplets learned his habits.

Caleb discovered Dominic read the newspaper before speaking.

Noah learned he could convince Dominic to eat pancakes by placing them directly on his plate.

Sophie began carrying two plastic horses, one for herself and one for him.

Elena watched the relationship grow.

She also watched Dominic struggle.

He woke from nightmares.

He checked windows repeatedly.

He positioned himself between the children and every unfamiliar person.

One evening, Elena found him standing outside their bedroom door.

“They’re sleeping,” she said.

“I know.”

“You checked.”

“Yes.”

“Twice.”

“Yes.”

She stood beside him.

“What are you afraid of?”

“That I’ll wake up and discover this was another lie.”

Elena took his hand.

“We’re here.”

“For tonight.”

“For tomorrow too.”

“You can’t promise that.”

“I can promise I will not disappear without speaking to you.”

Dominic looked at her.

It was not a promise to remain married.

They were not married anymore.

It was a promise to replace silence with choice.

He accepted it.

The following morning, the children’s school called.

A teacher had found Caleb fighting another boy.

Dominic and Elena arrived together.

The other child had told Caleb his father was a killer.

Caleb had punched him.

The principal expected Dominic to defend his son.

Instead, Dominic sat beside Caleb.

“Did you hit him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He said bad things.”

“Were they untrue?”

Caleb stared at the floor.

“I don’t know.”

Dominic spoke carefully.

“I have hurt people.”

Elena watched.

“I made choices I regret. You do not have to fight anyone who talks about me.”

“But he said you were bad.”

“Some people have good reasons to believe that.”

Caleb’s eyes filled.

“Are you?”

Dominic looked at his son.

“I am trying not to be.”

Caleb leaned against him.

The principal softened.

Outside, Elena touched Dominic’s arm.

“That was the hardest thing you’ve done, wasn’t it?”

“Luca had a gun.”

“That was easier.”

“Yes.”

She kissed his cheek.

Dominic stopped walking.

Elena continued toward the car.

He followed with the faintest smile.

Then Gabriel called.

Federal prosecutors had accepted Dominic’s cooperation agreement.

He would avoid charges for some operations in exchange for testimony.

But one case remained outside the agreement.

A murder committed six years earlier.

The victim was a journalist investigating Moretti Global.

Evidence placed Dominic at the scene.

If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

And the main witness was Elena’s mother.
