Chapter 6 - The Woman Before EleanorThe flash drive contained twelve videos.

Nora had recorded them secretly.
Some from her phone.
Some from estate cameras before Eleanor wiped the primary system.
Some were only audio.
Julian watched in silence while Daniel took notes and Marcus stood behind him with his hands clasped like he was holding himself back from violence.
The first video showed Eleanor before the wedding.
She stood outside Lily’s bedroom, speaking into her phone.
“She still asks too many questions about Clara,” Eleanor said. “No, Julian is blind when it comes to guilt. That is useful.”
A man’s voice answered, distorted by distance.
“Do not rush. The trust documents matter more than the child.”
Trust documents.
Julian paused the video.
Daniel looked up sharply.
“Lily’s trust?”
Julian nodded.
Clara had left Lily a protected trust.
Untouchable by Julian.
Untouchable by any spouse.
Unless Lily was declared emotionally unfit and placed under external guardianship.
Julian felt the entire scheme unfold at once.
Send Lily away.
Control the narrative.
Gain influence over guardianship.
Then access.
Not just cruelty.
Money.
Power.
Erasure.
The second video showed Nora confronting Eleanor.
“You don’t love that child,” Nora said.
Eleanor’s reply was calm.
“Love is not required to manage a household.”
“She is not a household.”
“She is an inheritance problem.”
Marcus swore under his breath.
Julian did not move.
The third file was audio only.
Nora’s voice shook.
“Mr. Sterling, if I cannot reach you, please know I tried. Mrs. Sterling has taken Lily’s letters before they leave the house. She tells the child you do not answer because you are disappointed. I have hidden copies.”
Julian covered his eyes.
Letters.
Lily had written to him.
He had never received them.
Because Eleanor had stolen not only his daughter’s safety.
She had stolen her voice.
Marcus placed a shoebox on the desk.
“We found this in Eleanor’s locked wardrobe.”
Inside were dozens of envelopes.
All addressed in childish handwriting.
Daddy.
Daddy please.
Daddy I’m sorry.
Daddy can you come to my room tonight?
Julian picked up the top letter.
The paper was wrinkled.
Tear-stained.
Dear Daddy,
I know you are busy. Eleanor says busy people don’t like crying. I will try not to cry. I miss Mommy. I miss you too even though you are downstairs sometimes.
Love, Lily.
Downstairs sometimes.
Julian had been in the same house.
Only a hallway away.
And his daughter had believed he was unreachable.
He placed the letter down as if it might break.
“Where is Eleanor now?”
Marcus answered. “In the east guest suite. Police are on the way. She’s no longer speaking to anyone.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
He listened.
His face changed.
“What?” Julian asked.
Daniel ended the call.
“Eleanor’s attorney has filed for emergency protection.”
Julian stared.
“Against whom?”
“You.”
Marcus stepped forward. “That’s insane.”
Daniel’s voice was grim.
“She claims you are unstable, that you used illegal surveillance, that Lily has been coached, and that Eleanor fears you’ll fabricate evidence to protect your image.”
Julian almost smiled.
It was the kind of smile that made boardrooms go silent.
“She wants a public fight.”
Daniel nodded.
“She thinks your reputation is your weakness.”
Julian looked at the shoebox of stolen letters.
“No.”
He stood.
“My weakness was believing home didn’t need the same scrutiny as business.”
He picked up Lily’s first letter.
“My reputation can burn.”
At that moment, the library door opened.
Lily stood there, pale and barefoot, holding the rabbit.
“Daddy?”
Julian moved toward her.
She pointed to the shoebox.
“Those are mine.”
He knelt. “Yes.”
“I thought you didn’t write back.”
His voice failed.
Lily’s eyes filled again.
“I waited by the window.”
Julian pulled her into his arms.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I am so sorry.”
Over Lily’s shoulder, he looked at Daniel.
The decision was already made.
Eleanor wanted the world to hear a story.
Fine.

Julian would give them the truth.
Every last recorded second of it.
