Chapter 8 - The Facility on Willow RoadThe facility sat behind iron gates twenty-seven miles outside the city.

Willow Road Recovery Center.

A peaceful name for a place that did not want questions.

Julian arrived with police, Daniel, and a court order.

The director, a nervous man named Paul Henley, tried to delay them in the lobby.

“There must be a misunderstanding,” he said. “Our patient privacy standards are strict.”

Daniel handed him the paperwork.

“So are court orders.”

Henley swallowed.

Julian said nothing.

He simply looked at the man until Henley stopped pretending.

They found Nora Bell in Room 14.

She was thinner.

Older.

Her hair had been cut short.

But when Julian stepped into the doorway, her eyes filled instantly.

“Mr. Sterling,” she whispered.

Julian crossed the room.

“Nora.”

She tried to sit up, but her hands shook.

“I tried to call you.”

“I know.”

“She took my phone.”

“I know.”

“She said Lily would be next if I fought.”

Julian closed his eyes.

Behind him, Daniel asked the nurse for records.

Nora gripped Julian’s sleeve with surprising strength.

“Where is Lily?”

“Safe.”

Nora began to cry.

“Does she think I left her?”

“No.”

It was not entirely true.

Lily had feared it.

But fear was not belief.

Julian would not let Eleanor have that final cruelty.

Nora told them everything in fragments.

Eleanor had confronted her after finding copies of Lily’s letters.

Nora threatened to go to Julian directly.

That night, Eleanor’s driver took Nora “to meet Mr. Sterling.”

Instead, Nora was brought to Willow Road.

Paperwork claimed she was Elise Ward, a woman suffering delusions and identity confusion.

The signature authorizing admission?

Eleanor Sterling.

The emergency contact?

A number connected to Eleanor’s private assistant.

Julian listened without moving.

Every detail built the cage around Eleanor tighter.

Then Nora said something that made Daniel stop writing.

“She wasn’t alone.”

Julian leaned in.

“Who helped her?”

Nora looked frightened.

“Her brother.”

Julian frowned. “Eleanor told me she had no siblings.”

“She lied.”

Of course she had.

“What is his name?”

Nora looked toward the door as if he might be there.

“Graham Whitmore.”

Marcus, who had been silent near the window, stiffened.

“I know that name.”

Julian turned.

Marcus continued. “Graham Whitmore worked corporate security years ago. Not for us. For one of your competitors.”

Daniel looked at Julian.

“Which competitor?”

Marcus answered.

“Hawthorne Capital.”

Julian felt the old business world return like a shadow.

Hawthorne Capital.

A rival firm that had lost billions after Sterling Tower beat them to a merger five years ago.

A firm led by Victor Hawthorne.

A man who smiled like a friend while sharpening knives behind his back.

Julian looked back at Nora.

“Are you sure?”

Nora nodded.

“He came to the estate twice. Eleanor called him Gray. He told her the child had to be removed before the trust review.”

Trust review.

Again.

Julian’s daughter had been targeted like an asset.

Not by one cruel stepmother.

By a network.

That night, Lily waited in the library when Julian returned.

Nora came with him.

For a moment, the little girl did not move.

Then the rabbit slipped from her arms.

“Nora?”

Nora dropped to her knees.

“My little moon.”

Lily ran into her arms.

The sound she made was not quite a sob and not quite a laugh.

Julian turned away to give them privacy.

But he heard Lily whisper, “I thought everyone leaves.”

Nora held her tighter.

“Not everyone.”

From across the room, Julian made a silent promise.

No one who had made Lily believe that would remain untouched.

Not Eleanor.

Not Graham.

May you like

Not Hawthorne.

No one.
