Chapter 2: The Café Fell Silent

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The sounds of the café continued around them—espresso machines hissing, cups clinking against saucers, quiet conversations drifting through the room—but to Caris, everything seemed far away.

"Liam," she said evenly. "Leave."

He smiled.

It was the same smile she remembered from years ago.

The one that never reached his eyes.

"I didn't think you'd recognize me."

"I recognized your voice."

His gaze lingered on the ultrasound photo lying beside her coffee.

"So..." he said quietly. "You really moved on."

Caris slid the photograph into her purse.

"That isn't your business."

"No?"

His smile faded.

"I spent four years with you."

"You spent four years trying to control me."

Several customers glanced toward their table.

Liam ignored them.

"I heard you married well."

"I married someone kind."

His jaw tightened.

"So that's what people are calling rich these days?"

Caris stood.

"Our conversation is over."

She reached for her purse.

Liam grabbed her wrist.

Not hard.

Just enough.

Every muscle in her body froze.

Old memories returned all at once.

Doors slammed.

Apologies she never owed.

Walking on eggshells.

Wondering which version of Liam would come home.

She slowly pulled her wrist free.

"Don't touch me."

"You used to like when I held your hand."

"I used to believe your promises."

His expression darkened.

"So that's it?"

"What?"

"You replace me with a billionaire and suddenly you're too good to even speak to me?"

Caris looked him directly in the eye.

"No."

She kept her voice calm.

"I finally learned the difference between love and fear."

Across the café, several people had stopped pretending not to watch.

A young barista quietly reached beneath the counter.

"Should we call someone?" another employee whispered.

"I already did."

Liam leaned closer.

"You think he loves you?"

"I know he does."

"You really believe men like him stay faithful?"

Caris didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Daniel had never once given her a reason to doubt him.

Liam laughed bitterly.

"I used to know everything about you."

"No," she replied.

"You only knew the version of me that was afraid."

His eyes drifted toward her purse again.

"The baby."

Caris instinctively rested one hand over it.

"What about my baby?"

"How far along?"

She didn't answer.

"Does he know?"

Again...

Silence.

Liam's breathing became heavier.

"You should have had my child."

Caris felt ice spread through her chest.

"There was never going to be a 'your child.'"

His face twisted.

"What did you say?"

"You heard me."

The waitress carrying fresh coffee paused halfway across the room.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She quietly set the tray down and moved toward the manager.

Liam's voice dropped almost to a whisper.

"You owe me."

Caris stared at him.

"I owe you?"

"You walked away."

"I escaped."

"You embarrassed me."

"You abused me."

His eyes flashed.

"I never hit you."

"You don't have to leave bruises to hurt someone."

The sentence landed harder than she expected.

Even Liam looked surprised.

For years she had blamed herself.

Today...

She didn't.

"I'm leaving," Caris said.

She stepped around the table.

Liam blocked her path.

"I said move."

Instead...

He noticed the corner of the ultrasound picture sticking out of her purse.

With frightening speed, he snatched it.

Caris gasped.

"Give that back."

He looked down.

The tiny image.

The doctor's name.

The date.

The words:

Estimated Gestation: 6 Weeks.

His face changed completely.

"You're pregnant."

The café became quiet.

Several people were openly watching now.

Caris reached for the photograph.

"Give it back."

He held it higher.

"So it's true."

She grabbed his arm.

"Liam."

He yanked away.

"You left me..."

His voice cracked.

"...and now you're having his baby?"

People nearby stood from their chairs.

The manager started walking toward them.

"Sir," he called. "I'm going to ask you to leave."

Liam didn't even look at him.

His attention never left Caris.

"I gave you everything."

"No."

She shook her head.

"You took everything."

Something inside Liam finally snapped.

His hand shot forward.

The ultrasound fluttered onto the table.

His fingers wrapped around Caris's throat.

The chair crashed backward.

Gasps filled the café.

Caris stumbled against the marble table as hot coffee spilled across the surface.

She clawed at his wrist.

"Liam..."

His grip tightened.

"You think you get a happy ending?"

Customers shouted.

Someone screamed.

The manager dialed 911.

A man at a nearby table started toward them—

Then stopped.

Because another man had already entered through the front door.

He wasn't running.

He wasn't shouting.

He simply walked forward with calm, deliberate steps.

His charcoal suit was immaculate despite the rain outside.

His expression revealed nothing.

Only his eyes had changed.

Cold.

Focused.

Dangerously calm.

Daniel Russo had arrived.

He took in the scene in a single glance.

The overturned chair.

The spilled coffee.

The ultrasound lying on the table.

His wife's terrified face.

And Liam's hand around her throat.

Daniel stopped less than six feet away.

His voice was quiet enough that everyone in the café had to lean in to hear it.

"Take."

A pause.

"Your hand."

Another.

"Off my wife."

Liam laughed without turning around.

"And who exactly are you supposed to be?"

May you like

Daniel's expression never changed.

"The last mistake you make today."
