Chapter 3: The Last Warning

Liam laughed.

The sound echoed through the café, loud enough to make several customers flinch.

"And who exactly are you supposed to be?" he sneered.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

His attention stayed on Caris.

"Are you hurt?"

Caris's hand trembled as she touched the side of her neck where Liam's fingers had left angry red marks.

"I... I'm okay."

Daniel studied her for one long second.

She knew that look.

It wasn't uncertainty.

It was assessment.

Was she breathing normally?

Any signs of dizziness?

Any indication Liam had squeezed hard enough to damage her airway?

Only after convincing himself she was standing on her own did Daniel look at the man in front of him.

"I asked you to let go," he said quietly.

Liam scoffed.

"Or what?"

The manager hurried over.

"Sir, the police are on their way. Everyone needs to calm down."

Liam ignored him.

"So this is the husband?"

He looked Daniel up and down.

"Expensive suit."

Nice watch."

"Big office job."

He smirked.

"I guess money really does impress her."

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"You have ten seconds to walk away."

Liam stepped closer instead.

"You think I'm afraid of you?"

"No."

Daniel's voice remained calm.

"I think you're making decisions you'll regret."

Around them, customers slowly backed away from the confrontation.

One woman guided her young son toward the exit.

A college student discreetly began recording on his phone.

The café, moments earlier filled with casual conversation, had fallen almost completely silent.

Caris reached for Daniel's sleeve.

"Please."

He turned his head slightly.

"You don't have to—"

"I'm not leaving you here."

His words were soft.

Certain.

Simple.

The certainty in them made Caris's eyes fill with tears.

For years she had learned to expect fear.

Excuses.

People telling her not to "make things worse."

Daniel had never once asked her to carry danger alone.

Liam noticed the exchange and laughed again.

"She really believes you're going to protect her."

"I am."

"You don't even know me."

Daniel met his eyes.

"I know enough."

He glanced at the bruises beginning to appear around Caris's neck.

"I know you assaulted my wife."

"I barely touched her."

Every witness in the café looked at Liam in disbelief.

The barista spoke first.

"That's not true."

All heads turned toward her.

She swallowed.

"You grabbed her throat."

An elderly customer nodded.

"So did I."

"I saw it."

"So did we," another couple added.

Within seconds, half the café was speaking.

"We all saw him."

"He attacked her."

"He wouldn't let her leave."

Liam's confidence faltered.

For the first time since entering the café, he realized something.

He wasn't controlling the story.

Dozens of strangers had watched everything.

The manager pointed toward the security camera mounted above the register.

"And so did that."

Liam followed his finger.

The camera's small red recording light blinked steadily.

His face lost color.

Daniel didn't smile.

He simply said,

"That's unfortunate for you."

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Growing louder.

Liam glanced toward the windows.

"You called the cops?"

"I didn't have to."

The manager raised his phone.

"Someone already did."

Blue lights reflected across the café windows.

Two patrol cars stopped outside.

Three officers entered within seconds.

"Police!"

One officer looked around the room.

"Everyone stay where you are."

The manager immediately pointed.

"Him."

The barista nodded.

"He attacked her."

"So did he," another customer added.

"And I recorded part of it."

Several phones were already raised.

The lead officer approached Caris.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

Daniel answered carefully.

"My wife was assaulted."

The officer looked at the red marks around Caris's neck.

"Medical assistance is on the way."

Another officer turned toward Liam.

"Sir, place your hands where I can see them."

"This is ridiculous," Liam protested.

"She knows me."

Caris finally spoke.

"I used to."

Silence.

"I don't anymore."

The officer repeated himself.

"Hands."

Liam hesitated.

Then slowly complied.

Handcuffs clicked into place.

The sound echoed through the café.

As officers escorted Liam toward the door, he twisted back toward Caris.

"This isn't over!"

Daniel took one step forward.

Not threatening.

Not angry.

Simply close enough that only Liam could hear him.

"It is."

Liam stared at him.

Daniel's voice remained level.

"You'll have your chance to explain yourself."

He glanced toward the patrol car waiting outside.

"To the detectives."

Liam was led out of the café.

The doors closed behind him.

Only then did Daniel turn fully toward Caris.

She had been holding herself together through sheer determination.

The moment she looked into his eyes, that determination broke.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

Daniel frowned gently.

"For what?"

"I wanted today to be perfect."

He reached into his pocket.

Carefully unfolded the ultrasound photograph Liam had dropped.

Smoothed its bent corner with his thumb.

Then handed it back to her.

"You protected this."

Caris looked down at the tiny image.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I wanted to surprise you tonight."

Daniel stared at the photograph.

His eyes moved to the doctor's notes.

Then back to Caris.

He looked at her stomach.

Very slowly...

Understanding dawned.

His voice was barely audible.

"Caris..."

She nodded through her tears.

"We're having a baby."

For the first time since entering the café, Daniel's composure slipped.

His eyes filled.

May you like

He stepped forward, wrapped his arms around her with extraordinary care, and whispered into her hair,

"The best surprise of my life."
