Chapter 5: The Infiltration of Meridian

The glass towers of the First National Meridian Bank in downtown Atlanta soared fifty stories into the morning fog. I walked through the grand marble lobby at 9:00 AM, dressed in a pristine navy-blue suit, projecting the absolute confidence of a multi-millionaire CEO who belonged in the room. In my breast pocket sat a tiny, high-frequency cloning device that David had configured back at the cabin.
My heart was thumping a frantic rhythm against my ribs, but my face remained an unreadable mask of corporate authority. I took the private executive elevator directly to the 45th floor—the domain of Marcus Bennett.
When the elevator doors opened, the receptionist smiled warmly. “Mr. Carter! Welcome. Ashley told us you might be stopping by before your appointments tomorrow. Mr. Bennett is currently in a conference call, but you can wait in his private office.”
“Thank you, Sarah,” I said smoothly, stepping past her desk and walking down the wood-paneled hallway.
Marcus’s office was a monument to unearned wealth—expensive leather chairs, rare art pieces, and a panoramic view of the city skyline. I walked straight to his mahogany desk. There, sitting right next to his leather blotting pad, was his ring of keys, complete with the heavy, brushed-steel hardware token that David had described.
I reached out, my hand steady despite the sweat on my palms, and pressed the cloning device directly against the steel token. The device hummed softly, a tiny green light flashing three times as it extracted the encrypted security protocols.
Ten seconds.Twenty seconds.Thirty seconds.
“Michael? What the hell are you doing in here?”
A sharp, angry voice shattered the silence. I snapped my hand back, slipping the cloning device into my pocket as I turned around. Marcus Bennett stood in the doorway, his tie loosened, his face twisted in a mask of sudden suspicion. He walked into the room, his eyes instantly darting to his desk, then to my face.
“I was just looking for you, Marcus,” I said, forcing a calm smile as I leaned against the edge of the desk. “I wanted to talk about the asset optimization bundle before the signing tomorrow. I wanted to make sure our shipping licenses are fully integrated into the new holding structure.”
Marcus’s eyes narrowed, his fingers reaching down to snatch his keys off the desk, checking the hardware token thoroughly before stuffing them into his pocket. “The paperwork is handled, Michael. Ashley has everything under control. You don't need to worry about the logistics. Just show up on Tuesday, sign the registry, and enjoy your new partnership. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a compliance audit to attend to.”
“Of course,” I said, walking past him with a polite nod.
The moment the elevator doors closed behind me, I pulled out my phone and connected it to the cloning device. “David, did you get it?”

“I got the stream!” David’s voice crackled through my earpiece, filled with wild, triumphant energy. “The data clone is clear. I’m downloading the ledger right now. Michael... it’s bigger than we thought. Marcus isn't just laundering money. He’s been funneling Carter Global’s corporate reserve funds straight into Ashley’s personal accounts for the last twelve months. They didn't just frame Emily to get her out of the picture—they framed her to cover up the fact that they were systematically draining your entire family legacy before the wedding even happened!”
“Launch the counter-strike, David,” I said, my voice turning into iron as the elevator hit the ground floor. “Call the federal authorities. Send everything to the board of directors. Let's show Ashley what happens when you try to steal a man's family.”
