Chapter 6: The Emergency Injunction

By 3:00 PM that afternoon, the financial world exploded. David’s data dump had bypassed local authorities and landed directly on the desks of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's white-collar crime division.
I sat in the secure conference room of my legal counsel, flanked by three senior attorneys who had been with my family for generations. Across the long glass table sat Ashley, her brother Marcus, and their legal team. The smug, arrogant composure that Ashley had carried at the rural shelter was completely gone, replaced by a frantic, vibrating panic. Her white pantsuit looked rumpled, her eyes wild as she stared at the digital screens displaying their frozen offshore routing paths.
“This is an outrage!” Ashley’s lead attorney shouted, slamming his hand onto the table. “This evidence was acquired through illegal hacking methods! It is completely inadmissible in a court of law! The corporate realignment contract signed by Mr. Carter is still legally binding, and we demand the immediate release of the frozen funds!”
“It’s not inadmissible when the data was extracted from a corporate server that belongs to Carter Global,” my chief counsel replied smoothly, sliding a fresh stack of documents across the glass. “Under Section 4 of the shipping logistics optimization bundle that your client drafted, Mr. Carter retained full administrative auditing rights over all connected nodes. Marcus Bennett used a company-issued terminal to execute the illegal transfers. You didn't just steal from Michael, counselor—you used his own keys to open the safe, which legally grants him access to everything you hid inside.”
Marcus Bennett buried his face in his hands, his body shaking violently. “Ashley, I told you this was too risky. I told you we should have just taken the initial settlement and walked away! They have the routing numbers! The feds are outside the building right now!”
“Shut up, Marcus!” Ashley screamed, her voice rising into a terrifying, unhinged shriek as she stood up from her chair, her fingers clawing at the edge of the table. She looked at me with an intensity of hatred that would have frozen water. “You think you’ve won, Michael? You think you can just bring that filthy, homeless girl back into your house and pretend this year never happened? The press is already outside! I’ve leaked the photos of Emily’s arrest! By tomorrow morning, your name will be mud! No one will ever do business with Carter Global again!”
The door to the conference room opened with a quiet, authoritative click.
Two tall men in dark suits with gold federal badges pinned to their lapels stepped into the room. They didn't look at the attorneys; they walked straight toward Marcus and Ashley.
“Ashley Bennett, Marcus Bennett,” the lead agent said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion as he pulled two sets of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, and criminal conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent.”
Ashley stumbled backward, her chair knocking against the glass wall behind her as the agents moved forward, grabbing her wrists and clicking the steel shut with a brutal, definitive snap. “Michael! You can't do this to me! I loved you! I gave you everything! I saved you from her!”

“You didn't save me from anything, Ashley,” I said, standing up slowly, looking down at her with a profound, calm disgust. “You showed me exactly what a monster looks like. Take her out of my sight.”
As the agents led them away in chains, the heavy silence of justice finally settled over the room. I turned to my attorneys. “Draw up the final restitution papers. Every dollar they stole from Carter Global is to be placed into an irrevocable educational trust fund for Samuel and Daniel Carter. And clear Emily’s legal record completely by midnight.”
