CHAPTER 5 – The Truth Daniel Died Protecting

The first explosion had been only a distraction.

Nathan Hayes realized it before the smoke had even begun to clear.

Standing in the security command center beneath the Stratix executive residence, he watched dozens of surveillance feeds flicker across a wall of monitors. The blast at the northern fence had drawn every guard toward one corner of the property.

Exactly as the attackers intended.

"They're not trying to get in," Nathan said quietly.

General Morrison looked up from the tactical map.

"What do you mean?"

Nathan zoomed another camera.

"Look at the western tree line."

A black SUV sat nearly a mile away.

Engine running.

Lights off.

Watching.

"They're measuring our response time."

Richard Sullivan frowned.

"Reconnaissance."

Nathan nodded.

"They're learning our procedures."

Emily stood behind them, one hand resting protectively on her stomach.

"So they wanted us to panic."

"They wanted information."

"And now they have it."

Three hours later the estate had returned to uneasy silence.

Military engineers repaired the damaged perimeter while FBI technicians collected fragments from the destroyed drone.

Emily couldn't sleep.

Every time she closed her eyes she imagined another explosion.

Another phone call.

Another flag folded into a perfect triangle.

She wandered into the nursery that Stratix employees had begun preparing earlier that day.

The walls were painted soft blue.

A white crib waited beside the window.

Tiny blankets lay folded with impossible precision.

Her fingers brushed across the wooden railing.

Daniel should have been here.

He should have been arguing over baby names.

Laughing while pretending he knew how to assemble furniture.

Instead...

She was standing alone.

Again.

A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts.

Nathan stood in the doorway.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you."

Emily managed a small smile.

"I wasn't sleeping."

"I figured."

He held two mugs of hot tea.

"My grandmother believed tea solved everything."

Emily accepted one.

"Did it?"

Nathan chuckled.

"No."

"But it made difficult conversations easier."

For several minutes they stood together in silence.

Finally Emily spoke.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Anything."

"On Daniel's last mission..."

Nathan's expression softened.

"...was he afraid?"

Nathan looked out the nursery window before answering.

"Every Marine is afraid."

Emily nodded slowly.

"But Daniel never let fear decide what kind of man he would become."

Nathan reached into his jacket and removed a weathered notebook.

"I've been carrying this since the funeral."

Emily stared.

"What's that?"

"Your husband asked me to give it to you only if Orion was completed."

She carefully accepted it.

Inside the cover Daniel had written one sentence.

FOR OUR CHILD—SO YOU'LL KNOW WHO YOUR FATHER REALLY WAS.

Emily smiled through tears.

She turned the first page.

Instead of military reports...

She found letters.

Dozens of them.

One for every birthday.

Age five.

Age ten.

High school graduation.

First heartbreak.

College.

Wedding day.

Every milestone Daniel knew he might never see.

Emily pressed the notebook against her chest.

"He wrote all of these..."

Nathan nodded.

"During deployment."

"He said hope was another kind of weapon."

The next morning Stratix headquarters buzzed with unusual activity.

Federal investigators had worked through the night.

Ryan Mitchell had finally begun talking.

Agent Rebecca Lawson entered the conference room carrying another classified file.

"We've confirmed Helix wasn't working alone."

General Morrison looked up sharply.

"Go on."

Lawson placed several photographs on the table.

Board members.

Executives.

Politicians.

One face made Emily freeze.

"No..."

Richard leaned forward.

"What?"

Emily pointed.

"That's Senator Victor Lang."

Nathan frowned.

"The Armed Services Committee?"

Lawson nodded.

"For six years."

Emily couldn't believe it.

"He attended Daniel's memorial service."

"He did."

"And he sent me flowers."

Lawson's face remained expressionless.

"He also secretly approved funding for Helix shell companies."

Silence filled the room.

The corruption reached far higher than anyone imagined.

Ryan's recorded interrogation began playing through the speakers.

His voice shook.

"I thought they just wanted the software."

The FBI agent asked,

"And when did you realize otherwise?"

Ryan swallowed hard.

"When they asked about the widow."

Emily's stomach tightened.

"What did they ask?"

"They wanted to know if she'd finish Daniel's research."

"And?"

"I said yes."

The recording paused.

Emily looked away.

Nathan quietly squeezed her shoulder.

Ryan continued.

"They said if she finished it... she'd have to disappear like the others."

The room became completely silent.

General Morrison slowly removed his glasses.

Richard cursed under his breath.

Emily felt cold despite the warmth inside the room.

"So..."

She whispered.

"They planned to kill me."

Lawson answered honestly.

"Yes."

Before anyone could speak again, alarms suddenly sounded throughout the building.

Security personnel rushed into the conference room.

"Sir!"

Nathan turned instantly.

"What happened?"

"A cyberattack."

Richard's face turned pale.

"Our research servers?"

The technician nodded.

"Someone is trying to remotely activate every emergency protocol."

Computer screens across the room flashed red.

ACCESS BREACH DETECTED.

PROJECT ORION DATABASE COMPROMISED.

Emily stared at the monitor.

"No..."

She suddenly remembered something Daniel had once said.

"If anyone ever attacks Orion directly... don't defend the servers."

Nathan noticed her expression.

"What?"

Emily rushed toward a terminal.

"Daniel built something into the system."

"What?"

"A failsafe."

She typed rapidly.

Lines of encrypted code scrolled across the screen.

Richard watched in amazement.

"I've never seen this protocol."

"You weren't supposed to."

Emily entered one final password.

Her wedding anniversary.

The screen changed instantly.

AUTHORIZED USER VERIFIED.

ORION DEFENSIVE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

Across the network...

Every stolen access key became useless.

Every compromised server locked itself permanently.

The attackers had just lost years of preparation.

Nathan laughed for the first time all day.

"Daniel..."

Emily smiled through tears.

"He always planned three moves ahead."

At that exact moment...

Hundreds of miles away inside a luxurious penthouse overlooking Manhattan...

A man watched his computer screens suddenly go black.

Every file vanished.

Every connection disappeared.

His expression hardened.

"So..."

he murmured.

"The widow is smarter than her husband."

He slowly stood.

Behind him hung photographs of military projects spanning nearly a decade.

One photograph remained untouched.

Emily Carter.

Seven months pregnant.

Leaving her parents' garage.

He smiled coldly.

"If technology won't stop her..."

He reached for his phone.

"...then people will."

Back in Washington, Emily looked out the conference room window as snow began falling over the city.

She believed she had just won her first real battle.

She didn't know that somewhere in New York...

The mysterious leader of Helix Global had finally decided to stop hiding in the shadows.

May you like

And for the first time...

He was coming for her himself.
