CHAPTER 6 – The Man Behind Helix

The first snowfall of December drifted quietly across Washington.
Inside Stratix Defense Systems, no one noticed.
Every screen in the Cyber Defense Center glowed red.
Every analyst was working.
Every phone seemed to ring at once.
Emily Carter stood before the wall of monitors wearing jeans, Daniel's faded Navy sweatshirt, and a security badge that now granted her access to some of the most classified technology in the country.
Only six days earlier she had been sleeping in a freezing garage.
Now an entire defense network depended on her.
Nathan Hayes walked in carrying two cups of coffee.
"You've been here all night."
Emily accepted one with a tired smile.
"So have you."
He shrugged.
"Occupational hazard."
Before either of them could sit down, Agent Rebecca Lawson hurried into the room.
"We found him."
Everyone turned.
Nathan stood immediately.
"The Helix director?"
Lawson nodded.
"We finally have a name."
She placed a photograph onto the conference table.
A handsome man in his early fifties.
Silver hair.
Expensive suit.
Perfect smile.
Emily frowned.
"I've seen him before."
Richard Sullivan walked closer.
His face lost all color.
"No..."
Nathan looked at him.
"You know him?"
Richard slowly nodded.
"That's Victor Kane."
"The founder of Helix?"
"No."
Richard swallowed.
"He's the chairman of Meridian Aerospace."
Emily stared.
"One of the biggest defense contractors in America?"
"The biggest."
Silence spread through the room.
General Morrison closed the file.
"So Helix has been hiding behind a legitimate corporation."
Lawson nodded.
"For nearly fifteen years."
Nathan frowned.
"How many government contracts?"
"Hundreds."
"Military?"
"Most of them."
Emily whispered,
"Daniel wasn't fighting criminals."
"No."
General Morrison answered quietly.
"He was fighting businessmen."
Lawson switched on the projector.
Financial records appeared.
Offshore companies.
Secret transfers.
Military procurement fraud.
Every trail eventually pointed to Victor Kane.
"He never steals complete technology," Lawson explained.
"He waits until military families are grieving."
Emily clenched her fists.
"When people are emotionally vulnerable."
"Exactly."
"They're easier to manipulate."
Richard looked sick.
"So Daniel's death..."
Lawson nodded.
"Created an opportunity."
Emily suddenly remembered Ryan's words.
"They said I'd disappear like the others."
Lawson looked at her.
"Victor Kane has never personally harmed anyone."
Emily frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"He hires people."
"Professional contractors."
Nathan crossed his arms.
"And they've never failed."
Lawson didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
Later that afternoon Emily finally opened the second notebook Daniel had left behind.
Inside she found engineering sketches.
Then one folded page.
Across the top Daniel had written:
ONLY OPEN IF YOU FINISH ORION.
Emily unfolded it carefully.
The first sentence stopped her heart.
Victor Kane smiled at me the day he offered to buy Orion.
She read faster.
Daniel described a private defense conference two years earlier.
Victor Kane had approached him privately.
He offered unlimited funding.
Luxury laboratories.
Worldwide production.
All Daniel had to do...
...was surrender complete ownership.
Daniel refused.
Victor smiled.
Then quietly said,
"Everyone has a price."
Daniel answered,
"Not every soldier."
Emily closed her eyes.
Daniel had known exactly who Victor Kane was.
Nathan knocked gently before entering her office.
"You okay?"
Emily handed him the letter.
He read it silently.
Then looked up.
"He documented everything."
"He knew nobody would believe him without proof."
Nathan smiled sadly.
"That's Daniel."
Suddenly alarms echoed throughout the building.
Not cyber alarms.
Building alarms.
A security officer rushed inside.
"Sir!"
Nathan immediately reached for his radio.
"What happened?"
"Package delivery."
Richard blinked.
"A bomb?"
"No."
"What then?"
The officer looked directly at Emily.
"It was addressed to Mrs. Carter."
The package sat inside the bomb disposal chamber.
Heavy steel walls surrounded it.
Explosive technicians carefully opened the box.
Everyone watched through reinforced glass.
Inside...
No bomb.
No electronics.
Only one object.
A tiny pair of baby shoes.
Pink.
Perfectly folded.
Emily felt cold.
Underneath lay a handwritten note.
Nathan picked it up.
His jaw tightened.
"What does it say?"
He hesitated.
Emily stepped closer.
"Read it."
Nathan finally spoke.
"Congratulations on the baby."
Silence.
He continued.
"Some children grow up with fathers."
Emily couldn't breathe.
Nathan finished the final sentence.
"Some never get the chance."
No signature.
None was needed.
Victor Kane had just sent a message.
He knew she was pregnant.
He knew where she lived.
He wanted her afraid.
That night Nathan doubled every security team.
Military police surrounded the residence.
Snipers occupied nearby rooftops.
Emily sat alone in the nursery.
Her hands rested on her stomach.
The baby kicked gently.
She smiled through tears.
"I know."
"You miss Daddy too."
Then...
The home security system chimed softly.
Nathan's voice came through the intercom.
"Emily?"
"Yes?"
"We have visitors."
She walked downstairs.
Three black military SUVs stood outside.
General Morrison entered carrying a velvet case.
"I wasn't planning to do this until after the investigation."
Emily looked confused.
"Do what?"
He opened the case.
Inside rested Daniel's Silver Star.
Beside it...
Another medal.
She had never seen it before.
"The Defense Distinguished Civilian Service Medal."
Emily looked at him.
"But I've never served."
General Morrison smiled.
"You have."
He carefully pinned the medal onto her sweater.
"You completed the mission Daniel gave his life to protect."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
The room erupted into quiet applause.
Nathan stepped forward.
"There's something else."
Emily looked up.
"What?"
He handed her a small ultrasound frame.
Inside was the baby's newest scan.
The words beneath it read:
Future Defender.
Emily laughed for the first time in months.
It was small.
Fragile.
Real.
For one beautiful moment...
The grief became hope.
But far away in New York, Victor Kane watched live security footage stolen from a traffic camera outside the Stratix residence.
He smiled as Emily accepted Daniel's medals.
Then he turned toward a man waiting beside his desk.
"It's time."
The man nodded.
"The extraction team?"
Victor slowly buttoned his expensive suit.
"No."
He looked out over the Manhattan skyline.
"I'll deal with Mrs. Carter myself."
As snow continued falling across Washington...
Emily believed the worst was almost over.
She had no idea the mastermind behind Daniel's death was already on his way.
May you like
And their final confrontation would decide not only the future of Project Orion...
...but the future of the child she carried.
