Chapter 8 - THE DAY MY UNCLE DIEDThe reopening of Robert Walker’s death changed the investigation overnight.

What had been a domestic assault case had become financial conspiracy, corruption, attempted murder, blackmail—and potentially homicide.

Daniel’s attorney stopped giving television interviews.

Judge Bennett took emergency medical leave.

Thomas Greene disappeared.

Frank Nolan began negotiating.

Evelyn continued cooperating.

Everyone was running toward whatever version of the truth might save them.

I wanted one thing.

To know who had killed my uncle.

Jonathan Reed finally agreed to speak after federal agents placed his daughter under protection.

We met in a secure building outside Richmond.

Jonathan looked older than his photograph.

Sixty-three.

Thin.

Gray beard.

Eyes that moved constantly toward doors.

He looked at me for a long time.

“You have Robert’s eyes.”

I didn’t know what to say.

“You worked for him?”

“Eight years.”

“Why disappear?”

“Because I made a mistake.”

“What?”

“I trusted Sarah.”

There it was again.

Sarah.

Jonathan explained that Robert hired him after becoming suspicious of Daniel.

At first, Robert feared Daniel wanted my inheritance.

Then he discovered Daniel’s connection to Mercer House corruption.

Robert planned to expose him.

Sarah approached Jonathan privately.

She claimed she wanted to help.

“She gave me documents,” Jonathan said.

“Real?”

“Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

“She mixed truth with false information.”

“What kind?”

“Things designed to make Daniel look solely responsible.”

“Wasn’t he?”

Jonathan looked at me.

“Daniel was responsible for plenty. Just not everything.”

He opened a folder.

Photographs of Robert’s sailboat.

Weather records.

Marina logs.

Security footage.

On the day Robert died, Daniel entered the marina at 11:08 a.m.

Sarah entered at 11:19.

Robert arrived at 11:34.

All three left aboard Robert’s boat.

Only Daniel and Sarah returned.

Separately.

“What happened?”

“I don’t know exactly.”

“But you investigated.”

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel kill him?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“I believe Daniel caused Robert to go overboard.”

“And Sarah?”

“I believe she let him drown.”

My stomach turned.

“Why?”

“Money.”

Of course.

Everything circled money.

Robert’s trust required my inheritance to transfer after his death.

Daniel believed he could control me.

Sarah believed Daniel would share access.

But Robert had added protections.

Daniel couldn’t simply take the money.

That explained the next stage.

My death.

“If Sarah helped him, why are they enemies now?”

“Because Daniel cut her out.”

Jonathan said that after Robert died, Daniel discovered the trust restrictions and blamed Sarah for misleading him.

Their alliance collapsed.

Sarah threatened to expose the killing.

Daniel threatened to expose her blackmail network.

They reached a cold war.

Mercer House continued.

Both profited.

Both gathered evidence against the other.

Until my brakes failed.

“What changed then?”

“Sarah didn’t approve.”

I stared.

“She helped kill Robert but objected to killing me?”

“You were family.”

“That didn’t matter when she handed me to Daniel.”

Jonathan shook his head.

“You were supposed to be leverage. Not a victim.”

I laughed bitterly.

“That’s comforting.”

“It shouldn’t be.”

Good.

At least he knew.

Marcus asked, “Evidence of the boat incident?”

Jonathan removed a small memory card.

“Robert installed a dash camera on the cabin after suspicious damage to the boat.”

My heart pounded.

“Video?”

“Partial.”

The camera faced backward across the deck.

Audio survived better than the image.

We watched.

Robert’s voice.

Daniel’s.

Sarah’s.

Argument.

Robert accused Daniel of using me.

Daniel demanded information about the trust.

Sarah shouted that Robert had cheated her.

Then wind.

Movement.

Robert yelled.

A crash.

Water.

His voice from outside the boat.

“Sarah!”

Daniel shouted something unclear.

Robert screamed:

“Help me!”

Then Sarah’s voice.

Perfectly clear.

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

Water.

Robert pleading.

Then Daniel:

“Pull him up.”

Sarah answered:

“Not until he tells me where the documents are.”

My uncle was drowning while they negotiated.

The recording ended before either returned.

I walked out of the room.

Marcus followed.

I made it to the restroom before vomiting.

Afterward, I sat on the floor because standing felt impossible.

Marcus waited outside.

He did not knock.

He did not tell me to be strong.

Eventually I opened the door.

“I’m okay.”

“No, you’re not.”

Fair.

“But I will be.”

He nodded.

That mattered more.

Back inside, Jonathan had more.

Robert survived in the water for at least eleven minutes.

A nearby fisherman heard shouting but arrived too late.

Daniel and Sarah claimed they had never been aboard.

The marina camera files disappeared before police reviewed them.

Frank Nolan, still an officer then, had handled evidence transfer.

The network again.

“How many people knew?”

“Enough,” Jonathan said.

“Why didn’t you go public?”

“I tried.”

“What happened?”

“My daughter was fourteen.”

He looked ashamed.

“They sent photographs of her walking to school.”

I understood.

That was Daniel’s real weapon.

Not strength.

Not money.

Fear.

He made people choose between justice and someone they loved.

Most people chose love.

Then lived with the shame.

I no longer judged them as easily.

Jonathan handed me a final envelope.

“Robert wrote this for you the morning he died.”

Another letter.

Shorter.

Claire, if I have been too hard on you, forgive me. I mistook distance for independence. I should have fought harder to reach you. Whatever Daniel has told you, you are not weak. Being deceived is not weakness. Trusting someone is not weakness. The shame belongs to the person who abuses trust, not the person who offered it.

I cried.

Quietly.

For the uncle I had lost.

For the years Daniel stole.

For the version of myself I had blamed.

That afternoon, prosecutors arrested Judge Bennett.

Bribery.

Conspiracy.

Obstruction.

News helicopters surrounded the courthouse.

Mercer House removed Daniel’s name from its website.

Too late.

Thomas Greene was detained trying to cross into Canada.

Frank Nolan signed a cooperation agreement.

Evelyn provided account passwords.

The network was collapsing.

Only Sarah remained.

Then Daniel asked to speak with me.

Absolutely not, Marcus said.

Then Daniel’s attorney delivered the message.

Sarah will kill Helen next. I can prove it.

My mother.

I hated that Daniel knew exactly which fear to use.

“Could he be lying?”

Marcus answered:

“Yes.”

“Could he be telling the truth?”

“Yes.”

I agreed to listen under strict conditions.

No physical meeting.

Recorded video.

Attorneys present.

Daniel appeared on a screen from detention.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked ordinary.

No tailored blazer.

No stage lighting.

No audience.

Just a man in jail clothing with tired eyes.

He smiled when he saw me.

“Claire.”

I felt nothing.

That surprised me.

“You said Sarah will hurt my mother.”

“She will.”

“Proof.”

“You always were impatient.”

I almost laughed.

He still wanted control.

“Goodbye, Daniel.”

“Wait.”

For the first time, panic crossed his face.

“I have a recording.”

“Of?”

“Sarah threatening Helen.”

“When?”

“Last year.”

“Why?”

“Your mother knows where Sarah hid money.”

“What money?”

“Twenty-seven million dollars.”

Blackmail proceeds.

Sarah’s emergency fund.

“Where is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why threaten her?”

“Because Helen helped Robert hide it.”

The family secrets never ended.

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“Claire, listen to me. You think Sarah is helping you because she cares.”

“She helped you target me.”

His face twitched.

“So you know.”

“Yes.”

“You don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me.”

“Sarah chose you.”

“What?”

“I wanted Robert’s money. Sarah wanted revenge.”

“Against who?”

“Your mother.”

I stared.

“Why?”

Daniel smiled slightly.

“Because Helen was the reason Robert cut Sarah out of the family.”

Another old wound.

Another motive.

“She wanted you trapped with me because she knew it would destroy Helen.”

The cruelty of that possibility stunned me.

“You’re lying.”

“Probably about many things.”

Daniel leaned back.

“But not that.”

Then he said something that made Marcus sit forward.

“Sarah has a house in West Virginia. Under the name Susan White.”

Sarah Whitcomb.

Susan White.

S.W.

“What’s the address?”

Daniel gave it.

Marcus sent officers immediately.

The house was empty.

But inside they found surveillance photographs.

My mother.

Me.

Robert.

Daniel.

Allison.

Dozens of people.

And in a basement safe, investigators found passports, cash, and records worth millions.

They also found a handwritten list.

At the top:

THINGS DANIEL TOOK FROM ME.

At the bottom:

FINAL DEBT: CLAIRE.

Beside my name was tomorrow’s date.

May you like

And an address.

My mother’s house.
