Chapter 4: The Corporate Wolves Arrive

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the corporate headquarters of the Hale Group was under siege. The public scandal had triggered an emergency board meeting, and the high-backed leather chairs of the 50th-floor boardroom were filled with anxious, stone-faced executives.

Victoria sat at the head of the long marble table, her face flawlessly made up to hide the fact that she hadn't slept a single second. Lily sat in a small chair right beside her, an anomaly in the world of high finance, her presence a silent, living accusation against everyone in the room.

"The metrics are disastrous, Victoria," the senior board member, Richard Sterling, said, slamming a digital tablet onto the table. "Our stock valuation has plummeted by twelve percent since the opening bell. The activist investors are demanding your immediate resignation as CEO. They are calling this the 'Lobby Abuse Scandal,' and it’s spreading across every digital platform like wildfire."

"My personal life does not affect my capability to run this firm, Richard," Victoria said coldly, trying to project the iron authority that had defined her career.

"It does when the child in question holds the keys to half the company’s voting shares," a sharp voice interrupted from the back of the room.

The double doors swung open, and Eleanor Sterling—Richard’s wife and a woman who had spent a decade trying to execute a hostile takeover of the Hale Group—walked in. She was accompanied by a team of high-priced corporate lawyers and a man dressed in a white clinical coat.

"What is the meaning of this, Eleanor?" Victoria stood up, her jaw tightening.

"We are protecting the shareholders, Victoria," Eleanor said, a vicious, triumphant smile spreading across her face. "Given the sudden appearance of this... child, and the massive financial implications regarding the late patriarch’s will, the board has authorized an immediate, independent forensic and psychological evaluation. We have reason to believe this child is an impostor, hired by rival firms to destabilize our market value."

The clinical doctor stepped toward Lily, pulling a medical swab from his kit. "We require a rapid DNA sample from the minor to verify her biological claim to the Hale lineage."

Lily whimpered, shrinking back into her chair, her tiny fingers reaching out to grab the edge of Victoria’s tailored blazer. "Aunt Victoria... please. Don't let them touch me. I want to go home."

Victoria looked down at the little girl. For the first time in her life, she didn't see a financial threat or a corporate variable. She saw her sister Elizabeth’s eyes—the same eyes that had looked at her with love and protection when they were children, before the poison of their father’s wealth had driven them apart.

"Get away from her," Victoria said, her voice dropping into a deadly, vibrating calm that made the doctor freeze in his tracks.

"Victoria, don't be foolish," Richard warned. "If you refuse the test, the board will vote to suspend your executive powers by noon."

"Then suspend them," Victoria roared, stepping in front of Lily, her body forming a physical shield between her niece and the corporate wolves. "This child is my niece. She is a Hale. And I will burn this entire building to the ground before I let you use her as a pawn in your disgusting games. The meeting is adjourned."
