Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden Behind a Mother's Smile

The nursery fell into complete silence.

Meredith's phone slipped from her trembling fingers and landed on the polished hardwood floor with a dull thud.

No one moved.

Wyatt's sharp eyes shifted from his wife's pale face to the glowing screen.

The message was still visible.

If Wyatt discovers the truth about Jonah, we're both finished.

His heartbeat slowed instead of quickening.

Years of negotiating billion-dollar deals had taught him something important.

The most dangerous moments were never the loud ones.

They were the quiet ones.

"What truth?" Wyatt asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Meredith quickly bent down, snatched up her phone, and forced a smile.

"It's nothing."

Wyatt stared at her.

"Then show me."

"It was spam."

"Show me."

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

"No."

That single word answered more questions than any explanation could.

Across the room, Clara remained frozen, gently rocking Jonah against her shoulder.

The baby's cries had softened into weak whimpers, but his tiny body still felt frighteningly hot.

Clara carefully touched his forehead again.

"Mr. Calloway..."

Wyatt looked toward her.

"He really needs to go to the hospital."

Meredith spun around.

"He is not going anywhere."

Wyatt frowned.

"The pediatrician already examined him this morning," Meredith said quickly. "It's just a minor fever."

Clara swallowed.

"That isn't what Dr. Reynolds said."

Meredith's eyes flashed.

"Enough."

Clara hesitated.

Then she spoke anyway.

"The doctor wanted Jonah admitted for observation."

Wyatt slowly turned back toward his wife.

"Is that true?"

Meredith folded her arms.

"They always exaggerate."

"You ignored medical advice?"

"I made a decision as his mother."

Wyatt took one step closer.

"Did you?"

For the first time in years, Meredith took a step backward.

Twenty minutes later...

Jonah was admitted to Seattle Children's Hospital.

Doctors rushed him into a private examination room while nurses checked his temperature and oxygen levels.

Wyatt stood beside the hospital bed, refusing to leave his son's side.

Clara waited quietly near the doorway.

Meredith paced the hallway.

Every few minutes she checked her phone.

Every few minutes she grew more anxious.

Finally, Wyatt noticed.

"Who keeps texting you?"

"No one."

"Give me the phone."

"You don't trust me?"

"I didn't say that."

"You don't have to."

She laughed bitterly.

"Ever since he was born, you've looked at me differently."

Wyatt didn't answer.

Because it was true.

Before Jonah's birth, Meredith had been ambitious, confident, compassionate.

Afterward...

She barely touched her son.

She avoided feeding him.

She refused to comfort him.

Whenever cameras appeared, she became the perfect mother.

When the cameras disappeared...

So did she.

The nursery incident replayed endlessly inside Wyatt's mind.

Especially one sentence.

Someone has to protect him.

Protect him from what?

Or...

Protect him from whom?

The pediatrician emerged forty minutes later.

His expression was serious.

"Mr. Calloway?"

Wyatt stood immediately.

"How is my son?"

"The fever is under control now."

Wyatt exhaled.

"But..."

The doctor looked toward Meredith.

"There are other concerns."

Meredith stiffened.

"What concerns?"

The doctor hesitated.

"I've noticed this during Jonah's last three appointments."

Wyatt frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He appears to have missed several scheduled doses of medication."

Clara quietly lowered her eyes.

The doctor continued.

"The prescription bottle should have been nearly empty."

"It wasn't."

Wyatt slowly turned toward Meredith.

She looked away.

"The medicine..." she whispered.

"...made him sleepy."

The doctor's face hardened.

"It was prescribed because he had a serious infection."

"I didn't think he needed it."

"You are not qualified to make that decision."

Silence swallowed the hallway.

Finally Wyatt asked,

"Doctor..."

"If Clara hadn't called me today..."

The physician paused before answering.

"...your son might have developed complications that could have become life-threatening."

The words struck Wyatt harder than any business loss ever could.

Life-threatening.

He looked toward Clara.

She hadn't saved his schedule.

She hadn't saved his reputation.

She had saved his son.

Late that evening...

Wyatt drove home alone.

Meredith insisted on staying at the hospital.

Clara volunteered to remain with Jonah overnight.

Wyatt agreed without hesitation.

For reasons he couldn't fully explain...

He trusted Clara.

Completely.

The mansion felt colder than ever.

He wandered through room after room until he entered his home office.

There, an old family photograph rested on the bookshelf.

It had been taken six years earlier.

Before success had consumed everything.

Before fame.

Before endless interviews.

Before Jonah.

Meredith had been smiling.

A real smile.

Not the practiced one she now wore for photographers.

"What happened to us?" Wyatt whispered.

Then something caught his attention.

A small envelope rested beneath the office door.

He was certain it hadn't been there that morning.

There was no stamp.

No address.

Only three handwritten words.

For Wyatt Only.

His pulse quickened.

Inside was a flash drive.

Nothing else.

No note.

No explanation.

He walked to his computer.

For several seconds he simply stared at the tiny device.

Every instinct told him not to insert it.

But curiosity won.

The screen flickered.

One video file appeared.

No title.

No date.

He clicked play.

Static.

Then security camera footage.

The timestamp read:

Three weeks ago.

The nursery.

Empty.

Moments later, Clara entered carrying Jonah.

She gently laid him inside the crib before leaving.

Nothing unusual.

Then...

Thirty seconds later...

Meredith walked into the room.

She looked around carefully.

Making sure no one was watching.

Wyatt leaned closer to the screen.

Meredith reached into her purse.

She removed Jonah's bottle.

Then...

She poured its contents into the sink.

Every drop of medicine.

After that, she replaced it with plain water.

Wyatt stopped breathing.

"No..."

His own voice sounded distant.

On the recording, Jonah began crying.

Meredith didn't pick him up.

Instead, she stood beside the crib.

Looking down.

Expressionless.

Then she whispered words the hidden microphone barely captured.

"I wish you'd never been born."

Wyatt's hand shook violently.

The video ended.

The office became terrifyingly quiet.

His wife...

The woman he'd loved for twelve years...

Had deliberately thrown away their baby's medicine.

And someone inside the mansion had secretly recorded it.

Before Wyatt could gather his thoughts, his phone rang.

It was Clara.

He answered immediately.

"Is Jonah alright?"

Her breathing was uneven.

"Mr. Calloway..."

"What happened?"

"You need to come to the hospital."

"Why?"

There was a pause.

Then Clara whispered,

"Mrs. Calloway just tried to take Jonah out of the hospital..."

"...against the doctor's orders."
