Chapter 4: The Woman Buried by the Truth

The rain poured relentlessly over the hospital parking lot.

Meredith sat frozen behind the steering wheel, her hands gripping it so tightly her knuckles had turned white.

The detective stepped closer.

"Mrs. Meredith Calloway, turn off the engine."

She didn't move.

Instead, she whispered almost to herself,

"Olivia... is dead?"

The detective exchanged a brief glance with his partner.

"You've been running from this for five years."

"I didn't kill her."

"You can explain that downtown."

Finally, Meredith switched off the engine.

Within seconds, officers surrounded the car.

One carefully lifted Jonah from the back seat and handed him to Clara, who immediately wrapped the frightened baby against her chest.

Jonah stopped crying almost instantly.

Wyatt watched the scene in stunned silence.

His marriage had collapsed in less than twenty-four hours.

Yet every answer only created ten more questions.

Five Years Earlier...

The detective led Wyatt into a quiet conference room inside the hospital.

"My name is Detective Mason Brooks."

He placed a thick case file onto the table.

"You deserve to know why your wife was arrested."

Wyatt sat down without saying a word.

Brooks opened the folder.

"Do you remember a woman named Olivia Bennett?"

Wyatt frowned.

"No."

"She worked for the Calloway Foundation."

The name triggered a distant memory.

A young financial analyst.

Quiet.

Brilliant.

She had resigned shortly before Wyatt's company went public.

"I met her once or twice."

"Did your wife know her?"

"Yes."

Brooks nodded slowly.

"They knew each other much better than you realized."

He slid several photographs across the table.

One showed Meredith and Olivia leaving a downtown café together.

Another captured them arguing outside an apartment building.

The final picture made Wyatt's blood run cold.

Meredith was standing beside Olivia...

Who was visibly pregnant.

Wyatt stared at the image.

"I don't understand."

Brooks folded his hands.

"Neither did we."

"Until last month."

Five years earlier...

Olivia Bennett had disappeared.

Police believed she had left Seattle voluntarily.

There were no signs of violence.

No ransom demands.

No body.

The case eventually went cold.

Then, only three weeks ago...

Construction workers renovating an abandoned lakeside cabin discovered human remains beneath the basement floor.

Dental records confirmed the victim's identity.

Olivia Bennett.

Wyatt struggled to breathe.

"My wife..."

"We're not saying she murdered Olivia."

"But?"

"But several pieces of evidence connect Meredith to the victim shortly before her disappearance."

Brooks leaned forward.

"And now we've discovered something even more disturbing."

"What?"

He opened another folder.

Inside were copies of bank transfers.

Anonymous payments.

Hidden shell companies.

Medical records.

Wyatt stared in disbelief.

Every transaction involved one name.

Meredith Calloway.

Meanwhile...

Clara remained beside Jonah's hospital bed.

The baby finally slept peacefully.

A nurse quietly entered the room.

"Miss Ellis?"

"Yes?"

"I just wanted to say..."

The nurse smiled warmly.

"I've never seen someone love a child the way you love him."

Clara looked down at Jonah.

"I do love him."

The words escaped before she could stop them.

Not as a mother.

Not because he belonged to her.

Simply because every child deserved someone willing to protect them.

Even if it cost everything.

Hours later...

Henry, the elderly gardener, arrived at the hospital.

His gray hair was soaked from the rain.

He looked exhausted.

"I'm sorry."

Clara stood.

"For what?"

"I should've told Mr. Calloway months ago."

"You were scared."

"I was."

Henry lowered his voice.

"But that's not why I came."

He reached into his jacket.

From an inside pocket, he removed an old leather notebook.

"I found this hidden in the greenhouse."

Clara frowned.

"What is it?"

"It belonged to Olivia Bennett."

Wyatt entered the room just as Henry handed him the notebook.

"What's this?"

Henry swallowed.

"The truth."

Wyatt slowly opened it.

Most pages contained ordinary diary entries.

Work schedules.

Personal thoughts.

Shopping lists.

Then...

Near the end...

The handwriting changed.

It became rushed.

Uneven.

Fear filled every sentence.

Meredith knows.

She found the DNA results.

Wyatt's heartbeat quickened.

DNA?

He turned another page.

She said the baby would ruin everything.

Another page.

If anything happens to me... tell Wyatt the truth.

Wyatt froze.

The room became painfully quiet.

One final folded document slipped from between the pages.

It was a laboratory report.

Across the top...

In bold letters...

PATERNITY TEST

Wyatt unfolded the last page.

Then the world stopped.

Probability of paternity:

99.99%

Father:

Wyatt Alexander Calloway

Mother:

Olivia Bennett

His vision blurred.

"No..."

The word barely escaped his lips.

"It can't be."

He remembered Olivia.

A company retreat six years ago.

Too much champagne.

One terrible mistake he had buried beneath guilt and work.

He had confessed everything to Meredith.

She claimed she had forgiven him.

She had even encouraged Olivia's quiet resignation from the foundation.

Wyatt believed the matter had ended there.

He never knew Olivia had been pregnant.

He never knew she had tried to contact him.

Most importantly...

He never knew...

He had another child.

The room spun.

"If this report is real..."

Henry nodded sadly.

"It is."

Wyatt looked toward Detective Brooks.

"What happened to the baby?"

Brooks remained silent.

Finally he answered.

"That's the question we've been trying to solve."

At that exact moment...

Across town...

Inside the county jail...

Meredith sat alone inside an interrogation room.

The detective placed Olivia's diary on the table.

"You've lied long enough."

Meredith stared at the notebook.

Tears slowly filled her eyes.

"I never wanted anyone to die."

"What happened?"

She closed her eyes.

"It started with one lie."

"Tell me."

Meredith whispered,

"When Olivia gave birth..."

"...the baby never left the hospital."

The detective frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Meredith finally looked up.

Her voice cracked.

"I took him."

The detective's face hardened.

"You kidnapped Olivia's baby?"

Meredith nodded through tears.

"I told everyone my own son had survived..."

"...but the child I brought home..."

"...was Olivia's."

Miles away...

At the hospital...

Wyatt's phone rang.

Detective Brooks answered before Wyatt could.

His expression changed instantly.

Then he slowly lowered the phone.

"What is it?" Wyatt asked.

Brooks looked directly at him.

"The DNA lab just confirmed something."

He paused.

"The baby you've been raising as Jonah..."

"...isn't Meredith's biological child."

Wyatt felt the air leave his lungs.

"He is..."

Brooks nodded.

"...Olivia Bennett's son."

Wyatt turned slowly toward the nursery window.

Inside, Clara gently rocked Jonah to sleep.

The tiny boy smiled peacefully in his dreams.

Completely unaware...

May you like

That the truth about his identity had just changed every life around him forever.
