Chapter 2 - THE HOUSE WITH THE BLUE DOOR

Nathan discovered Noah was gone at 5:17 in the morning.

By 5:19, every gate surrounding the Whitaker estate was locked.

By 5:23, Carter had six men searching the grounds.

At 5:31, Nathan watched the security footage.

Elena appeared on the screen carrying Noah.

She wore jeans and a dark coat.

Noah's face rested against her shoulder.

A backpack hung from her arm.

Nathan watched her enter a small sedan parked beyond the service gate.

Then she disappeared.

“Again,” he said.

Carter replayed the footage.

Vanessa stood behind Nathan.

She wore a silk robe.

Her blond hair was loose.

“Oh my God.”

Nathan said nothing.

“Nathan, she took him.”

“Again.”

Carter replayed it.

Vanessa touched Nathan's shoulder.

He moved away.

Not deliberately.

Instinctively.

“She kidnapped Noah,” Vanessa whispered.

Nathan stared at the screen.

Elena had worked for his family for six years.

Grace hired her.

That mattered.

He remembered the interview.

Grace had been seven months pregnant.

She came into his office laughing because Elena had told her the mansion was beautiful but the nursery curtains looked like something chosen by a depressed grandmother.

Grace hired her immediately.

After Grace died, Elena stayed.

She stayed through Noah's nightmares.

Through Nathan's absences.

Through everything.

“She wouldn't hurt him,” Nathan said.

Vanessa stared.

“She took your child.”

“Why?”

“What?”

“Why would Elena kidnap Noah?”

“Money.”

“She has access to accounts with more money than she could spend.”

“Jealousy.”

Nathan looked at her.

Vanessa hesitated.

“She's obsessed with him.”

“With Noah?”

“With this family.”

Something in her tone bothered him.

Nathan turned to Carter.

“Track her phone.”

“Already trying.”

“Police?”

Carter hesitated.

Nathan understood.

Calling police meant headlines.

BILLIONAIRE'S SON KIDNAPPED BY HOUSEKEEPER.

Every enemy Nathan had would know Noah was vulnerable.

“Not yet.”

Vanessa's mouth opened.

“Nathan—”

“Not yet.”

He walked from the security room.

Vanessa followed.

“She could be anywhere.”

“No.”

Nathan stopped.

“Elena doesn't have anywhere.”

He knew almost nothing about her personal life.

The realization felt shameful.

Six years.

She had lived in his home five days a week.

Raised his child.

And he did not know where she spent Sundays.

Nathan pulled out his phone.

“Find her employment records.”

Carter nodded.

Vanessa touched Nathan's arm.

“You need to consider that she may be unstable.”

He looked down at her hand.

“Why?”

“Excuse me?”

“You keep telling me what Elena is.”

Vanessa smiled nervously.

“I'm trying to help.”

“Then tell me something factual.”

Her hand dropped.

Nathan walked away.

For the first time since the pool accident, Vanessa Pierce looked afraid.

Elena's house had a blue door.

Noah loved it immediately.

“It's tiny.”

Elena almost laughed.

“Thank you.”

“No. Tiny is good.”

“Is it?”

“You can see all the walls.”

The words broke something inside her.

The Whitaker mansion had twenty-three rooms.

Noah was afraid of spaces he could not see.

Elena unlocked the door.

Her house sat on a quiet street forty minutes from Greenwich.

Two bedrooms.

One bathroom.

A kitchen with old yellow cabinets.

She had purchased it with her husband, Mateo, nine years earlier.

Before the diagnosis.

Before hospital bills.

Before cancer took him in fourteen months and left Elena with a house full of memories and a mortgage she could barely carry.

Noah had never visited.

Nathan had never asked where she lived.

Elena turned on the lights.

Noah walked slowly through the living room.

He touched the old couch.

Looked at family photographs.

Stopped at Mateo's picture.

“Who's that?”

“My husband.”

“Where is he?”

“He died.”

Noah looked at her.

“Like Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Do you miss him?”

“Every day.”

Noah considered that.

“Daddy doesn't talk about Mommy.”

“I know.”

“Maybe talking hurts.”

“Yes.”

“Does not talking hurt too?”

Elena swallowed.

“Yes.”

Noah nodded.

Children understood grief in ways adults spent years trying to avoid.

Elena made hot chocolate.

Noah sat at the kitchen table.

He looked safer already.

That terrified her.

Her phone remained turned off.

She had removed the battery after receiving the photograph.

But she knew Nathan would find her.

She wanted him to.

Eventually.

After she understood who she could trust.

Someone knocked.

Elena froze.

Noah dropped his spoon.

Three knocks.

Slow.

Elena reached for the kitchen knife.

“Go to the bedroom.”

Noah stared.

“Now.”

He ran.

Elena approached the door.

“Who is it?”

“Elena.”

Nathan.

Her knees nearly collapsed.

She opened the door.

Nathan Whitaker stood on her porch.

No security.

No coat.

His face looked like he had aged ten years since the night before.

“Where is my son?”

Elena stepped outside.

She closed the door behind her.

“He's safe.”

Nathan grabbed her arm.

“Where is Noah?”

Elena flinched.

Nathan immediately released her.

His anger remained.

“You carried my child out of my house in the middle of the night.”

“Someone threatened him.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why didn't you come to me?”

“Because someone photographed me inside his bedroom.”

Nathan stopped.

Elena removed her phone.

She showed him the messages.

Nathan read them.

His face emptied.

That was worse than anger.

“Who has seen these?”

“Nobody.”

“You should have told me.”

“Your security failed.”

“Carter—”

“Your security cameras watched me leave with Noah and nobody stopped me.”

Nathan said nothing.

“If I wanted to hurt him, he's already dead.”

The sentence was cruel.

Necessary.

Nathan looked toward the house.

“Let me see him.”

Elena opened the door.

Noah appeared before she could call him.

“Daddy!”

Nathan dropped to his knees.

Noah ran into him.

Nathan held his son so tightly Noah squeaked.

“Daddy. Too tight.”

Nathan loosened his arms.

“Sorry.”

“Are you mad?”

Nathan looked at Elena.

“Yes.”

Noah's face fell.

“Not at you.”

“Are you mad at Elena?”

Nathan hesitated.

Noah stepped between them.

“She saved me.”

“I know.”

“Again.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Again.

The word seemed to strike him.

Noah took his father's hand.

“Can we stay?”

“At Elena's?”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked around.

At the old couch.

The yellow kitchen.

The cheap curtains.

Then at his son.

“Why?”

Noah answered simply.

“Because I can see all the walls.”

Nathan stared at him.

Elena watched the billionaire finally understand how unsafe his mansion felt to his own child.

Nathan stood.

“We stay.”

Elena blinked.

“What?”

“For tonight.”

“You cannot stay here.”

“Why?”

“My couch is terrible.”

“I've survived hostile acquisitions.”

“You haven't slept on that couch.”

For the first time, Nathan almost smiled.

Then a vehicle slowed outside.

The smile disappeared.

A black SUV.

Nathan pulled Noah behind him.

The SUV stopped.

Elena's heart hammered.

The rear window lowered.

Vanessa sat inside.

She looked directly at Elena.

Then at Noah.

And smiled.

The SUV drove away.

Nathan stood completely still.

“You didn't tell her where we were?”

Elena whispered.

“No.”

“Did Carter?”

“No.”

They looked at each other.

Nathan reached for his phone.

Before he could call anyone, Noah spoke.

“That's the lady.”

Nathan turned.

“What?”

Noah pointed toward the disappearing SUV.

“The lady at the pool.”

Elena stopped breathing.

May you like

Noah's voice became smaller.

“She wore Vanessa's perfume.”
