Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN GRACE CHOSE

The X-ray showed a metal capsule.

Dr. Miriam Shaw stared at the screen.

Nathan stood beside her.

Elena sat on the examination table.

Noah slept in the next room under armed guard.

“How long has that been inside her?” Nathan asked.

Miriam adjusted the image.

“Years.”

“Can you remove it?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Now.”

Elena looked at Nathan.

“No.”

Nathan frowned.

“No?”

“If Grace put it there, people killed her for it.”

“Exactly.”

“So removing it puts everyone in this building at risk.”

Nathan stared.

Elena continued.

“We need to understand why she chose me.”

Miriam cleared her throat.

Both looked at her.

“I may know.”

Nathan's face hardened.

Miriam removed her glasses.

“Grace came to me before she died.”

Nathan whispered, “Everyone knew except me.”

Miriam ignored the bitterness.

“She was terrified.”

“Of my father?”

“Yes.”

Nathan looked away.

“Grace discovered Richard's research involved unauthorized genetic testing on children with rare neurological conditions.”

Elena felt sick.

“What happened to them?”

“Some died.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Miriam continued.

“Richard buried the records. Grace copied everything.”

“And put it inside Elena?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Miriam looked at Elena.

“Because you were invisible.”

Elena almost laughed.

A housekeeper.

Invisible.

Grace had understood rich families too.

“Grace knew Nathan's employees were watched,” Miriam said. “She needed someone outside the company.”

“But I hadn't worked for Nathan.”

“No.”

“Then why me?”

Miriam's eyes softened.

“Mateo.”

Elena froze.

“My husband?”

“He was one of my patients.”

Elena stared.

“Mateo knew Grace?”

“He helped her.”

The room disappeared.

Mateo.

Quiet Mateo.

The man who repaired watches and sang terribly while cooking.

“He never told me.”

“He was protecting you.”

Elena stood.

“Stop saying that.”

Miriam blinked.

“Everyone keeps saying they lied to protect me.”

Her voice shook.

“Mateo lied. Grace lied. You lied.”

“Elena—”

“No.”

She touched the scar.

“Someone cut me open and put evidence inside my body without my consent.”

Nathan stepped closer.

She moved away.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

Elena looked at Miriam.

“Remove it.”

“Now?”

“Now.”

The capsule contained a memory card.

Nathan watched the files load.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Children.

Thirty-seven children.

Nine deaths.

Richard Whitaker's signature appeared on authorization documents.

Nathan turned away.

His father had built hospitals.

Scholarships.

Research centers.

His name appeared on university buildings.

And beneath all of it, children had died.

Elena sat beside him.

“There's more.”

A video file.

GRACE_FINAL.

Nathan pressed play.

Grace appeared.

Alive.

Nathan stopped breathing.

She sat inside a car.

Rain covered the windows.

“If Nathan is watching this, I am sorry.”

His knees weakened.

Elena touched his arm.

Grace continued.

“Your father knows I found the records. Vanessa Pierce works for him. So does Simon Vale.”

Nathan stared.

“I don't know who else I can trust.”

Grace looked over her shoulder.

“Noah is safe tonight. Elena Cruz has the evidence.”

Elena covered her mouth.

“I chose Elena because Mateo trusted her with his heart. He told me she would protect a child even if the whole world told her to look away.”

Elena began crying.

Grace smiled sadly.

“He was right.”

The video flickered.

“Nathan, please listen. If I die, do not become your father. Do not turn grief into distance. Noah needs you.”

Nathan lowered his head.

Grace's final words came softly.

“And if Elena is there, trust her.”

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Noah appeared in the doorway.

“Was that Mommy?”

Nathan turned.

Noah stared at the dark screen.

Nathan opened his arms.

This time, Noah ran to him.

Nathan held his son.

“Yes.”

“Can I see her again?”

Nathan looked at Elena.

She nodded.

He replayed the video.

They watched Grace together.

Again.

And again.

On the fourth viewing, Elena noticed something.

“Stop.”

Nathan paused.

“What?”

“The mirror.”

Grace's rearview mirror showed a reflection.

A man in the back seat.

Nathan enlarged the image.

Carter.

Noah whispered, “Mr. Carter.”

May you like

Nathan stood.

At that exact moment, every light in the clinic went out.
