Chapter 5 - MY MOTHER WAS ALIVEMy mother survived.

The bullet passed through her shoulder.
Victor's men found the shooter dead two blocks away.
Poison capsule.
Haven did not leave witnesses.
Ava woke the next morning.
I sat beside her.
For hours, neither of us knew what to say.
How do you compress twenty-two stolen years into a conversation?
You don't.
You begin with something small.
“Dad made pancakes badly.”
She laughed and cried at the same time.
“He always burned the edges.”
That was how I knew.
Not DNA.
Not documents.
Burned pancakes.
My mother explained Haven.
She and Alexander Blackwood had worked together to expose it.
Daniel joined later.
When Alexander tried to leave, Haven killed Victor's mother.
Alexander became afraid.
He paid them again.
My mother refused.
Celeste took her.
For twenty-two years, Ava had been moved between facilities.
She escaped six months ago.
“Why didn't you find me?”
“I tried.”
Her face broke.
“Celeste was already beside you.”
The nanny job.
The mansion.
Everything had been engineered.
“But why me?”
Ava looked at Victor.
“Because Annalise is the key.”
The Vale Key was not an object.
It was a biometric encryption protocol Daniel created.
My DNA unlocked Haven's master archive.
Victor understood first.
“They need her alive.”
“Yes.”
Ava looked at me.
“Until the archive opens.”
Then they could kill me.
Victor's expression became cold.
“They won't touch her.”
My mother studied him.
“You sound like your father.”
Victor flinched.
Ava immediately regretted it.
But the damage was done.
Victor left.
I found him on the clinic roof.
“You can't protect everyone,” I said.
“I should have protected Ethan.”
“You didn't know.”
“I should have.”
“That isn't how evil works.”
He looked at me.
“How does it work?”
“It convinces good people they should have seen it sooner.”
The wind moved between us.
Victor said, “Are you calling me good?”
“Don't get excited.”
He almost smiled.
Almost.
Then Marcus called.
Celeste had taken Evelyn.
Victor's sister disappeared from the clinic parking garage.
One guard dead.
One unconscious.
A message waited on the windshield.
BRING THE KEY.
Victor shattered the phone against the wall.
This time, I touched his arm.
He looked at my hand.
“We'll get her back.”
He stared at me.
“You don't know that.”
“No.”
I tightened my grip.
“But I'm done letting Celeste decide what I believe.”
We opened the archive.
My blood unlocked it.
Thousands of files appeared.
Haven's entire network.
And a live video.
Evelyn tied to a chair.
Celeste stood behind her.
“Hello, Annalise.”
She smiled.
“Now let's discuss the baby.”
Victor went still.
Celeste leaned toward the camera.
“Ethan Blackwood was never supposed to die.”
She paused.
“He was supposed to disappear.”
Then she held up a document.
A custody transfer.
Signed by Victor.
Except Victor had never signed it.
May you like
Celeste smiled wider.
“Your son already belongs to Haven.”
