Chapter 7 - THE MAN AT THE HEAD OF THE TABLEThe archive named Haven's director.

Alexander Blackwood.

Victor's father.

The man had supposedly died eight years earlier.

He had not.

Alexander lived in Switzerland under another identity.

Victor said nothing for an hour.

Then he booked a flight.

I told him I was coming.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Annalise.”

“Victor.”

Marcus walked out.

We went to Switzerland.

Alexander received us in a mountain estate.

He looked like an older Victor.

That was the cruelest part.

He smiled at his son.

Victor punched him.

Alexander fell.

Then laughed.

“I deserved that.”

“You deserve worse.”

Alexander admitted everything.

He rebuilt Haven after trying to destroy it.

Fear changed him.

When his wife died, he decided control was safer than morality.

He watched Victor grow.

Manipulated his business.

Selected Serena.

Targeted Ethan.

Victor's face broke when Alexander said Ethan was “acceptable collateral.”

I stepped between them before Victor killed his father.

Alexander looked at me.

“Ava's daughter.”

“My name is Annalise.”

“Yes. Names matter to frightened people.”

I slapped him.

Victor almost smiled.

Alexander offered a deal.

The archive for Ethan's safety.

We refused.

Then alarms sounded.

Haven soldiers entered the estate.

Alexander had underestimated his own organization.

Haven no longer needed him.

We escaped through a tunnel.

Alexander was shot.

Victor could have left him.

He didn't.

He carried his father.

Later, Alexander asked why.

Victor said, “Because I refuse to become you.”

That sentence destroyed Alexander more effectively than any bullet.

Before dying, he gave us the location of Haven's central server.

Connecticut.

Twelve miles from Victor's mansion.

The enemy had always been home.
