Chapter 3: Shuttling Down Paradise

The walk from the upper cliff terrace to the resort’s private medical clinic took less than three minutes, but by the time I reached the glass doors, the island was already changing.
Suddenly, the brilliant, warm glow of the thousands of imported crystal lanterns lining the palm trees flickered once, twice, and then died completely. The booming bass of the live orchestra screeched to an abrupt halt as the main power grid to the cliff terrace was cut. A collective, panicked gasp from two hundred high-society guests echoed across the hills of Saint Barthélemy, followed by the distant shouting of my father and sister.
Inside the clinic, the lights remained perfectly bright, powered by the facility's independent backup generators.
"Ms. Blackthorne!" Dr. Aris, the chief medical officer of the resort, rushed out the moment he saw me walking in with Lily. His eyes widened when he noticed the blood on her lip and the unnatural angle of her left wrist. "What happened? Please, lay her on the primary examination table immediately."
"She was assaulted," I said, my voice deadly level as I laid Lily down. I stroked her matted hair, my heart aching as she whimpered. "A two-meter drop from the terrace, followed by a physical blow to the face from Richard Sterling. I want a full, comprehensive forensic medical report. Document every bruise, every scratch, and X-ray her wrist immediately. This data needs to be uploaded directly to our legal team's secure server in New York."
"Right away, ma'am," Dr. Aris said, his professional demeanor instantly locking in. He knew exactly who I was—not Claire the failure, but Claire Blackthorne, the absolute ruler of this island and the woman who funded his entire state-of-the-art facility.
As the nurses began to carefully treat Lily, the glass doors of the clinic burst open.
Ethan Cole, the groom, ran in. His expensive tuxedo jacket was missing, his white shirt wrinkled, and his face was slick with sweat. He looked frantic, his eyes darting around the high-tech clinic until they locked onto me.
"Claire! Thank God you're here!" Ethan panted, rushing toward me, completely oblivious to the injured child on the table. "Something insane is happening with the resort. The power just got cut to the entire reception. The catering staff is literally packing up the food and rolling away the champagne towers while people are still sitting there! The security team told us the event has been terminated due to a non-payment breach!"
I slowly turned around, crossing my arms, looking at the man my sister had bragged about marrying. "A non-payment breach? That sounds serious, Ethan."
"It’s impossible!" Ethan cried, rubbing his face in panic. "I told your parents that my family handled the full wire transfer last week! But the resort manager just pulled me aside and said the anonymous corporate benefactor who backed the $2 million invoice just revoked the funding! Claire, you work in finance—can you call your firm? Can you bridge a temporary loan? Your father is losing his mind out there, threatening to sue everyone, and Vanessa is having a literal nervous breakdown in the dark!"
I took a slow step closer to Ethan, the shadow of the clinic lights catching the sharp angles of my face. "Why would I help you, Ethan?"
Ethan blinked, taken aback by my coldness. "What? Claire, we're about to be family! If this wedding gets canceled tonight, my family's reputation is done. The press is already outside the marina! If they find out the event was shut down because the bills bounced, my startup's valuation will tank to zero by tomorrow morning!"
"Your startup is already at zero, Ethan," I said softly, the words hitting him like a physical blow.
He froze, his face draining of all color. "How... how do you know that?"
"Did you really think Blackthorne Capital wouldn't perform a deep forensic audit before executing a $2 million anonymous wire?" I whispered, leaning in so the medical staff couldn't hear. "I know your startup collapsed six months ago. I know you forged your family's asset statements to trick my parents into thinking you were a billionaire. And I paid for this entire wedding because I thought it would make my sister happy."
Ethan’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "You... you are the anonymous benefactor? You paid for the wedding?"
"I did," I said, pointing a finger directly at the examination table where Lily was crying as the doctor set her wrist splint. "But your new wife just threw my daughter off a cliff, and my father just hit her. So now, Ethan, the bill is due. And I am shutting down your paradise."
Before Ethan could utter another word, two massive, armed resort security guards stepped into the clinic, flanking him.
"Mr. Cole," the lead guard said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth. "Your presence is no longer permitted in this facility. Your access privileges to the VIP sector have been permanently revoked. Please step outside immediately."
"Claire! Please! You can't do this to us!" Ethan screamed as the guards physically hoisted him by his arms, dragging him backward through the sliding glass doors into the pitch-black tropical night.
I turned back to Lily, taking her uninjured hand in mine. "The helicopter is fueled and ready on the private helipad, Dr. Aris?"
May you like
"Yes, Ms. Blackthorne," the doctor replied, handing me a digital tablet containing the completed X-ray and forensic files. "A clean hairline fracture to the left radius, along with severe facial contusions. The report is signed, sealed, and already transmitted to the New York District Attorney's special victims unit."
"Good," I said, gently lifting my brave little girl back into my arms. "Let's leave this trash where it belongs."
