Chapter 4: The Eviction from Utopia

The morning sun over Saint Barthélemy usually brought a soft, golden warmth that made the island look like a heaven on earth. But for the Sterling and Cole families, the morning of what was supposed to be Day 2 of the luxury wedding retreat felt like an absolute execution.

At 6:00 AM, the central air conditioning units to the ultra-luxury VIP villas were systematically shut down.

Vanessa awoke dazed, hungover, and dripping with sweat in the stifling, humid heat of her master suite. Her white dress, still covered in the dried, dark red wine stains from the night before, lay crumpled on the floor like a dead animal. She reached for the room service telephone to demand ice water, but the line was completely dead.

"Ethan!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking the silk sheets off her legs. "Ethan, wake up! Why is it so hot in here? Where are the servants?"

Ethan sat on the edge of the plush bed, his head buried in his hands. He hadn't slept a single second. "They're not coming, Vanessa."

"What do you mean they're not coming?" She slammed her foot down, marching toward the heavy oak door of the villa. "I am the bride! I am paying two hundred thousand dollars a night for this compound! I will have the manager fired by noon!"

She threw the door open, only to find four uniformed resort security officers standing on the porch. Next to them stood a line of hotel bellhops who were calmly but efficiently loading Vanessa’s expensive designer luggage, her custom gowns, and her cosmetic cases onto a flatbed motorized cart.

"What are you doing with my things?!" Vanessa roared, her hangover intensifying her rage. "Get your filthy hands off my Chanel bags!"

My mother and father, Eleanor and Richard, emerged from the adjacent villa, both dressed in wrinkled resort wear, looking disheveled and completely frantic.

"What is the meaning of this outrage?!" Richard boomed, his voice cracking as he tried to maintain his high-society authority. "I am Richard Sterling! I demand to speak with the owner of this resort chain immediately! We have an exclusive contract for this entire peninsula until Tuesday!"

The resort’s general manager, a tall, imposing French man named Jean-Luc, walked up the stone pathway, holding a sleek silver digital tablet. He didn't bow, he didn't apologize, and he didn't offer the customary complimentary champagne.

"Mr. and Mrs. Sterling, Mr. and Mrs. Cole," Jean-Luc said, his voice clipped and freezing. "As of 12:01 AM last night, your reservation contract was terminated due to a severe breach of our safety policies, specifically the physical assault of a minor guest on our premises. Furthermore, the corporate account that was guaranteeing the $2.1 million wedding ledger has been permanently closed."

"That's a lie!" Eleanor screamed, her manicured fingers clutching her throat. "The Cole family handled the wire! Ethan’s father is a venture capitalist!"

"Ethan’s father filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy three weeks ago, Mrs. Sterling," Jean-Luc replied smoothly, sliding his finger across the tablet screen. "The actual funding for this entire event came from an institutional holding company based in Delaware. That holding company has revoked all guarantees. As it stands right now, your family owes this resort an outstanding balance of two million, one hundred and forty-five thousand dollars."

Vanessa gasped, turning on Ethan like a wild animal. "Ethan? What is he talking about? Tell them he's lying! Tell them your family is rich!"

Ethan couldn't even look her in the eye. He just stared at the dirt pathway, his silence confirming everything.

"Since there is no valid credit card on file capable of holding a two-million-dollar authorization," Jean-Luc continued, completely ignoring the family's internal meltdown, "your belongings have been moved to the public ferry terminal at the main harbor. Your access cards are dead. You have exactly fifteen minutes to clear the private property boundaries before our security team physically escorts you off the premises for criminal trespassing."

"You can't do this to us!" Richard yelled, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple. "We have two hundred guests from the New York elite sitting in the main lobby right now! What are we supposed to tell them?!"

"Your guests have already been notified via automated messages that the wedding has been aborted due to financial insolvency on the part of the hosts," Jean-Luc said with a slight, brutal smile. "Many of them have already booked the morning commercial flights back to Miami. Good day, corporate debtors."

As Jean-Luc walked away, the security guards stepped forward, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts.

Vanessa looked around at the sweltering, humid paradise that had turned into her personal hell. Her guests were leaving, her billionaire husband was a fraud, her family was facing public disgrace, and she was being thrown off the island in a stained, torn wedding dress.

"This is Claire's fault!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking as she began to tear at her own hair in a fit of hysterical madness. "That miserable, jealous bitch did this! She brought her cursed, freak child to my wedding and ruined everything! Where is she?! Richard, find her! Make her pay for this!"

But the private helipad on the highest ridge of the island was already empty. The twin-engine Eurocopter carrying me and Lily was already thousands of feet above the Caribbean Sea, heading straight for a private medical transport jet bound for New York.

The battle on the island was over. The war in Manhattan was about to begin.
