Chapter 10 - Daniel Finally Falls

Daniel could have denied it.

That was what Victoria expected.

That was what Lauren needed.

That was what the Whitmore name demanded.

But as the gala hall erupted around him, Daniel looked at Emily standing beneath the stage lights and saw not an enemy, not a wife, not a woman he could charm back into usefulness.

He saw the person who had saved him again and again while he learned to resent her for making survival look effortless.

Victoria hissed, “Daniel. Say something.”

Lauren’s eyes begged him silently.

Emily said nothing.

That silence gave him more choice than he deserved.

He stepped forward.

“I knew about the asset inquiry,” Daniel said.

Victoria froze.

Lauren whispered, “Daniel, don’t.”

He continued.

“I didn’t know Emily controlled Rowan. But I knew she might have access to resources. I let people investigate her. I approved payments I didn’t fully understand because I wanted the company saved without admitting I had failed.”

Reporters pushed closer.

Victoria’s face became a mask of disbelief.

Daniel looked at Emily.

“I didn’t forge your signature.”

Emily held his gaze.

“But I created the room where someone thought they could.”

That was the first honest thing he had said in years.

It did not save him.

But it mattered.

Lauren moved toward the exit again. Thomas blocked her.

Marcus approached with two investigators.

Lauren laughed bitterly. “You people are making a mistake.”

Emily turned. “No, Lauren. I made my mistake twelve years ago. This is correction.”

Lauren’s composure cracked.

“You think you’re better than me because you inherited a bank?”

Emily walked closer.

“No. I think I’m different from you because I could have ruined this family years ago and chose not to.”

Lauren was escorted out for questioning after one of her consulting partners turned over evidence to protect himself.

Victoria tried to leave through the service corridor.

Anna, the young accountant, stood there with two federal agents.

The symbolism was almost too perfect.

By midnight, Daniel had resigned as CEO.

By morning, Victoria’s private accounts were frozen pending investigation.

By afternoon, the Whitmore Foundation canceled all upcoming events.

The society pages called it the fall of a dynasty.

Emily called it Tuesday.

But privately, when she returned to her apartment, she took off her shoes, sat on the floor, and cried.

Not because she regretted what she had done.

Because justice did not erase grief.

And losing a marriage still hurt, even when the marriage had become a lie.

At 2:17 a.m., there was a knock at her door.

Thomas checked the camera.

“It’s Daniel.”

Emily closed her eyes.

May you like

Then she stood.

“Let him in.”
