Chapter 3 – The Child Who Refused to Lie

The morning after Evelyn disappeared, Blackwood Manor no longer felt like a home.

It felt like a courtroom.

Police officers walked through the marble halls carrying evidence bags. Detectives photographed every hallway, every staircase, every fingerprint that could still be recovered before the hundreds of guests from the previous evening contaminated everything.

Outside the estate, television vans lined the front gate.

MISSING BRIDE HOURS BEFORE WEDDING.

BILLIONAIRE FAMILY UNDER INVESTIGATION.

DID THE BLACKWOODS HIDE SOMETHING?

Every news channel had a different theory.

None of them were correct.

Adrian Blackwood hadn't slept.

For nearly twenty-four hours he had searched every road, every airport, every marina, every hotel Evelyn could possibly have reached.

Nothing.

No passport use.

No credit card.

No phone activity.

She had simply vanished.

Or someone had made sure she would.

Inside his private study, Detective Sarah Donovan spread photographs across the enormous walnut desk.

"There are only three possibilities," she said calmly.

"She left voluntarily."

Adrian didn't respond.

"She was kidnapped."

Still nothing.

"Or someone inside this estate helped make her disappear."

That finally made him look up.

His blue eyes were bloodshot.

"You think someone in my family?"

"I think rich families lie just as well as poor ones."

Before Adrian could answer, someone knocked.

It was Hannah.

She looked exhausted.

Little Emma slept against her shoulder, wrapped in a tiny pink blanket.

The little girl's cheeks were stained with dried tears.

She hadn't stopped asking for Evelyn.

"I'm sorry," Hannah whispered.

"I know you're busy."

Adrian immediately stood.

"What is it?"

Hannah hesitated.

"I think Emma remembers something."

Sarah looked interested immediately.

"Children often remember details adults ignore."

Emma slowly opened sleepy eyes.

She looked around the office before reaching toward Adrian.

He took her gently.

She rested her tiny head against his shoulder.

Then she whispered,

"The shiny lady."

Adrian frowned.

"What shiny lady?"

Emma pointed toward the window.

"The sparkly dress."

Sarah quickly grabbed her notebook.

"What about the sparkly dress?"

Emma thought carefully.

Children never rushed memories.

Adults did.

"Pretty lady..."

She paused.

"...was angry."

"Which pretty lady?"

Emma looked confused.

"There were two."

Adrian exchanged a glance with Hannah.

Two?

"The bride?"

Emma nodded.

"And another one."

"What did the other lady look like?"

Emma pointed toward the diamond bracelet on Sarah's wrist.

"Sparkly."

Sarah asked,

"Blonde?"

Emma nodded enthusiastically.

"Yes!"

Adrian felt something tighten inside his chest.

Victoria.

Emma continued.

"They were shouting."

Hannah frowned.

"Where?"

"The flower room."

Everyone looked at each other.

The conservatory.

Sarah asked softly,

"What happened next?"

Emma squeezed Adrian's tie.

"The sparkly lady pushed the flowers."

"What flowers?"

"The big white flowers."

Adrian remembered.

The enormous wedding arch had been decorated inside the conservatory while florists finished arrangements.

Emma continued,

"Pretty bride cried."

Silence.

Sarah asked,

"Did anyone else come?"

Emma nodded.

"The scary man."

Adrian froze.

"What scary man?"

"The man with the black coat."

Sarah immediately turned another page.

"What did he do?"

Emma whispered,

"He took Pretty Bride away."

Nobody spoke.

Children imagined things.

But they almost never invented sequences.

Sarah leaned closer.

"Did the bride want to go?"

Emma shook her head violently.

"No."

"What did she say?"

Emma's lower lip trembled.

"She said..."

The little girl tried hard to remember.

"...tell Adrian..."

She couldn't remember the rest.

Instead she burst into tears.

Adrian held her tightly.

"It's okay."

"It's okay."

But inside, nothing was okay anymore.

Someone hadn't simply watched Evelyn disappear.

Someone had forced her.

Two hours later, detectives searched the conservatory again.

This time they weren't looking for fingerprints.

They were looking for signs of a struggle.

Near one enormous marble planter, a forensic technician called Sarah over.

"Detective."

She crouched.

Between two cracks beneath the planter sat something almost invisible.

A pearl.

Not just any pearl.

It matched the necklace Evelyn had worn during rehearsal dinner.

Sarah carefully sealed it.

"There was definitely a struggle."

Another technician discovered something else.

A broken acrylic fingernail.

Long.

Perfectly manicured.

Bright red.

Evelyn never wore red nails.

Victoria always did.

Sarah smiled without humor.

"Interesting."

At that exact moment, Victoria stood inside her guest suite staring into the mirror.

Her makeup looked flawless.

Her hands did not.

One fingernail was missing.

She remembered exactly how it had happened.

Evelyn had fought harder than expected.

Victoria whispered to herself,

"They'll never prove anything."

She was wrong.

Meanwhile, Adrian ordered the mansion's security company to recover deleted surveillance files.

The technicians warned him.

"The system was professionally wiped."

"So recover it anyway."

"It could take days."

"I'll pay whatever it costs."

Money couldn't buy love.

But sometimes it bought time.

Across town...

Inside an abandoned lake house...

Evelyn slowly opened her eyes.

Her wrists hurt.

Her head pounded.

The room smelled of damp wood.

Rain hit broken windows.

She tried to sit up.

Pain shot through her shoulder.

Someone had tied her hands.

A chair scraped nearby.

A familiar voice laughed softly.

"I wondered when you'd wake up."

Evelyn looked up.

Her blood turned cold.

Lucas Mercer.

Adrian's former business partner.

The man who had disappeared after stealing millions from Blackwood Industries three years earlier.

Everyone believed he had fled Europe.

Apparently...

He hadn't.

Lucas smiled.

"You've caused me quite a bit of trouble."

Evelyn stared.

"You work with Victoria."

He applauded slowly.

"Very good."

"You'll never get away with this."

Lucas laughed.

"I already have."

He walked toward the dirty window.

"You know what your biggest mistake was?"

"What?"

"You made Adrian happy."

Evelyn didn't answer.

Lucas continued.

"Happy men pay attention."

"Broken men don't."

"You wanted his heart."

"Victoria wanted his fortune."

"I wanted his company."

He smiled.

"So we all had different goals."

Evelyn suddenly understood.

Victoria wasn't acting alone.

She had never been acting alone.

Lucas crouched beside her.

"You'll stay here until the wedding."

"There won't be a wedding."

"There will."

He smiled.

"Just not with you."

Back at Blackwood Manor...

Adrian received another surprise.

The children's nanny requested to speak privately.

"My name is Olivia."

"I know."

"I didn't want to say anything before."

"Now you do?"

She nodded nervously.

"I saw Miss Victoria arguing with Miss Evelyn yesterday."

Adrian stood immediately.

"Why didn't you tell anyone?"

"I was afraid."

"What did you hear?"

Olivia swallowed.

"Victoria said..."

"If I can't marry Adrian..."

"...then nobody will."

The room became silent again.

Sarah slowly closed her notebook.

"This isn't jealousy anymore."

"It's conspiracy."

Adrian walked toward the enormous window overlooking the estate.

For the first time since Evelyn disappeared...

He wasn't chasing shadows anymore.

He had suspects.

He had witnesses.

And somewhere...

Evelyn was still alive.

He could feel it.

That night...

A computer specialist entered Adrian's office carrying a recovered hard drive.

"I think we got something."

The deleted security footage had been partially restored.

Most clips were corrupted.

One survived.

The screen flickered.

The timestamp showed:

7:42 PM

Rehearsal dinner.

The camera overlooked the conservatory entrance.

Guests walked past.

Florists worked.

Staff hurried by.

Then...

Evelyn entered.

Alone.

Thirty seconds later...

Victoria followed.

Another minute passed.

Lucas Mercer appeared from a staff hallway wearing a catering uniform.

Sarah whispered,

"There he is."

The video froze.

Corrupted.

Then returned.

Only three seconds remained.

Lucas and Victoria carried an unconscious woman through the service exit.

Only her wedding dress was visible.

Adrian didn't breathe.

Sarah looked at him.

"We have enough for arrest warrants."

But Adrian shook his head.

"No."

Sarah frowned.

"What?"

"They don't know we have this."

"You want to wait?"

Adrian's eyes became ice.

"I want them to lead me to Evelyn."

May you like
