Chapter 4 – The Wedding That Became a Trial

The next morning, Blackwood Manor looked exactly as it had been designed to look.
Elegant.
Perfect.
Untouched by scandal.
Fresh white roses lined the entrance. Crystal chandeliers reflected golden morning light across polished marble floors. Caterers carried silver trays through the halls while musicians rehearsed beside the grand staircase.
To every outsider, the billionaire's wedding was proceeding exactly as planned.
Only the people inside the mansion knew the truth.
There was no bride.
There was only a desperate search.
Adrian Blackwood stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his study, adjusting the cuff of his black tuxedo.
Detective Sarah Donovan entered quietly.
"The arrest warrants are ready."
Adrian didn't turn around.
"No."
Sarah sighed.
"You've already said that."
"And my answer hasn't changed."
"They kidnapped your fiancée."
"I know."
"They assaulted her."
"I know."
"They're dangerous."
"I know."
Sarah crossed her arms.
"Then explain why we're letting them walk free."
Adrian finally faced her.
"Because they still think they've won."
He picked up his phone.
"If Victoria believes I suspect nothing, she'll try to finish what she started."
"And Lucas?"
"He'll lead us straight to Evelyn."
Across the mansion, Victoria Ashcroft admired herself in an antique mirror.
She wore a breathtaking ivory wedding gown covered with hand-sewn pearls.
It wasn't originally hers.
It had been altered overnight.
The bridal boutique had worked until three in the morning after Victoria claimed Evelyn had suffered a "nervous breakdown" and canceled the ceremony.
The newspapers had accepted the story immediately.
Rich people rarely admitted darker truths.
Victoria smiled.
Everything was finally hers.
The mansion.
The fortune.
The Blackwood name.
All she had to do was survive one more day.
Lucas Mercer wasn't smiling.
He waited inside a black SUV parked nearly two miles from the estate.
His burner phone vibrated.
Victoria.
"Everything is under control," she whispered.
"It better be."
"It is."
"What about the girl?"
Lucas looked toward the abandoned lake house.
"She's still alive."
"She shouldn't be."
Lucas frowned.
"We agreed she stays alive until after the wedding."
There was a pause.
Then Victoria spoke coldly.
"Plans change."
The line disconnected.
Lucas stared at the phone.
For the first time since their partnership began...
He realized Victoria might betray him next.
At Blackwood Manor...
Little Emma wandered through the ballroom holding Hannah's hand.
She looked around with confused eyes.
"So many flowers."
Hannah smiled weakly.
"Yes."
"But Pretty Bride isn't here."
"No."
Emma frowned.
"Then why are people pretending?"
Hannah had no answer.
Guests arrived anyway.
Senators.
Judges.
Movie stars.
Business executives.
Every one of them believed they were attending the wedding of the year.
Instead...
They were walking into a trap.
At precisely eleven o'clock...
Adrian descended the grand staircase.
Hundreds of cameras flashed.
Reporters shouted questions.
"Mr. Blackwood!"
"Is Miss Hartwell ill?"
"Has the wedding been postponed?"
Adrian smiled politely.
"Everything will be explained soon."
His calmness convinced everyone the rumors were false.
Even Victoria relaxed.
Perfect.
Exactly as Adrian intended.
Meanwhile...
Twenty miles away...
Evelyn Hartwell had stopped crying.
Fear had transformed into determination.
Lucas had underestimated one thing.
He kept leaving her alone.
Not for long.
Never more than fifteen minutes.
But fifteen minutes was enough.
She had spent hours rubbing the ropes binding her wrists against an exposed nail protruding from the wooden chair.
The skin had torn.
Blood stained the rope.
Still she continued.
Finally...
One strand snapped.
Then another.
Then another.
Her hands came free.
She didn't celebrate.
She knew better.
She quietly untied her ankles.
Looked toward the window.
Listened.
Silence.
She searched the tiny cabin.
Nothing useful.
Until...
Inside an old kitchen drawer...
She found a steak knife.
Small.
Dull.
Enough.
Back at the mansion...
The ceremony began.
Music filled the ballroom.
Guests stood.
Victoria appeared at the top of the staircase wearing Evelyn's dream wedding.
People applauded.
No one questioned why the bride looked different from the engagement photographs.
Money rewrites memories.
Adrian looked up.
Their eyes met.
Victoria smiled.
He didn't.
As she slowly descended the staircase, she whispered to herself,
"One more hour."
Then everything would belong to her.
Halfway down...
Sarah received a text.
Location confirmed.
Lucas's vehicle had been tracked.
The abandoned lake house.
She discreetly approached Adrian.
"We found her."
His heartbeat exploded.
"Alive?"
"We don't know."
Without changing expression, Adrian nodded almost invisibly.
"Go."
Sarah immediately left with tactical officers through a private exit.
No guest noticed.
The wedding music covered everything.
Lucas returned to the cabin carrying groceries.
The front door stood slightly open.
He froze.
No.
Impossible.
He slowly entered.
The chair was empty.
The ropes lay on the floor.
"Damn it!"
He searched every room.
Nothing.
Then—
The dull steak knife pressed against his throat.
"Don't move."
Evelyn's voice shook.
But the blade didn't.
Lucas slowly smiled.
"You won't kill me."
"No."
She pushed harder.
"But I'll stop you."
He laughed.
"You're stronger than Victoria said."
"I don't care what Victoria said."
Lucas suddenly grabbed her wrist.
The knife clattered away.
They struggled violently.
Furniture crashed.
Glass shattered.
Evelyn managed to strike him across the face with a broken lamp.
Lucas staggered backward.
Blood ran from his forehead.
Outside...
Police SUVs raced down the dirt road.
Lucas heard them first.
His face changed.
"She betrayed me."
He looked toward Evelyn.
"No."
"She betrayed both of us."
He ran for the back door.
Seconds later...
Tactical officers burst inside.
"Police!"
"Don't move!"
Lucas escaped through the woods.
Evelyn collapsed into Sarah Donovan's arms.
"It's okay," Sarah whispered.
"You're safe."
Back at Blackwood Manor...
The officiant smiled.
"Dearly beloved..."
He never finished.
The ballroom doors slammed open.
Every guest turned.
Sarah entered first.
Behind her...
Walked Evelyn.
Dirty.
Bruised.
Barefoot.
Still wearing the torn rehearsal dinner dress she had disappeared in.
A hundred gasps echoed through the mansion.
One woman screamed.
Someone dropped a champagne glass.
It shattered across the marble floor.
Victoria's face lost all color.
"No..."
She whispered.
"No..."
Adrian stepped away from the altar.
Toward Evelyn.
Slowly.
Carefully.
As though afraid she might disappear again.
When they finally stood face to face...
Neither spoke.
Evelyn reached up and touched his cheek.
"I'm sorry."
Adrian shook his head.
"You came back."
Tears filled Evelyn's eyes.
"I never left willingly."
Adrian gently pulled her into his arms.
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Television cameras captured every second.
Victoria suddenly shouted,
"She's lying!"
Everyone turned.
Victoria pointed wildly.
"She's trying to ruin my wedding!"
Sarah calmly removed a small evidence bag.
Inside...
The broken red acrylic fingernail.
Then another.
Evelyn's pearl.
Then finally...
The restored security footage.
A large screen descended from the ballroom ceiling.
The video played.
Guests watched Victoria follow Evelyn into the conservatory.
Watched Lucas arrive.
Watched them carry Evelyn's unconscious body through the service entrance.
Silence.
Complete silence.
Victoria slowly backed away.
"No..."
"The video is fake..."
"It's edited..."
Sarah interrupted.
"Forensics already authenticated it."
Adrian looked at the woman he had almost married.
"I trusted you."
Victoria's eyes filled with panic.
"I did it because I loved you!"
"No."
Adrian answered quietly.
"You did it because you loved my money."
Victoria suddenly ran toward the side exit.
She never made it.
Two officers blocked the doorway.
Handcuffs clicked around her wrists.
As guests watched in disbelief...
Victoria screamed one final sentence.
"If Lucas talks, you'll all regret it!"
Sarah looked directly at Adrian.
"That's exactly what we're counting on."
Across the ballroom...
Little Emma tugged on Hannah's sleeve.
"The bad princess is going away?"
Hannah smiled through tears.
"Yes."
Emma looked toward Evelyn and Adrian.
"So the good princess can stay?"
Adrian overheard.
For the first time in days...
He smiled.
"Yes."
"The good princess is finally home."
But even as police cars carried Victoria away...
One mystery remained.
Lucas Mercer had escaped into the forest.
And everyone knew...
May you like
He was desperate enough to come back one last time.
