Chapter 1 – The Question That Froze the Mansion

No one answered Grant Ashford's question.

"What bruise?"

His voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

When the richest man in the room suddenly stopped smiling, the entire mansion seemed to hold its breath.

Lily Harper wished the polished hardwood floor would simply swallow her whole.

Grace, oblivious to the silence she had created, leaned closer to her mother.

"The purple one."

She pointed innocently toward Lily's wrist.

"Right there."

Lily instinctively pulled her sleeve lower.

"It's nothing, sweetheart."

"But it hurts."

Grace frowned.

"I kissed it yesterday."

A murmur spread across the dining room.

Grant slowly stood.

At six-foot-three, dressed in a tailored navy suit, he carried himself with the quiet authority of a man used to making billion-dollar decisions.

But now his attention wasn't on investors.

It wasn't on the senators seated across from him.

Nor on the celebrities attending the Ashford Foundation gala.

His eyes were fixed on Lily.

"Ms. Harper."

His tone softened.

"Would you please show me your wrist?"

Lily's heart raced.

"No, sir."

"I said..."

"It's only a bump."

Grant noticed something immediately.

She never looked him in the eye.

Not once.

Instead...

She glanced toward Blair.

Only for a second.

But Grant saw it.

Blair noticed too.

Her perfect smile returned almost instantly.

"Oh, Grant."

She laughed lightly.

"Poor Grace probably bumped into her while playing."

Grace immediately shook her tiny head.

"No."

The room became quiet again.

"I didn't hurt Mommy."

Grant looked down at the little girl.

"Then who did?"

Grace answered without hesitation.

"The bad man."

Lily's face turned white.

"Grace."

"Honey..."

"We don't talk about that."

"But he made you cry."

The child's voice trembled.

"He squeezed your arm."

Grant felt something cold settle inside his chest.

He turned toward Lily.

"What bad man?"

Lily swallowed.

"There isn't one."

Grace blinked in confusion.

"But Mommy..."

"You said not to tell."

Blair Interferes

Blair immediately pushed back her chair.

"I think the child is confused."

She smiled at the guests.

"Toddlers imagine things."

Several guests nodded awkwardly.

Grant didn't.

He continued watching Lily.

"Did someone hurt you?"

Lily forced a smile.

"No, sir."

"You can tell me."

"I'm fine."

She wasn't convincing.

Not even a little.

Grant had negotiated billion-dollar mergers.

He had watched executives lie under oath.

He recognized fear when he saw it.

And Lily Harper looked terrified.

Not of answering.

But of answering honestly.

A Mother's Instinct

Grace climbed down from her booster seat.

Ignoring every wealthy guest in the room, she walked around the enormous dining table.

Her tiny shoes echoed softly across the marble floor.

She reached her mother.

Wrapped both little arms around Lily's waist.

Then looked directly at Grant.

"The bad man said..."

She struggled to remember.

"...if Mommy tells..."

"He'll take me away."

A wine glass shattered.

Someone had dropped it.

Grant's expression changed completely.

He knelt until he was eye level with Grace.

"Sweetheart."

"Do you know the bad man's name?"

Grace nodded.

"Evan."

Lily closed her eyes.

It was over.

Everything.

The secret she had buried for four years had just been spoken aloud by the only person she had been trying to protect.

Grant's Suspicion

Grant slowly stood.

"Evan who?"

Lily whispered,

"Please..."

"Not here."

Grant looked around the table.

Every guest was pretending not to listen.

Every guest was listening.

He addressed the room.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"I'm afraid dinner is over."

The investors looked surprised.

The senator frowned.

One television anchor immediately reached for his phone before security politely asked everyone to leave their devices on the table until they exited the estate.

Within minutes...

The enormous dining room was nearly empty.

Only Grant.

Blair.

Lily.

Grace.

Mrs. Evelyn Brooks, the longtime house manager.

And Grant's head of security, Marcus Cole, remained.

The Bruise

Grant gently held out his hand.

"Lily."

"I need to see."

For several seconds...

She didn't move.

Then, with trembling fingers...

She rolled back the cuff of her uniform.

The room fell silent.

Dark purple bruises wrapped almost entirely around her wrist.

Finger marks.

Large ones.

Marcus frowned immediately.

"That's recent."

Grant looked at Lily.

"Who did this?"

She whispered,

"My ex."

Blair folded her arms.

"So call the police."

"It isn't that simple."

"Why not?"

Lily hesitated.

Then quietly answered,

"Because he isn't just my ex anymore."

Grant waited.

Lily finally looked up.

"He's Grace's father."

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Blair's Unexpected Reaction

Everyone expected Blair to show sympathy.

Instead...

Something strange crossed her face.

Recognition.

It lasted less than a second.

But Grant saw it.

"So..."

Blair said carefully.

"He's back."

Lily stared.

"You know him?"

Realizing her mistake, Blair quickly smiled.

"I meant..."

"You just said he came back."

Grant narrowed his eyes.

No.

That wasn't what she had meant.

He knew Blair well enough to recognize when she was improvising.

Marcus noticed it too.

The head of security quietly made a mental note.

The Security Footage

Grant turned toward Marcus.

"The cameras."

Marcus nodded.

"I'll pull footage from every gate."

Lily immediately panicked.

"No!"

Grant looked surprised.

"Why not?"

"Please..."

"If Evan knows I told anyone..."

"He'll come back."

Grant's voice became firm.

"He won't touch you again."

Lily almost laughed.

Rich men always believed money could stop monsters.

Poor women knew better.

Monsters usually learned to wear expensive shoes.

Meanwhile...

Across the street from Ashford Estate...

Inside a black pickup truck...

A man lowered a pair of binoculars.

He had been watching the mansion for almost two hours.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Did she talk?

He smiled coldly.

Looking through the windshield toward the glowing mansion, he typed only four words.

Not yet. But soon.

Then another message arrived.

One that made his smile disappear.

If Grant Ashford finds out who you really work for... we're all finished.

The man looked back at the mansion.

His expression darkened.

"No," he muttered.

"That billionaire isn't going to figure it out."

He started the engine.

Neither Grant...

Nor Lily...

Nor little Grace...

Had any idea that Evan Mercer wasn't acting alone.

Someone inside Ashford Estate had brought him there.

And that someone was sitting only a few feet away from Grant...

Smiling as though nothing had happened.

May you like

Blair Sutton.
