CHAPTER 2 – The Camera Never Lies... Until Someone Deletes the Truth

Grant Ashford stood motionless at the head of the dining room.

Everyone else had left.

The glittering chandeliers still reflected off crystal glasses and polished silverware, but the elegant dinner had turned into something no one could have imagined.

His attention never left Lily Harper.

The bruises around her wrist were unmistakable.

They were not the result of an accident.

Someone had wrapped powerful fingers around her arm with enough force to leave deep purple marks.

Grant had spent years negotiating with ruthless businessmen.

He recognized intimidation when he saw it.

"Lily," he said quietly, "when did this happen?"

She lowered her eyes.

"Three nights ago."

"And this Evan..."

"My ex."

"He found me outside the service entrance."

Grant frowned.

"How did he know where you worked?"

Lily hesitated.

"I... I don't know."

Across the room, Blair Sutton folded her arms.

"That's exactly why the police should handle it."

Marcus Cole, Grant's longtime head of security, looked toward Grant.

"I've already requested footage from every exterior camera."

Grant nodded.

"Let's see it."

For the first time that evening...

Blair looked genuinely nervous.

The Security Room

Ten minutes later...

Grant, Marcus, Blair, Lily, and Mrs. Evelyn Brooks entered the estate's security office.

Sixteen large monitors covered the wall.

Every hallway.

Every gate.

Every entrance.

Marcus inserted his security key.

The recordings began loading.

"Service Gate."

"Three nights ago."

"9:30 p.m."

Static flickered.

Then...

Nothing.

Marcus frowned.

The screen remained black.

He checked another camera.

Black.

Another.

Still black.

Grant's voice became cold.

"What happened?"

Marcus typed rapidly.

"The files are gone."

"Gone?"

"They've been deleted."

Silence filled the room.

Grant slowly turned.

"Can security footage simply disappear?"

Marcus answered immediately.

"No."

"It requires administrator access."

Grant's expression hardened.

"Who has that?"

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Only three people."

"Myself."

"You."

"And..."

He hesitated.

Grant already knew.

"...Miss Sutton."

Blair stared at him.

"You can't seriously think I deleted security footage."

Marcus answered carefully.

"I'm simply stating who had access."

Blair crossed her arms.

"This is ridiculous."

Grant said nothing.

But for the first time since their engagement...

He wondered how many things he truly knew about the woman standing beside him.

Grace Draws a Picture

Meanwhile...

Grace sat quietly in the children's playroom with colored pencils.

Mrs. Brooks smiled gently.

"What are you drawing?"

Grace held up the paper proudly.

"My family."

Mrs. Brooks looked closer.

There was Lily.

Grace.

A tall man colored completely in black.

And another woman with long yellow hair.

Mrs. Brooks frowned.

"Who's this?"

Grace pointed to the black figure.

"The bad man."

"And her?"

"The shiny lady."

Mrs. Brooks blinked.

"Shiny lady?"

"The one who talks to the bad man."

The room suddenly felt much colder.

Mrs. Brooks knelt.

"Grace..."

"Did you ever see them together?"

Grace nodded innocently.

"Outside."

"They were whispering."

"When?"

"The day Mommy cried."

Mrs. Brooks felt her heartbeat quicken.

Children rarely lied.

Especially children this young.

A Phone Call From the Past

At that exact moment...

Grant's phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name he hadn't seen in years.

Detective Samuel Pierce.

Grant answered immediately.

"Sam?"

"I heard about the deleted footage."

Grant looked surprised.

"You already know?"

"I've been investigating Evan Mercer for six months."

Grant frowned.

"You know Evan?"

Detective Pierce's voice became serious.

"Evan isn't just a violent ex-boyfriend."

"He's a professional blackmailer."

Grant felt his stomach tighten.

"He works for whoever pays the most."

Pierce continued.

"He specializes in infiltrating wealthy estates."

"Stealing confidential information."

"Corporate espionage."

Grant looked toward Blair without saying a word.

Pierce added one more sentence.

"And recently..."

"Someone paid him nearly half a million dollars."

The Secret Safe

Grant hung up.

Marcus immediately asked,

"What did Detective Pierce say?"

Grant summarized everything.

The room fell silent.

Then Marcus asked the obvious question.

"What could someone want from this house?"

Grant didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He walked toward his private office.

Inside the study stood a large oil painting of his late father.

Behind it...

Hidden inside the wall...

Was a biometric safe.

Grant placed his hand on the scanner.

The safe clicked open.

Inside were dozens of legal documents.

Property deeds.

Business contracts.

Family trust records.

Everything appeared untouched.

Until...

Grant noticed one folder missing.

His face changed.

Marcus stepped closer.

"What is it?"

Grant whispered,

"The Hartford acquisition file."

Marcus frowned.

"The billion-dollar merger?"

Grant nodded slowly.

"It disappeared."

Blair forced a laugh.

"Maybe you moved it."

Grant turned.

"I never move that file."

Lily Finally Speaks

Lily quietly stepped forward.

"I think..."

"I know why Evan came."

Everyone looked at her.

"He didn't ask about money."

"He didn't ask about jewelry."

"He wanted wedding schedules."

"Guest lists."

"Which security guards worked which shifts."

Marcus immediately understood.

"They're planning something."

Grant looked at Lily.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"Because he threatened Grace."

"If I spoke..."

"...he said my little girl would disappear."

Grant looked toward Grace playing quietly in the next room.

Something inside him shifted.

This wasn't just an employee anymore.

This was a frightened mother trying to protect her child.

Blair Makes a Mistake

As everyone discussed what to do next...

Blair quietly reached for her phone beneath the table.

She typed quickly.

They're suspicious. Destroy everything tonight.

She pressed send.

Or...

She thought she had.

Instead...

The message failed.

No Signal.

Marcus had activated the estate's emergency security protocol.

Every outgoing communication inside the mansion had been temporarily blocked.

Blair didn't notice.

But Marcus did.

He had been watching her reflection in the glass.

He said nothing.

Yet.

Grant Begins Watching

Late that night...

Grant couldn't sleep.

Something about the evening refused to leave his mind.

Grace's innocent question.

The deleted footage.

The missing file.

Blair's strange reactions.

He quietly walked downstairs.

Passing the kitchen...

He noticed light beneath the pantry door.

Inside...

Lily sat alone.

Holding a mug of tea.

Crying silently.

She quickly wiped her tears when she saw him.

"I'm sorry."

"I shouldn't be here."

Grant shook his head.

"You don't have to apologize."

Neither spoke for several moments.

Finally...

Grant asked quietly,

"Did he hurt you before he disappeared four years ago?"

Lily stared into her tea.

"Every promise he ever made."

Grant understood.

Sometimes...

Broken hearts left bruises no one could see.

The Shadow Outside

Far beyond the estate gates...

A black SUV remained parked beneath towering pine trees.

Inside...

Evan Mercer lowered his binoculars.

His phone finally buzzed.

A delayed message arrived.

They're suspicious. Destroy everything tonight.

Evan smiled.

He started the engine.

"So..."

"You finally admitted you're scared."

He reached into the passenger seat.

There lay a small backpack.

Inside...

A laptop.

Lock-picking tools.

A silenced pistol.

And a photograph.

It showed Grant Ashford standing beside his late father.

On the back, someone had written only one sentence:

The real target isn't the company... it's the Ashford family secret.

Evan looked toward the glowing mansion.

"You should've let Lily leave with me."

"Now everyone is going to learn what your father buried."

As the SUV disappeared into the darkness...

No one inside Ashford Estate realized that the missing merger file was only a distraction.

The real prize...

Had been hidden beneath Grant's own roof for over twenty years.

And before dawn...

May you like

Someone inside the mansion intended to steal it.

End of Chapter 2.
