Chapter 3 – The Wedding Invitation That Became a Trap

The bruise on Lily Harper's wrist was no longer the biggest secret inside Ashford Manor.
Three days after Grace innocently exposed it at dinner, Grant Ashford could not stop thinking about the frightened look in Lily's eyes.
It was not the bruise itself.
It was what came after.
When he had quietly asked who had hurt her, Lily had smiled with heartbreaking politeness and answered the same way so many people trapped by fear always answered.
"I slipped."
Grant had built billion-dollar companies by recognizing lies hidden beneath polished presentations.
He knew one when he heard one.
She had not slipped.
Someone had made her afraid enough to pretend she had.
Across the mansion, Blair Sutton watched everything.
She noticed Grant looking toward Lily whenever they crossed paths.
She noticed Grace laughing whenever Grant bent down to speak to her.
She noticed Eleanor, the elderly housekeeper who had served the Ashford family for forty years, smiling every time Lily entered a room.
Worst of all...
She noticed that people trusted Lily.
And Blair hated women people trusted.
Because trust created influence.
Influence created problems.
Especially when Blair was weeks away from marrying one of the richest men on the East Coast.
She could not afford distractions.
She certainly could not afford one beautiful young maid becoming the sympathetic heroine inside Grant's own home.
That afternoon, Blair invited Lily into the morning room.
The invitation sounded friendly.
The room did not.
Everything inside was white.
White furniture.
White roses.
White curtains.
White marble.
The room looked peaceful.
It felt like a courtroom.
Blair sat gracefully beside the fireplace, sipping tea.
"Lily," she smiled warmly.
"Sit down."
Lily remained standing.
"You wanted to see me, Miss Sutton?"
"I wanted to apologize."
Lily blinked.
"For what?"
"If I've ever seemed... demanding."
"You haven't."
Blair laughed softly.
"You don't have to protect my feelings."
Lily said nothing.
Blair slowly stood.
"I know running this estate isn't easy."
"It isn't."
"And raising Grace alone..."
That made Lily tense immediately.
"...must be exhausting."
"It has its moments."
"I admire single mothers."
No, you don't, Lily thought.
Blair walked closer.
"So I'd like to help."
Lily frowned.
"Help?"
"I'd like to pay for Grace's preschool."
Lily stared.
"Or perhaps private school."
"No."
Blair looked surprised.
"No?"
"I appreciate the offer."
"But?"
"I don't accept gifts."
Blair smiled wider.
"They wouldn't be gifts."
"They'd be... gratitude."
Lily understood immediately.
Nothing Blair ever offered came without strings.
"I already have everything I need."
"You live in the staff quarters."
"Yes."
"You clean floors."
"Yes."
"You make less in a year than I spend on handbags."
Lily remained calm.
"Probably."
"So why refuse?"
Because people like you never give without taking.
Instead she answered politely.
"My daughter deserves things earned honestly."
Something cold flashed across Blair's face.
"So proud."
"My mother taught me that."
"Your mother was poor."
"Yes."
"And now you're poor."
Lily smiled.
"But I'm still free."
For the first time...
Blair's smile disappeared.
The silence lasted nearly ten seconds.
Then Blair quietly placed her teacup on the table.
"I heard," she said carefully, "that Grace asked an unfortunate question during dinner."
Lily's heartbeat quickened.
"Children say unexpected things."
"They do."
"I've explained that."
"I'm sure."
Blair walked slowly around Lily.
"Children also repeat things adults tell them."
"They do."
"I wonder..."
She stopped behind Lily.
"...what else Grace might accidentally repeat."
Lily turned.
"My daughter doesn't lie."
"I never said she did."
"Then what are you saying?"
"I'm saying children can be... unpredictable."
She smiled again.
"And accidents happen."
Lily's blood ran cold.
Was that a threat?
Before she could answer—
Grant walked into the room.
"There you are."
Both women looked toward him.
Grant noticed the tension instantly.
"Am I interrupting?"
Blair answered first.
"Not at all."
"We were becoming friends."
Grant looked at Lily.
She forced a smile.
"Miss Sutton was just leaving."
That evening Grant found himself watching Lily from across the kitchen.
She moved quietly between the cooks, helping prepare desserts for the upcoming charity gala.
Everyone seemed relaxed around her.
Even the grumpiest chef laughed when Grace proudly showed him a drawing.
Grant realized something.
No one became nervous when Lily entered a room.
They became calmer.
That was rare.
Very rare.
Meanwhile...
Someone else had entered Connecticut.
Evan Mercer parked his black pickup nearly a mile from Ashford Manor.
He watched the mansion through binoculars.
Security.
Cameras.
Guards.
Delivery schedules.
He wrote everything down.
Then he smiled.
"Almost time."
Inside the truck lay several forged employee badges.
A maintenance uniform.
An electrician's toolbox.
And photographs.
One photograph showed Grant Ashford.
Another showed Blair Sutton.
The last one...
showed the vault beneath Ashford Manor.
Someone had hired Evan.
Lily had never been the real target.
She had simply been...
the easiest way inside.
Two nights later invitations went out for the Ashford Charity Foundation Gala.
Every politician.
Every celebrity.
Every billionaire.
Every television station.
More than five hundred guests.
Blair intended the evening to become the unofficial announcement of her wedding.
Everything had to be perfect.
Everything.
Especially appearances.
She summoned Lily again.
"This Saturday," Blair said, "I want Grace to attend."
Lily frowned.
"What?"
"As a flower girl."
"I don't understand."
"The guests adore children."
"You've never wanted Grace near your parties."
"I'm changing."
"No."
Blair's expression hardened.
"It wasn't a request."
Lily folded her hands.
"My daughter won't attend."
"You work for us."
"I work for Mr. Ashford."
Blair stepped closer.
"And soon..."
"I'll own everything here."
Lily met her eyes.
"No."
Blair blinked.
"No?"
"Not everything."
"What does that mean?"
"You'll never own people."
The words landed like a slap.
Blair smiled.
A terrifying smile.
"We'll see."
That same night...
Grace couldn't sleep.
Rain tapped gently against the staff cottage windows.
Lily tucked the blanket around her daughter.
"Mommy?"
"Yes?"
"Are you scared?"
Lily hesitated.
"A little."
"Because of the mean lady?"
Lily froze.
"What mean lady?"
"The shiny one."
Blair.
Grace hugged her stuffed rabbit.
"She looks at you like the wolf in my storybook."
Lily kissed her forehead.
"Don't worry."
"I'll protect you."
Grace smiled.
"No."
"You protect me."
"I protect you."
Then the little girl whispered something that made Lily's heart stop.
"The scary man came back."
Lily turned instantly.
"What?"
"The one outside."
"When?"
"Today."
"Where?"
"He was looking through the fence."
Lily's face turned white.
The next morning she secretly checked the security office.
One camera overlooking the west service gate had malfunctioned again.
Exactly the same camera.
Exactly where Evan had grabbed her.
Someone had disabled it.
Again.
She immediately went to Grant.
"Mr. Ashford..."
He looked up from several contracts.
"Yes?"
"I think someone is watching the estate."
Grant became serious.
"Why?"
Lily hesitated.
Because telling him meant admitting Evan had returned.
Because Evan had threatened Grace.
Because fear still controlled her.
Finally...
"I just have a bad feeling."
Grant studied her quietly.
Then nodded.
"I trust your instincts."
He picked up the phone.
"Double security."
"Immediately."
Across town...
Evan smiled as he watched additional guards arrive.
Perfect.
More security meant everyone would focus on the gates.
Not the guests.
Exactly as planned.
Saturday finally arrived.
Ashford Manor transformed into something out of a fairy tale.
Thousands of white roses.
Crystal chandeliers.
Golden candlelight.
An orchestra tuning violins.
Luxury cars stretched for nearly half a mile outside the gates.
Television crews waited.
Reporters rehearsed introductions.
"The Ashford Foundation Gala promises to be the social event of the year..."
Inside...
Blair wore a breathtaking silver gown.
Grant looked handsome in a black tuxedo.
Lily wore the simple gray uniform of the household staff.
Grace wore a pale blue dress Eleanor had secretly sewn by hand.
She looked like a tiny angel.
Grant smiled when he saw her.
"You look beautiful."
Grace grinned.
"So do you."
"You smell nice."
Grant laughed.
"Thank you."
She leaned closer.
"But you're still sad."
Grant blinked.
"What makes you think that?"
"You smile with your mouth."
"Not your eyes."
Even Eleanor looked surprised.
Children noticed everything.
The ballroom slowly filled.
Champagne flowed.
Music echoed beneath glittering chandeliers.
Blair greeted guests flawlessly.
Grant smiled automatically.
Lily worked quietly among the staff.
Then...
Grace disappeared.
One second she stood beside Eleanor.
The next—
Gone.
Lily turned.
"Grace?"
No answer.
Panic exploded inside her.
She searched the ballroom.
Kitchen.
Garden.
Library.
Nothing.
"Grace!"
Guests began turning.
Grant immediately noticed.
"What happened?"
"I can't find her!"
Without hesitation he ordered security.
"Lock every exit."
"No one leaves."
Upstairs...
A tiny little girl quietly wandered into the east hallway.
She had followed a kitten.
Now she was lost.
Grace looked around nervously.
"So big..."
At the end of the hallway...
a maintenance worker wheeled a toolbox.
He looked ordinary.
Gray uniform.
Cap.
Gloves.
But when he turned—
It was Evan.
He smiled.
"Hello again."
Grace frowned.
"I know you."
"You scared Mommy."
Evan knelt.
"Let's play a game."
Grace stepped backward.
"No."
"You can help me."
"No."
He reached for her—
Suddenly another voice echoed down the hallway.
"Grace!"
It was Grant.
Evan cursed under his breath.
He disappeared through a service door before Grant rounded the corner.
Grant found Grace crying beside the wall.
He immediately picked her up.
"What happened?"
"The scary man."
"What scary man?"
"The one who hurts Mommy."
Grant's expression changed completely.
"What did he look like?"
"He had a toolbox."
Grant's eyes narrowed.
Maintenance?
No maintenance crew had been scheduled tonight.
He grabbed his radio.
"Seal every service entrance."
"We have an intruder."
Downstairs...
The orchestra stopped playing.
Guests looked around nervously.
Blair forced a smile.
"Everything is perfectly under control."
But for the first time all evening...
She looked frightened.
Not because Grace had disappeared.
Because someone else...
had entered the mansion.
And Blair recognized exactly who that someone was.
Her secret partner.
Evan Mercer.
Only...
he wasn't supposed to arrive yet.
And if he was here early...
May you like
their entire plan was beginning to fall apart.
