Chapter 13 - The Last Violation

Diego violated the protection order on a rainy Thursday.

I was leaving a job site near Union Station when I saw him standing beside my car.

My body recognized danger before my mind did.

I stopped.

He looked thinner.

Angrier.

Less polished.

“Valerie,” he called.

I reached for my phone.

“You need to leave.”

“I just want to talk.”

“You’re violating a court order.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Court order. Lawyer. Police. You really turned into someone else.”

“No. You finally met the person I was when I stopped protecting you.”

He stepped closer.

I stepped back.

Rain darkened the concrete between us.

“You ruined my life,” he said.

“I reported what you did.”

“My family is falling apart.”

“Because of what they did.”

“My father is blaming me.”

“That sounds like a family problem.”

His face twisted.

For a second, I saw the dining room again.

The plate.

The blood.

The silence.

But this time we were outside. This time my phone was already recording. This time a security guard from the job site had stepped into view.

Diego saw him too.

“You think people will always save you now?”

I looked at him.

“No. I think I finally learned to save myself.”

He lunged—not far, not enough to touch me, but enough.

The security guard shouted.

I dialed 911.

Diego ran.

He made it half a block before police stopped him.

At the hearing two days later, the judge revoked his bond.

Victoria sobbed in court.

Arturo did not attend.

Diego looked at me once as deputies led him away.

For the first time, there was no rage in his eyes.

Only disbelief.

Men like Diego do not believe consequences are real until they are wearing them.

I went home that evening and slept through the night.

No nightmares.

No phone calls.

No footsteps outside my door.

Just sleep.

May you like

Deep, clean sleep.

The kind of rest I had not known I was missing.
