Chapter 6 - Natalie’s Secret

Natalie stayed with me for one week.

On the eighth morning, she sat at my kitchen table and placed a folder between us.

“I need to show you something.”

Inside were photographs.

A bruised upper arm.

A cracked bathroom mirror.

A text from Javier saying: You know what happens when you embarrass the family.

I looked up slowly.

“Natalie.”

She swallowed hard.

“I told myself it wasn’t like Diego and you. Javier never threw anything at my head.”

“That doesn’t make it safe.”

“I know that now.”

The folder also held bank statements.

Javier had drained her personal savings in small transfers. Victoria had convinced Natalie to quit her nursing program after the twins were born. Arturo had put her name on family credit cards and blamed her for balances she never created.

“They trap women differently,” Natalie said. “But they trap us all.”

I reached across the table and took her hand.

“You can stay here.”

She shook her head.

“I have to get my kids.”

My stomach turned cold.

The twins were five years old.

Sofia and Mateo.

“They’re with Javier?”

“At the estate.”

“Then we don’t go alone.”

By noon, we had called a domestic violence advocate, a family lawyer, and Officer Moore.

By three, Natalie had an emergency custody plan.

By five, we stood outside the same Cherry Hills mansion where my blood had stained their tablecloth.

But this time, police stood beside us.

Javier came to the door first.

His expression changed the moment he saw officers.

“What is this?”

Natalie’s voice trembled, but she did not back away.

“I’m taking my children.”

“They are Morales children.”

“They are my children.”

Victoria appeared behind him.

Her eyes landed on me.

“You.”

I smiled faintly.

“Me.”

The officers entered with Natalie while I waited outside. Through the open door, I heard Victoria crying about betrayal. I heard Javier demanding respect. I heard Arturo threatening lawyers.

Then I heard two little voices.

“Mommy?”

Natalie came out holding both children against her body.

Sofia clutched a stuffed rabbit.

Mateo wore mismatched shoes.

Natalie was crying, but this time her tears looked like oxygen.

As we walked toward the car, Victoria shouted from the doorway.

“You women will come crawling back!”

Natalie stopped.

For one terrifying second, I thought she might break.

Instead, she turned around.

“No,” she said. “We came back only to get what belonged to us.”

Then she put her children in my car.

And we drove away from the Morales estate with three survivors in the back seat and a future none of them could control.
