Chapter 14 - The Plea

Diego took a plea deal in spring.

Assault.

Harassment.

Violation of a protection order.

A separate fraud case remained under investigation, with Arturo’s company tangled in more documents than anyone expected.

In court, Diego read a statement.

It was polished.

Probably written by his attorney.

“I regret my actions and the pain caused.”

Pain caused.

Not the plate I threw.

Not the blood on my wife’s face.

Not the home I tried to steal.

Just pain.

When the judge asked if I wanted to speak, I stood.

My hands did not shake this time.

“I spent years believing that peace meant keeping everyone else comfortable,” I said. “I lowered my voice. I ignored insults. I explained basic respect to people committed to misunderstanding me. Then my husband hit me in front of his family, and not one of them helped me.”

The courtroom was silent.

“I want the court to understand that the assault was not a single bad moment. It was the moment their private system became visible. They believed my home, my money, my silence, and my body were all negotiable.”

Diego stared at the table.

“I am not here because I hate him. I am here because I refuse to disappear.”

The judge sentenced him to jail time, probation, mandatory counseling, and continued no contact.

It was not everything.

Justice rarely is.

But it was real.

Afterward, Amanda walked me outside.

“You did it.”

I looked up at the courthouse steps.

“No,” I said softly. “I survived long enough to tell the truth.”

Natalie and the twins waited near the fountain.

Sofia ran toward me with a drawing in her hand.

It showed three women standing beside a tall building under a yellow sun.

Me.

Natalie.

A little girl who looked like Sofia.

At the top, in shaky letters, she had written:

HOME IS WHERE NO ONE YELLS.

I folded the drawing carefully and held it to my chest.

That was when I cried.

May you like

Not because I was broken.

Because something in me was finally safe enough to feel.
