Chapter 9 - The Settlement Trap

The Morales family requested mediation.

Amanda advised me not to attend alone.

So I walked into a downtown Denver conference room with stitches still hidden beneath my hair and a lawyer who charged by the hour but smiled like justice was personal.

On the other side of the table sat Diego, Victoria, Arturo, Javier, and Martin Keller.

Diego wore a navy suit.

No wedding ring.

No remorse.

Victoria looked at me as if I were something dragged in from the street.

Keller opened a leather folder.

“We are here to avoid unnecessary escalation.”

Amanda smiled politely.

“My client is here to hear your offer. Nothing more.”

Keller slid a paper across the table.

I read it.

Then I read it again.

They wanted me to decline further cooperation with prosecutors, withdraw civil complaints, sign a confidentiality agreement, and agree to sell my condo to a Morales family trust at below-market value.

In exchange, Diego would “consider” an uncontested divorce.

I looked up.

“Is this a joke?”

Victoria leaned forward.

“You have already damaged us enough.”

I turned to Diego.

“You threw a plate at my head.”

“You provoked me.”

Amanda’s pen stopped moving.

Keller cleared his throat.

“Diego.”

But Diego was not done.

“You sat there acting superior. Acting like your apartment made you better than my family.”

“No,” I said. “Owning something they wanted made me inconvenient.”

Victoria slammed her palm on the table.

“You married into this family. You owe us loyalty.”

“I gave loyalty. You demanded ownership.”

Arturo’s voice dropped.

“Be careful, Valerie. People who embarrass powerful families often find doors closing.”

Amanda closed her folder.

“Thank you. That threat will be included in our notes.”

Keller looked furious.

“This meeting is privileged.”

“Threatening a represented victim during mediation is not the strategy you think it is,” Amanda said.

I pushed the papers back.

“No deal.”

Diego stared at me.

“You’ll lose everything fighting us.”

I stood.

“I already lost the illusion that you loved me. Everything after that is paperwork.”

Amanda and I walked out.

In the elevator, my knees almost gave out.

Amanda pressed the lobby button.

“You did well.”

“I’m shaking.”

“Courage shakes.”

When the elevator doors opened, I saw Natalie waiting with Sofia and Mateo.

The twins ran into my arms.

Natalie looked past me toward the conference room upstairs.

“Did they apologize?”

I laughed softly.

“No.”

May you like

She nodded.

“Good. Then we don’t have to feel guilty when they fall.”
