Chapter 1 – The Flight That Never Left

The boarding door reopened less than thirty seconds after Ryker Steel made the call.
Passengers already standing in the jet bridge turned in confusion as two airport police officers hurried toward the gate agent.
"Ma'am, we need you to step aside."
The woman in the beige trench coat frowned.
"What?"
"There has been an issue regarding two minors."
"I don't know what you're talking about."
She smiled too quickly.
Too confidently.
The officer glanced at the tablet in his hand.
"Are you Amelia Donovan?"
"Yes."
"And are you traveling today on Flight 472 to Zurich?"
"I am."
"Weren't two children traveling with you?"
Her smile disappeared.
"They're not mine."
Across the terminal, Ryker watched every second.
Marco folded his arms.
"She didn't even hesitate."
"No," Ryker answered quietly.
"That means she's rehearsed this."
Meanwhile, Lily and Owen hadn't moved.
They still sat on the black airport bench exactly where she'd left them.
The little girl kept staring toward the gate.
As though expecting someone to suddenly remember she existed.
Ryker slowly sat beside them.
"You don't have to wait anymore."
Neither child answered.
Instead...
Owen carefully looked at Ryker's expensive watch.
"My daddy had one."
Ryker swallowed.
"Did he?"
Owen nodded.
"He said watches help good men keep promises."
Then his tiny voice cracked.
"But he stopped coming."
Lily squeezed her brother's hand.
"Daddy didn't stop."
"He died."
Silence settled between them.
Ryker looked away for a moment.
Because suddenly...
He wasn't looking at strangers anymore.
He was looking at himself.
Thirty-two years earlier...
Ryker had been seven years old.
His father had kissed his forehead outside an orphanage.
"I'll be back before dinner."
He never returned.
Not because he wanted to leave.
Because he had been murdered two hours later.
Nobody had ever come back to explain.
Ryker remembered sitting on the orphanage steps until midnight.
Waiting.
Watching every passing car.
Believing every pair of headlights belonged to his father.
Eventually...
You stop believing.
You simply learn not to expect anyone.
Looking at Owen now...
Ryker recognized that same expression.
Children shouldn't know what hopelessness looked like.
Yet somehow...
These two already did.
Marco returned.
"They've detained the woman."
Ryker nodded.
"What did she say?"
Marco snorted.
"Claims the kids are emotionally unstable."
"Claims they ran away."
"Claims she was coming back after boarding."
Ryker laughed once.
Coldly.
"No parent boards an international flight before checking whether two five-year-olds are sitting safely."
Marco leaned closer.
"We found something else."
"What?"
"She booked only one ticket."
Ryker's eyes darkened.
"Only one?"
Marco nodded.
"There were never seats for the twins."
Across the terminal...
Airport security escorted Amelia into a private interview room.
She immediately demanded a lawyer.
"This is ridiculous."
"They aren't my responsibility."
"They're my late husband's children."
"I have every legal right to leave."
The senior officer remained calm.
"You left two minors alone in one of the busiest airports in America."
"I assumed airport staff would call social services."
"That isn't how responsible guardians behave."
"They aren't worth ruining my life over."
The room fell silent.
Even the officers looked stunned.
One finally asked...
"Did you really just say that?"
Amelia folded her arms.
"My husband spoiled them."
"He left them everything."
"I got nothing."
"So yes."
"I moved on."
Back in the terminal...
Ryker bought two hot chocolates.
One chocolate milk.
And one stuffed elephant after noticing Lily kept staring at the gift shop.
He returned carrying all four.
Lily blinked.
"For us?"
Ryker nodded.
"If you want them."
She looked at Owen first.
Only after he nodded did she accept the elephant.
Children who lived with fear always asked permission before happiness.
Ryker noticed everything.
Everything.
"So..."
he asked gently.
"Tell me about your dad."
Both children smiled for the first time.
"He built boats," Owen said proudly.
"The biggest boats."
"He smelled like the ocean," Lily added.
"He sang really bad."
Owen giggled.
"He couldn't cook."
"But he made dinosaur pancakes."
"He always burned them."
Their voices became brighter with every memory.
Then...
Both smiles disappeared together.
"He promised we'd always stay together."
Lily whispered it so softly Ryker almost missed it.
"But after Daddy got sick..."
"Everything changed."
Ryker frowned.
"What happened?"
Neither child answered immediately.
Children often protected adults.
Even bad ones.
Finally...
Owen spoke.
"Miss Amelia said Daddy was confused."
"She wouldn't let us visit the hospital."
"Then she said he went to Heaven."
Lily lowered her eyes.
"But we never got to say goodbye."
Marco returned again.
His expression had changed.
This time...
It was serious.
"Boss."
"What?"
"I had our people run the father's name."
"And?"
Marco handed over his tablet.
Ryker stared at the screen.
Then froze.
"No..."
The photo showed a smiling man beside two toddlers.
The same twins.
The same bear.
The headline beneath the photo read:
ETHAN DONOVAN—FOUNDER OF DONOVAN AEROSPACE—DIES AFTER SUDDEN CAR ACCIDENT.
Ryker knew that name.
Very well.
Years ago...
Before building Steel International...
Ryker had nearly merged with Ethan Donovan.
They'd spent three weeks negotiating.
Ethan had been brilliant.
Honest.
The kind of businessman almost impossible to find.
The deal never happened because Ethan decided to focus on spending time with his children instead of expanding overseas.
Ryker remembered laughing.
"You'll regret walking away from billions."
Ethan had smiled.
"No amount of money is worth missing bedtime."
Ryker suddenly felt sick.
Marco continued.
"There was something else."
"What?"
"Ethan changed his will three weeks before he died."
Ryker looked up.
"The twins inherited everything."
"The trust activates when they turn twenty-five."
"Until then..."
"The legal guardian controls the estate."
Ryker's jaw tightened.
"Amelia."
Marco nodded.
"Approximately six hundred million dollars."
Ryker looked toward the interview room.
Now everything made sense.
The abandonment.
The single plane ticket.
The coldness.
She hadn't abandoned children.
She had abandoned obstacles.
Lily tugged gently on Ryker's sleeve.
"Mister?"
He looked down.
"Yes?"
"Are we in trouble?"
Ryker stared into her frightened blue eyes.
"No."
"But the lady said police only come for bad kids."
Ryker's heart broke all over again.
He carefully took both tiny hands into his.
"Listen to me."
"You two didn't do anything wrong."
"Not today."
"Not ever."
Owen whispered,
"Really?"
"Really."
For the first time in years...
Ryker Steel made a promise that had nothing to do with money.
"I don't know what happens tomorrow."
"I don't know what the court will decide."
"But until someone proves they deserve to take care of you..."
"You won't be alone."
Lily leaned against his arm.
She trusted him after less than an hour.
Because children always know the difference between power...
...and protection.
At that exact moment...
Across the airport...
A black SUV pulled to the curb.
A woman stepped out wearing a navy suit, carrying a leather briefcase.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't panicking.
She looked furious.
The airport officer hurried toward her.
"Ma'am?"
She showed her identification.
"My name is Victoria Donovan."
"Ethan Donovan's sister."
"I flew here the second I heard."
Then she asked the question that changed everything.
"Where are my niece and nephew?"
And inside the security office...
Amelia's face turned completely white.
She had spent three years convincing everyone...
May you like
that Victoria Donovan was dead.
End of Chapter 1.
