Chapter 2 – The Woman Who Refused to Stay Dead

The moment Victoria Donovan stepped into Terminal 3, the entire atmosphere changed.

She was not dressed like a grieving relative rushing to claim abandoned children.

She looked like someone arriving to declare war.

Her navy suit was immaculate despite the overnight flight. Her silver hair was pulled into a smooth knot. Every step echoed across the polished airport floor with quiet authority.

Behind her walked three attorneys, two private investigators, and a retired federal marshal who now headed Donovan Aerospace Security.

Airport officers instinctively moved aside.

One of them asked politely, "Ma'am, are you really Ethan Donovan's sister?"

Victoria handed over her passport.

"I am."

The officer frowned.

"But according to county records..."

"...you died four years ago."

Victoria's expression never changed.

"No."

"I disappeared."

Across the terminal, Ryker Steel watched the scene unfold with growing curiosity.

Marco leaned closer.

"Our background search couldn't find anything after 2020."

Ryker nodded.

"Because someone erased her."

Victoria looked directly at him.

"You must be Ryker Steel."

"I am."

"My brother spoke highly of you."

Ryker extended his hand.

"I'm sorry we never finished our business together."

Victoria accepted the handshake.

"He never regretted that."

"He believed his children were worth more than another billion dollars."

Ryker smiled faintly.

"That sounds exactly like Ethan."

Then Victoria's eyes searched the waiting area.

She stopped breathing.

Lily noticed her first.

The little girl tilted her head.

"Owen..."

"I know her."

Owen looked up.

Then suddenly both twins stood.

"Aunt Vicky?"

Victoria's composure shattered.

She dropped her briefcase.

Ran across the terminal.

And fell to her knees.

"My babies..."

She wrapped both children into her arms.

For several seconds no one spoke.

Even the travelers walking past slowed down.

Lily buried her face against Victoria's shoulder.

"I thought you went to Heaven too."

Victoria closed her eyes.

"Oh sweetheart..."

"I tried to come back."

"I never stopped trying."

Inside the airport security office...

Amelia Donovan's confidence evaporated.

"No..."

"No, that's impossible."

One attorney entered carrying a folder.

He placed it on the table.

"Mrs. Donovan..."

"There are approximately forty-seven federal crimes represented inside this file."

Amelia swallowed.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

The attorney calmly opened the folder.

Forgery.

Insurance fraud.

Witness intimidation.

False death certificates.

Illegal transfer of trust assets.

Identity theft.

Attempted child abandonment.

Money laundering.

Amelia stared.

"You..."

"You've been watching me."

Victoria stepped inside.

"No."

"I've been building a case."

Three years earlier...

Victoria Donovan had been driving home from a charity gala.

Halfway across the Newport Bridge...

A black SUV forced her car into the guardrail.

The crash should have killed her.

Instead...

A commercial fisherman found her unconscious in the freezing water beneath the bridge.

By the time she woke in a private clinic in Nova Scotia...

Someone had already declared her dead.

Her bank accounts were frozen.

Her passport canceled.

Her properties transferred.

Every legal record listed her as deceased.

Someone wanted her erased.

She quickly discovered who.

Amelia.

Victoria spent the next three years living under another identity.

Not hiding.

Investigating.

She hired forensic accountants.

Former FBI agents.

Cybersecurity experts.

Private detectives.

Slowly...

Piece by piece...

They uncovered everything.

Every forged signature.

Every stolen dollar.

Every lie.

The only thing she couldn't reach...

Were Ethan's children.

Until today.

Ryker listened carefully.

"You waited three years?"

Victoria nodded sadly.

"If I'd appeared too soon..."

"She would've destroyed every piece of evidence."

"I needed proof."

"I needed enough to make sure she never hurt Lily and Owen again."

She looked toward the interview room.

"Today..."

"She made the biggest mistake of her life."

The airport police chief entered.

"We've confirmed everything."

"Mrs. Donovan..."

"You are under arrest."

Amelia laughed.

"You can't arrest me."

"I'm their legal guardian."

Victoria quietly slid another document across the table.

"No."

"You were."

The officer examined it.

An emergency court order.

Signed less than two hours earlier.

Temporary guardianship transferred to Victoria Donovan pending criminal investigation.

Amelia's face drained of color.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

Victoria answered softly.

"My brother prepared for everything."

Ryker frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Victoria looked toward the twins.

"Ethan knew someone inside the family wanted his company."

"He changed his will."

"He also recorded seventy-three encrypted video messages."

"Each one unlocked under different circumstances."

Ryker raised an eyebrow.

"Different circumstances?"

Victoria nodded.

"If he died naturally."

"If the children disappeared."

"If I disappeared."

"If the trust was challenged."

"If someone forged documents."

Marco blinked.

"He thought of everything."

Victoria smiled sadly.

"My brother trusted very few people."

At that exact moment...

One of Victoria's investigators rushed into the room.

"Ma'am."

"What is it?"

"We found another transfer."

"What transfer?"

The investigator handed her a tablet.

"Five hundred million dollars."

"Missing."

Everyone froze.

Ryker narrowed his eyes.

"When?"

"Over the last eighteen months."

"Moved through twelve shell companies."

"Current destination..."

The investigator hesitated.

"...the Cayman Islands."

Victoria whispered,

"So that's why she was running."

Amelia suddenly stood.

"I want my lawyer."

"You'll get one," the police chief replied.

"But first..."

"Where is the money?"

"I don't know."

Another lie.

Victoria simply smiled.

"You still underestimate Ethan."

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a small silver flash drive.

"My brother created an automatic tracking system."

"Every dollar moved from the children's trust leaves a digital fingerprint."

She handed it to the investigators.

"You already lost."

Hours later...

The twins sat inside the airport's private family lounge.

For the first time that day...

They looked relaxed.

Lily was coloring pictures with Victoria.

Owen sat beside Ryker building a tower from plastic blocks.

After several minutes...

Owen quietly asked,

"Mr. Steel?"

"Yes?"

"Are you rich?"

Marco nearly laughed.

Ryker smiled.

"I suppose so."

"How rich?"

Ryker shrugged.

"I don't really count anymore."

Owen thought very seriously.

"Then..."

"Can rich people buy families?"

The room became silent.

Ryker carefully answered.

"No."

"But they can protect them."

Owen nodded.

"I think that's better."

That evening...

Victoria approached Ryker.

"I owe you more than I can ever repay."

"You owe me nothing."

"You stayed."

Ryker looked toward the children.

"I know what abandonment feels like."

Victoria studied him for several seconds.

"My brother trusted almost no one."

"But if he were alive..."

"I think he would've trusted you."

Ryker looked away.

He wasn't used to compliments.

Especially ones that mattered.

Just as everyone prepared to leave the airport...

Marco's phone rang.

His expression changed immediately.

"Boss..."

"What?"

"Our security team searched Amelia's house."

"And?"

"They found an empty safe."

Ryker frowned.

"So?"

Marco looked up.

"The money wasn't the only thing missing."

"What else?"

Marco's voice became very quiet.

"Ethan Donovan kept a black ledger."

"A handwritten notebook."

"It listed every person involved in the conspiracy."

Ryker felt a chill.

"Where is it now?"

Marco slowly shook his head.

"We don't know."

At that exact moment...

Across the airport parking garage...

A man wearing a black cap climbed into a waiting SUV.

On the passenger seat beside him...

Lay an old leather notebook stamped with one name.

DONOVAN.

The man smiled as he started the engine.

"They're already too late."

The SUV disappeared into Chicago traffic.

Neither Ryker nor Victoria realized that Ethan's final secret...

May you like

...had just slipped through their fingers.
