Chapter 3 – The Ledger That Could Destroy an Empire

The black SUV disappeared into Chicago traffic before anyone realized what had been stolen.
Inside the airport, Ryker Steel was helping Owen fasten his seat belt into the back of one of his armored SUVs when Marco received another call.
He answered casually.
Five seconds later, every trace of color disappeared from his face.
"Boss..."
Ryker immediately recognized that tone.
"What happened?"
Marco lowered the phone.
"The notebook wasn't the only thing missing."
Ryker frowned.
"What else?"
"The security cameras."
"What about them?"
"They were wiped."
"Completely."
Victoria closed her eyes.
"They planned this."
One of her investigators nodded.
"The thieves knew exactly where Ethan hid the ledger."
"They ignored jewelry."
"Ignored cash."
"Ignored computers."
"They took only one thing."
Ryker looked toward the darkening Chicago skyline.
"So whoever has that notebook..."
"...knows everyone responsible for Ethan's death."
Victoria answered quietly.
"And probably helped plan it."
The convoy left O'Hare Airport under heavy security.
Three black SUVs.
Two security vehicles.
Eight armed protection officers.
Ryker insisted the twins ride in the middle vehicle.
"No chances."
Victoria agreed.
"If Amelia has partners..."
"They may try again."
Inside the SUV...
Lily leaned against the window.
"Mr. Steel?"
Ryker smiled through the rearview mirror.
"Yes?"
"Are bad people still following us?"
He didn't lie.
"They might."
She became quiet.
Then asked the question no five-year-old should ever have to ask.
"If they catch us..."
"Will they split me and Owen up?"
Ryker's grip tightened on the steering wheel.
"Never."
"I promise."
Owen looked up.
"You promise for real?"
Ryker met the boy's eyes.
"For real."
Half an hour later...
The convoy arrived at Ryker's Chicago penthouse overlooking Lake Michigan.
The building occupied the top twenty floors of Steel Tower.
Private elevators.
Biometric security.
Bulletproof glass.
A panic room hidden behind the library.
Former military personnel guarded every entrance.
Marco opened the elevator.
"Welcome home."
Lily looked confused.
"This isn't our home."
Ryker crouched beside her.
"No."
"But until we figure everything out..."
"It can be."
The twins stepped inside.
Neither child had ever seen anything like it.
Floor-to-ceiling windows.
A grand piano.
A living room larger than most houses.
Yet what caught Owen's attention wasn't the expensive artwork.
It was a golden retriever sleeping beside the fireplace.
The dog slowly opened one eye.
Then lazily walked over.
Without hesitation...
He rested his enormous head on Owen's lap.
The little boy laughed for the first time all day.
"Doggy!"
Ryker smiled.
"His name is Duke."
Duke immediately rolled onto his back.
Demanding belly rubs.
Victoria laughed softly.
"I haven't heard Owen laugh since Ethan got sick."
For a brief moment...
Everything felt peaceful.
Then Ryker's phone rang.
Marco answered first.
His expression hardened.
"We've got a problem."
Across town...
The police had searched Amelia's financial records.
What they found shocked everyone.
More than six hundred million dollars had vanished.
Not into luxury purchases.
Not into vacations.
Into payments.
Hundreds of them.
To judges.
Lawyers.
Corporate executives.
Politicians.
Hospital administrators.
Even one medical examiner.
Victoria stared at the report.
"Oh my God..."
"It wasn't one woman."
"It was an organization."
Ryker sat silently.
He had spent decades building one of the world's largest logistics companies.
He knew corruption when he saw it.
This wasn't greed.
This was infrastructure.
Someone had spent years building a network powerful enough to erase people.
Including Victoria.
Including Ethan.
Including two innocent children.
Meanwhile...
Amelia sat inside a federal detention center.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't frightened.
She was smiling.
Across from her sat a man in an expensive gray suit.
He never gave his name.
Only one sentence.
"The children are alive."
Amelia nodded.
"I know."
"The notebook is gone."
"I know."
"The boss isn't pleased."
Her smile faded.
"I kept my part."
The man leaned forward.
"No."
"You panicked."
"You left witnesses."
"You got arrested."
Amelia whispered,
"I can fix it."
The man stood.
"No."
"You've become a liability."
Then he left.
Without another word.
Amelia suddenly understood.
She wasn't going to be rescued.
She was going to be eliminated.
That same evening...
Ryker found Lily unable to sleep.
She sat on the balcony wrapped in one of his oversized blankets.
Looking toward the lights of Chicago.
"Can't sleep?"
She shook her head.
"Daddy used to tell us stories."
"What kind?"
"About stars."
"He said people we love become lights."
Ryker looked upward.
"My father said something similar."
Lily smiled sadly.
"Do you miss him?"
"Every day."
She studied him carefully.
"You still look for him too."
Ryker froze.
Children noticed impossible things.
He quietly nodded.
"I suppose I do."
Lily reached over.
Placed her tiny hand on his.
"Maybe..."
"Our daddies found each other."
Ryker couldn't answer.
His eyes suddenly burned.
At exactly 2:17 a.m.
Steel Tower lost power.
Every light disappeared.
Emergency generators failed.
Security monitors went black.
Marco grabbed his weapon.
"Boss!"
Ryker was already moving.
"Lock down the children!"
The emergency lights flickered red.
Then...
Glass shattered somewhere below.
One guard screamed.
Gunfire echoed through the lobby.
Victoria ran toward the children's bedroom.
"Stay behind me!"
The twins woke instantly.
Lily began crying.
Owen clutched his stuffed bear.
Ryker entered carrying a handgun.
Marco slammed the panic room door open.
"Inside!"
Everyone rushed through the hidden passage.
Heavy steel doors sealed behind them.
Three seconds later...
Explosions rocked the apartment.
Inside the panic room...
Silence.
Only Lily's frightened breathing filled the air.
Ryker checked every monitor.
Nothing.
Whoever attacked had disabled every camera.
Professional.
Military precision.
Marco cursed.
"They knew the building."
Victoria whispered,
"Someone inside helped them."
Minutes later...
Ryker's secure satellite phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
"You should have left the children at the airport."
Ryker remained calm.
"Who are you?"
"You already have something that doesn't belong to you."
"The twins."
Ryker smiled coldly.
"They aren't property."
"No..."
"They're leverage."
The caller chuckled.
"You've declared war without understanding your enemy."
Ryker answered quietly,
"I've beaten bigger enemies."
The voice became colder.
"You've never faced the Black Circle."
The line disconnected.
Marco looked confused.
"The Black Circle?"
Victoria's face turned completely white.
"No..."
Ryker turned toward her.
"You know that name?"
She nodded slowly.
"Ethan mentioned it once."
"He thought it was just a rumor."
"A secret organization."
"They infiltrate governments..."
"Corporations..."
"Banks..."
"They don't steal companies."
"They steal entire families."
Everyone fell silent.
Then one of Ryker's security experts burst into the panic room.
"Boss!"
"What?"
"We recovered one security camera."
Marco leaned forward.
"Did it capture the attackers?"
The technician nodded.
"It captured..."
"...their leader."
He turned the tablet around.
The image appeared.
Victoria gasped.
Ryker's eyes narrowed.
The man leading the assault wasn't a stranger.
It was someone both of them knew.
Someone Ethan Donovan had trusted more than anyone.
His former business partner.
Jonathan Cross.
The man everyone believed had attended Ethan's funeral...
May you like
...was actually the mastermind behind everything.
