Chapter 5 – The Father’s Final Gift

The gunshot echoed across the rooftop.

Glass rained onto the marble terrace as security agents rushed forward, surrounding Ryker Steel and the twins with bulletproof shields.

"Move! Move! Move!"

Marco fired twice toward the neighboring building before the assassin disappeared behind a rooftop access door.

Within seconds, helicopters circled above Steel Tower.

Police sirens screamed through downtown Chicago.

But the shooter was gone.

Ryker remained on one knee.

His arms were still wrapped around Lily.

She buried her face against his shoulder, trembling so hard that he could feel every frightened breath.

"It's over," he whispered.

"You’re safe."

She looked up with tear-filled eyes.

"Were they trying to hurt me?"

Ryker couldn't lie.

"Yes."

"Because of Daddy?"

"...Yes."

She became very quiet.

Then she whispered something that nearly broke him.

"I wish Daddy hadn't been rich."

No one in the security team spoke.

Because every adult standing there knew exactly what she meant.

Money had bought mansions.

Companies.

Private jets.

But it had also painted targets on two innocent children.

Hours later...

The penthouse had become a fortress.

Federal agents occupied every entrance.

Military-grade surveillance covered every floor.

No one entered without facial recognition and biometric verification.

Ryker hadn't slept.

Neither had Victoria.

Inside the conference room, Ethan Donovan's encrypted files continued downloading.

Seventy-three recordings.

Only twelve had been unlocked.

Agent Rebecca Lawson looked exhausted.

"Every video reveals another piece of the conspiracy."

Marco rubbed his temples.

"How many people are involved?"

Rebecca answered quietly.

"At least eighty-seven."

The room fell silent.

Suddenly...

A new video unlocked automatically.

Unlike the others...

This one had no title.

Only a timestamp.

Recorded three days before Ethan died.

Victoria pressed Play.

Ethan appeared on screen.

He looked weaker than before.

His face had grown pale.

But his eyes remained sharp.

"If you're seeing this..."

"I've run out of time."

He paused.

Then smiled sadly.

"Lily..."

"Owen..."

"If you're old enough to understand..."

"I need you to know something."

Victoria covered her mouth.

Ryker leaned forward.

"I never wanted you to inherit my money."

"I wanted you to inherit peace."

"But there are people who believe wealth is worth more than family."

"They're wrong."

He reached off-camera.

Holding up a small silver key.

"This key opens something no one knows exists."

Marco frowned.

"A safety deposit box?"

Ethan smiled.

"No."

"A room."

He continued.

"When your grandfather built Donovan Aerospace..."

"He secretly constructed a secure archive beneath the original headquarters."

"Every contract."

"Every transaction."

"Every illegal offer we refused."

"It's all there."

Victoria's eyes widened.

"The Legacy Vault..."

She whispered the words as though remembering a forgotten dream.

"I thought Father destroyed it."

Ethan shook his head in the video.

"If Jonathan Cross ever betrays us..."

"The evidence needed to destroy him is inside."

Ryker stood immediately.

"Where is it?"

Victoria answered without taking her eyes off the screen.

"Boston."

"The original Donovan headquarters."

Marco already had his phone out.

"I'll prepare the jet."

Meanwhile...

Hundreds of miles away...

Jonathan Cross watched the same video.

Not from the internet.

From inside Ethan's private cloud.

He slammed his fist onto the desk.

"So..."

"You remembered the vault."

One of his men stepped forward.

"What now?"

Jonathan smiled.

"We get there first."

The following morning...

Ryker's private Gulfstream landed in Boston before sunrise.

A convoy of armored vehicles carried everyone directly to Donovan Aerospace's abandoned headquarters.

The forty-story building had been empty for nearly five years.

Dust covered the marble lobby.

Old company logos still decorated the walls.

Victoria walked slowly through the entrance.

"I grew up here."

She whispered.

"My father taught Ethan and me to ride bicycles in this lobby on Sundays."

Owen tugged Ryker's sleeve.

"This place is spooky."

Ryker smiled.

"A little."

Lily pointed toward a faded family portrait hanging on the wall.

"That's Daddy."

For the first time...

The twins saw a picture of Ethan as a little boy.

Standing beside Victoria.

Both laughing.

Both covered in cake.

Victoria couldn't stop crying.

Using clues from Ethan's videos...

They descended three underground levels.

Old blueprints revealed a hidden corridor behind an abandoned archive room.

Marco pushed against the concrete wall.

Nothing happened.

Victoria remembered something.

"Dad loved puzzles."

She looked around.

Then noticed an old brass compass embedded into the floor.

She turned it toward true north.

A deep mechanical rumble echoed beneath them.

The wall slowly slid open.

Inside...

Rows of steel cabinets stretched into darkness.

Hard drives.

Paper records.

Original contracts.

Photographs.

Video tapes.

Everything carefully preserved.

Agent Lawson stared in disbelief.

"This could expose decades of corruption."

Ryker walked deeper into the vault.

At the very end...

Sat one small wooden box.

The silver key fit perfectly.

Inside...

There was no money.

No jewelry.

Only three envelopes.

One marked:

Victoria

One marked:

Lily & Owen

And one marked:

Ryker Steel

Ryker frowned.

"My name?"

Victoria looked equally shocked.

"Ethan prepared this years ago."

Ryker slowly opened his envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Ryker,

If you're reading this, then I guessed correctly.

I always believed that if anything happened to me, there was only one man powerful enough to protect my children without trying to own them.

You.

We never became business partners, but I respected you more than most men I ever met.

If Lily and Owen are with you...

Thank you.

Don't let them grow up believing they were abandoned.

Tell them their father loved them every single day of his life.

And if they ever ask who their real family is...

Tell them family is the people who stay.

— Ethan

Ryker lowered the letter.

For several moments...

He couldn't speak.

Then...

An explosion shook the entire underground vault.

Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.

Marco grabbed his weapon.

"They found us!"

Emergency alarms screamed through the building.

Agent Lawson shouted,

"Everyone move!"

Security cameras showed dozens of armed men surrounding the headquarters.

At the front...

Stepping calmly from a black SUV...

Was Jonathan Cross.

He looked directly into the nearest camera.

Smiled.

Then spoke into a loudspeaker.

"Ryker."

"I know you're down there."

"Bring me the children..."

"...and I'll let everyone else live."

The lights flickered.

The vault doors began sealing automatically.

Victoria looked at Ryker.

"This is it."

Ryker slowly stood.

His eyes had become cold.

Determined.

Protective.

He looked down at Lily and Owen.

Then back toward the massive steel vault door.

Jonathan thought he had trapped them.

He had no idea...

May you like

He had just cornered the one man who never lost a war.
