Chapter 1: The Waitress Who Refused to Pick Up the Money (Part 2)

The entire garden fell into a heavy silence.

The floating dollar bills drifted across the shimmering blue water like tiny green boats.

No one moved.

No one laughed anymore.

Claire remained waist-deep in the pool, her soaked uniform clinging to her shoulders. Strands of dark hair stuck to her face, but she made no effort to wipe them away.

Instead, she looked directly at Addison Whitmore.

Her voice was calm.

Steady.

"I'd rather walk home with nothing..."

"...than teach my sister that dignity has a price."

The words landed harder than anyone expected.

Several guests quietly lowered their eyes.

An elderly woman near the fountain whispered to her husband,

"That poor girl has more class than everyone standing here."

The Man Everyone Feared

Before Addison could answer...

A slow clap echoed through the courtyard.

One.

Two.

Three.

Every head turned.

Vincent Moretti walked toward the pool.

His polished black shoes clicked against the marble.

No one dared speak.

Grant Whitmore's smile disappeared.

He hurried forward.

"Vincent..."

"I can explain."

Vincent never looked at him.

Instead, he stopped beside the water and looked down at Claire.

"Can you swim?"

Claire nodded, confused.

"Yes."

"Good."

He extended his hand.

"Then allow me to help you out."

For a moment, Claire hesitated.

She had no idea who this man was.

Only that everyone else suddenly looked terrified.

She accepted his hand.

His grip was firm but gentle.

He helped her onto the marble deck without a single glance at the floating money.

A Jacket Worth More Than a Car

Claire shivered in the cool evening air.

Without saying a word, Vincent removed his custom-tailored black suit jacket.

It was worth more than Claire earned in several months.

He carefully draped it across her shoulders.

"You'll catch cold."

Claire blinked.

"You don't have to—"

"I know."

His voice remained quiet.

"I want to."

The surrounding guests stared in disbelief.

Vincent Moretti was known throughout the East Coast for being impossible to read.

Some CEOs had negotiated with him for years without ever receiving a compliment.

Yet tonight...

He had given his jacket to a waitress.

Addison Loses Her Temper

Addison forced herself to smile.

"Mr. Moretti."

"I'm afraid you've misunderstood."

Vincent finally looked at her.

For several long seconds.

He said nothing.

The silence made Addison more uncomfortable than shouting ever could.

Finally...

"What exactly have I misunderstood?"

She laughed lightly.

"It was only a joke."

Brooke quickly nodded.

"Everyone knows Claire can swim."

"We were just having fun."

Vincent looked toward the pool.

"Really?"

He pointed at the floating bills.

"So this..."

"...is also fun?"

Neither sister answered.

Hannah Speaks Up

Before anyone else could interrupt...

Hannah Sloan stepped forward.

"I saw everything."

The crowd turned.

Addison's confidence immediately faded.

"Hannah..."

"I wouldn't."

Hannah ignored her.

She faced Vincent.

"Claire never touched Addison."

"The champagne spill was staged."

Brooke snapped,

"That's ridiculous."

Hannah shook her head.

"I watched you bump the other server."

"And I watched Addison blame Claire."

More whispers spread through the guests.

Several people who had remained silent finally nodded.

"I saw it too."

"So did I."

"I didn't want to say anything."

The room began turning against the Whitmore sisters.

Claire's Greatest Fear

While everyone argued...

Claire quietly stepped away.

She wasn't thinking about humiliation anymore.

She wasn't thinking about the money.

She was thinking about something far more frightening.

Her phone.

She reached into the hidden pocket beneath her apron.

Empty.

Her face went white.

"No..."

She looked toward the pool.

The phone had fallen into the water.

Everything inside it—

Photos of her late mother.

Medical appointments.

Emily's therapy schedule.

Banking information.

Her only connection to years of memories.

She slowly sat on the edge of the pool.

For the first time that night...

She cried.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just silent tears.

Vincent Notices

Vincent crouched beside her.

"Are you hurt?"

Claire shook her head.

"My phone."

He frowned.

"What about it?"

"It was all I had."

"My mother's voice."

"What?"

"I never deleted her voicemail."

Silence.

"My sister listens to it every birthday."

Vincent looked into the water.

Without hesitation...

He removed his watch.

Placed it on the marble.

Rolled up his sleeves.

Then...

To the complete astonishment of every guest...

Vincent Moretti stepped into the swimming pool himself.

"What is he doing?"

Grant whispered.

Marcus, Vincent's longtime bodyguard, smiled faintly.

"The boss doesn't like unfinished business."

The Search

Vincent searched the bottom of the pool.

Within seconds he found Claire's phone resting near one of the underwater lights.

He climbed out and handed it to her.

"I'm sorry."

Claire looked devastated.

"It won't work."

Vincent studied the damaged phone.

"Probably not."

He reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a simple black business card.

"There."

Claire frowned.

"I don't understand."

"Tomorrow morning."

"Bring that phone to this address."

"My technician specializes in data recovery."

She looked at him in disbelief.

"Why would you help me?"

Vincent answered honestly.

"Because nobody helped my mother."

The Truth Begins to Surface

Just then...

One of the younger catering servers came running across the lawn.

"Marlene!"

The manager turned.

"What is it?"

"The security office."

"They found something."

Grant frowned.

"What?"

The young man swallowed.

"The surveillance footage."

Everyone froze.

"The cameras recorded everything."

Addison's face drained of color.

Brooke whispered,

"No..."

Caught on Camera

Marcus returned carrying a tablet.

He pressed play.

The large outdoor television beside the orchestra automatically connected to the security feed.

Two hundred guests watched in silence.

There was Addison...

Pretending to drop her diamond ring.

There was Brooke...

Deliberately crashing into another server.

There were both sisters...

Grabbing Claire.

Shoving her into the pool.

Then...

Addison throwing money into the water while smiling.

The footage ended.

Nobody spoke.

Grant Whitmore slowly closed his eyes.

Twenty years of carefully protecting the Whitmore family reputation...

Destroyed in less than three minutes of video.

The Billion-Dollar Decision

Grant hurried toward Vincent.

"Please."

"We can settle this privately."

Vincent calmly looked at him.

"Privately?"

He glanced toward Claire.

"Was her humiliation private?"

Grant had no answer.

Vincent buttoned his jacket again.

"I was considering refinancing your company's debt."

"I spent eight months reviewing your proposal."

Hope briefly returned to Grant's face.

Then Vincent continued.

"I've changed my mind."

The hope disappeared.

"My companies will never do business with people who mistake cruelty for privilege."

Grant staggered backward.

The refinancing deal was worth over three hundred million dollars.

Without it...

Whitmore Holdings would likely collapse.

A Quiet Goodbye

Claire removed Vincent's jacket.

"You'll need this."

He gently pushed it back toward her.

"No."

"But—"

"Keep it."

"You'll return it when your phone works again."

For the first time all evening...

Claire smiled.

A small smile.

But a real one.

"Thank you."

Vincent smiled back.

"It wasn't the money in the pool that interested me."

"What was?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"You refused to pick it up."

Cliffhanger

Just as police cars entered the estate...

Claire's soaked phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked down.

The screen should have been dead.

Instead...

It lit up.

One unread message appeared.

It had been received exactly ten years earlier.

The sender's name simply read:

MOM

Claire's hands began to shake.

She slowly opened the message.

Inside were only seven words.

If anything happens, trust Vincent Moretti.

Claire stared at Vincent in disbelief.

He looked equally shocked.

Because he had never met Claire's mother.

May you like

Or so he had always believed.
