Chapter 3: The Secret Beneath Blackwood Lighthouse (Part 1)

The ocean was restless.

Long after midnight, waves crashed against the rocky cliffs below Whitmore Estate, but no one inside the mansion noticed.

Every person in the library had only one thought.

Someone had broken in for Evelyn Hart's missing envelope.

Someone had known exactly where to find it.

And someone was still one step ahead.

Vincent slowly folded Brooke's handwritten note before placing it into an evidence bag.

"No fingerprints?"

Marcus shook his head.

"Gloves."

"Professional."

Claire stared at the silver compass symbol drawn beneath the message.

"My mother wore this."

Vincent nodded.

"And now whoever stole the envelope is using it."

"That isn't coincidence."

Brooke Is Missing

Police searched every room in the mansion.

Every guest suite.

Every staff hallway.

Every security office.

Nothing.

Brooke Whitmore had vanished.

Grant sat heavily in the library chair.

"I don't understand."

"My daughter couldn't do something like this."

Marcus didn't respond immediately.

Instead, he placed three photographs on the table.

"They were taken over the last six months."

Grant frowned.

"What are these?"

"Surveillance."

The first photograph showed Brooke entering a small office building in Manhattan.

The second showed her meeting a man whose face remained hidden beneath a baseball cap.

The third...

Made Grant stop breathing.

Brooke was handing over a thick brown envelope.

On its corner was the same silver compass.

Addison Finally Breaks

Addison had remained unusually quiet since the security footage exposed her earlier that evening.

Now...

She began trembling.

Claire noticed first.

"She's scared."

Vincent slowly turned toward Addison.

"What aren't you telling us?"

"I don't know anything."

Marcus calmly slid the photographs across the table.

"Look carefully."

Addison's face drained of color.

"Oh God..."

Grant looked at her.

"You knew."

Tears filled Addison's eyes.

"I thought she was protecting us."

"Who?"

"Brooke."

The Family Secret

For years...

The Whitmore sisters had been inseparable.

At least, that's what everyone believed.

The truth was different.

Addison slowly lowered her head.

"When we were children..."

"...Brooke used to disappear."

Grant frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"She'd leave for days."

"You always said she was visiting Aunt Victoria."

Grant froze.

Claire noticed immediately.

"You lied."

Grant looked away.

"There was no Aunt Victoria."

Silence.

"My sister disappeared twenty years ago."

"None of us ever found her."

Vincent narrowed his eyes.

"So where was Brooke going?"

Addison whispered,

"To meet her."

The Woman in the Gray Coat

Claire's heartbeat quickened.

"The woman from the old surveillance footage?"

Addison nodded.

"The one who looked like me."

Marcus quietly asked,

"Victoria Whitmore?"

Addison looked confused.

"No."

"She never told us her name."

"She always wore gray."

"And she always carried..."

Claire finished the sentence.

"A silver compass."

A Memory Returns

Claire suddenly remembered something.

She closed her eyes.

A childhood memory.

She couldn't have been more than seven years old.

Her mother had been sewing a torn school uniform.

Rain beat against the apartment windows.

Someone knocked on the door.

Claire had peeked through the hallway.

A woman stood outside.

Gray coat.

Long blonde hair.

Silver compass necklace.

Her mother hugged the woman tightly.

Then whispered something Claire had never forgotten.

"You should never have come back."

The woman answered quietly.

"I promised Margaret."

Claire opened her eyes.

"Margaret."

Vincent looked at her.

"My mother knew someone named Margaret."

Grant's face turned white.

"My mother."

Margaret Whitmore

No one spoke for several seconds.

Grant finally whispered,

"My mother's name was Margaret Whitmore."

Claire looked stunned.

"So Evelyn knew your mother?"

Grant slowly nodded.

"They were best friends."

Vincent frowned.

"That doesn't make sense."

"We've searched Whitmore family records for decades."

"There was never any Evelyn Hart."

Grant laughed bitterly.

"Because my father erased her."

The Hidden Diary

Eleanor, the Whitmore family attorney, suddenly remembered something.

"There may be one place he couldn't erase."

She hurried toward the oldest bookshelf in the library.

Carefully removed several leather-bound law books.

Pressed against the wooden panel behind them.

Click.

A hidden drawer slowly slid open.

Inside rested a faded blue diary.

Margaret Whitmore's personal journal.

Grant whispered,

"I've never seen that."

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"Your mother hid it from your father."

Claire gently opened the first page.

Written in beautiful handwriting were five heartbreaking words.

The truth deserves one witness.

Margaret's Journal

The first entries described ordinary family life.

Children.

Gardens.

Dinner parties.

Then everything changed.

Claire turned another page.

The ink became shaky.

Edward says Evelyn asks too many questions.

Another page.

Richard wants to marry her.

Another.

Edward says she'll destroy everything we've built.

Claire's hands trembled.

Vincent quietly read over her shoulder.

Then...

One sentence stopped them both.

If anything happens to Evelyn, Edward already knows where she hides the child.

Silence filled the room.

Claire whispered,

"The child..."

Grant looked toward her.

"You."

The Safe Deposit Key

Something small slipped from between the diary pages.

Clink.

A tiny brass key.

Marcus picked it up.

"There are numbers engraved."

Box 317

Blackwood Savings Bank

Claire immediately remembered the address inside her mother's compass locket.

Blackwood Lighthouse.

Blackwood Bank.

The same town.

Vincent smiled faintly.

"I think your mother expected us to go there."

Someone Is Watching

Nearly two hundred miles away...

Inside a parked black SUV overlooking Whitmore Estate...

A man lowered his binoculars.

He picked up a satellite phone.

"They found Margaret's diary."

A distorted voice answered.

"I expected they would."

"What about the girl?"

The man looked through the windshield.

Claire was visible through the library windows.

"She's smarter than Evelyn."

The voice became cold.

"Then don't make the same mistake Edward made."

"No witnesses this time."

The line went dead.

The man quietly loaded a suppressed pistol.

Then started the engine.

Departure Before Dawn

At five o'clock the next morning...

Vincent stood beside his private helicopter.

Marcus checked security.

Luca loaded supplies.

Claire carried only a small backpack.

Inside were:

  • Her mother's compass locket.

  • Margaret's diary.

  • The brass key.

  • Her repaired phone.

  • A faded photograph of Evelyn.

Grant walked toward her.

"I don't know if you'll ever forgive my family."

Claire answered honestly.

"I don't know either."

"But if my mother died because of your father's secrets..."

"...I intend to learn every one of them."

Vincent opened the helicopter door.

"Ready?"

Claire looked once toward the mansion.

Toward the place where her ordinary life had ended forever.

Then she climbed aboard.

The helicopter lifted into the morning sky.

Neither of them noticed...

A black SUV leaving the estate only seconds later.

May you like

Following them north.
