Chapter 3: The Secret Beneath Blackwood Lighthouse (Part 2)

The helicopter sliced through the pale morning sky as the Atlantic shimmered beneath them.

Claire sat beside the window, her mother's silver compass locket resting tightly in her hand. The farther Whitmore Estate disappeared behind them, the more she realized there was no returning to the life she had known.

Twenty-four hours ago she had been an invisible waitress struggling to pay rent.

Now...

She was chasing a secret that powerful people had buried for more than two decades.

Vincent noticed her staring silently at the ocean.

"Second thoughts?"

Claire smiled weakly.

"I'm trying to remember what normal felt like."

"I think I forgot sometime around yesterday afternoon."

Vincent chuckled softly.

"I forgot years ago."

For the first time since they met, the silence between them felt comfortable rather than awkward.

The Black SUV

Nearly five thousand feet below...

A black SUV raced north along Interstate 95.

Its driver wore dark sunglasses despite the cloudy morning.

He never looked away from the helicopter overhead.

A Bluetooth earpiece crackled.

"They're thirty-seven minutes from Blackwood."

The distorted voice replied,

"Don't stop them."

The driver frowned.

"What?"

"They'll open the box for us."

Then...

"Take it afterward."

The call ended.

The man smiled coldly.

"So be it."

Blackwood

Blackwood, Maine, was nothing like Newport.

No marble estates.

No luxury hotels.

No private clubs.

The small coastal town had weathered wooden storefronts, fishing boats tied to old docks, and cafés where everyone still greeted each other by name.

Claire immediately felt something strange.

"This place..."

Vincent looked at her.

"What?"

"It feels familiar."

"You've been here?"

She slowly shook her head.

"No."

"But my mother used to paint pictures of this lighthouse."

The helicopter landed near the harbor.

Marcus had already arranged discreet transportation.

Within minutes they stood before Blackwood Savings Bank, a century-old brick building that looked untouched by time.

The elderly bank manager greeted them politely.

"I'm Harold Bennett."

"You called earlier."

Vincent nodded.

"We're here about Safe Deposit Box 317."

Harold adjusted his glasses.

"I'll need the key."

Claire handed him the tiny brass key found inside Margaret's diary.

The old man's expression immediately changed.

"I never thought I'd see this again."

"You recognize it?"

Harold nodded slowly.

"I've been waiting twenty-one years."

The Promise

He led them into the underground vault.

Massive steel doors swung open.

Rows of deposit boxes stretched along concrete walls.

Harold stopped before Box 317.

He inserted the bank's master key.

Claire inserted hers.

The lock clicked.

Harold quietly stepped back.

"Mrs. Hart asked me to make one promise."

Claire looked at him.

"What promise?"

"If anyone other than her daughter tried to open this box..."

"...I was to call the police."

"And if her daughter came?"

Harold smiled sadly.

"I was to tell her..."

"'Your mother never stopped believing.'"

Claire felt tears sting her eyes.

Inside the Box

The metal drawer slid open.

It wasn't filled with jewelry.

Or cash.

Instead...

There were photographs.

Cassette tapes.

Medical files.

A leather journal.

And one VHS videotape labeled simply:

For Claire

Claire carefully lifted the tape.

"My mother made this?"

Harold nodded.

"She came here one week before she disappeared."

"She cried the entire time."

The Recording

An old television and VHS player still sat in a storage room upstairs.

Harold dusted them off.

Minutes later...

The tape began to play.

Static filled the screen.

Then...

A young Evelyn Hart appeared.

Claire immediately covered her mouth.

It was the first moving image she had ever seen of her mother.

Evelyn smiled warmly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then I couldn't protect you forever."

Claire burst into tears.

Vincent quietly sat beside her without saying a word.

Evelyn continued.

"My beautiful Claire..."

"I hope you grew into the kind woman I always believed you would become."

"If Vincent Moretti is with you..."

"...then destiny kept its promise."

Vincent stared at the screen.

"She remembered..."

Edward's Crime

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

"There is something you must know."

She held up several documents.

"Edward Whitmore did not build his fortune legally."

"He stole patents."

"He bribed judges."

"He ruined innocent families."

Claire and Vincent exchanged glances.

Much of this matched Margaret's diary.

Then Evelyn said something unexpected.

"But none of that is his greatest crime."

Silence.

"He murdered Richard Whitmore."

The room froze.

Grant's older brother.

The man everyone believed had disappeared.

Claire whispered,

"Oh my God..."

The Final Evidence

Evelyn reached toward the camera.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...the proof is still hidden."

She unfolded an old map.

A red circle marked only one location.

Blackwood Lighthouse

Beneath the foundation.

"There is a steel box."

"Richard buried it before Edward found him."

"Everything is inside."

The recording suddenly became distorted.

Voices echoed off camera.

Someone shouted.

"Evelyn!"

She looked toward the door in panic.

"They're here."

She turned back to the camera.

"Claire..."

"I have loved you every single second of your life."

The screen went black.

Claire couldn't breathe.

The Race to the Lighthouse

Within minutes, everyone was driving toward the lighthouse.

Dark clouds gathered over the Atlantic.

Rain began falling.

Marcus parked near the cliff.

"There."

The old lighthouse stood exactly as it appeared on the map.

Waves crashed violently below.

The heavy wooden door hung partially open.

Someone had already been there.

Vincent quietly drew the licensed security handgun he carried.

Marcus signaled two guards.

"Stay alert."

Beneath the Foundation

The lighthouse was abandoned.

Dust covered everything.

Claire unfolded the map.

"The basement."

A narrow staircase led beneath the tower.

Using flashlights, they descended into damp stone tunnels.

Finally...

They reached a cracked concrete floor.

Marcus tapped it with a crowbar.

"Hollow."

The guards broke through the concrete.

A rusted steel chest appeared.

Claire smiled through tears.

"Mom..."

"You were right."

Vincent lifted the heavy lid.

Inside...

Dozens of folders.

Hard drives.

Original contracts.

Photographs.

And one sealed envelope.

Addressed to...

Vincent Moretti.

The Ambush

The moment Vincent picked up the envelope—

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the lighthouse.

Concrete exploded beside Marcus.

"DOWN!"

Everyone hit the ground.

More shots rang out.

Glass shattered above them.

The attacker had followed them.

Marcus fired back.

"Get Claire out!"

Vincent grabbed Claire's hand.

They ran toward the stairwell.

Another bullet struck the wall inches from Claire's head.

Suddenly—

A masked man appeared at the top of the stairs.

He pointed a pistol directly at Claire.

"Give me the envelope."

Vincent stepped in front of her.

"No."

The man smiled.

"You'd die for someone you met yesterday?"

Vincent never hesitated.

"Yes."

The gunman slowly cocked the weapon.

Then said something that made everyone's blood run cold.

"You really are Richard Whitmore's son."

Claire's eyes widened.

"What?"

Vincent froze.

The masked man laughed.

May you like

"You still don't know who your real father is."
